Rob Rochholz

Rob Rochholz is a Fresno State (TheOtherFSU) alum and San Francisco Giants fan who works in graphic design and lives in San Francisco. He's a former sportswriter at The Fresno Bee, where he covered the WAC, Pac-10 and Big West conferences. A fan of snowboarding and reality TV, Rob correctly predicted in his August 2004 Outsports.com College Football Preview that USC would defeat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl some five months later.

Richie Weldon

Richie Weldon has been following college football since 1995, his freshman year at Virginia Tech.  An avid Hokies fan, Richie tries not to let that influence his opinions on other teams (most of the time). Seattle is the place he calls home now, and almost every Saturday during the fall he gets together with other Hokies to watch the games.  Richie is a software developer.

1.  Florida  13-1 (Last week: 2)

This is what’s wrong with college football.  Sure the Gators soundly defeated an Ohio State team that failed to show up.  But there’s no way I’m convinced that Florida could beat Boise State.  This season – more than any other – proved that college football needs a playoff.  The national championship game was a resounding dud.

2.  Boise State  13-0  (Last week: 4)

If not for the Broncos, the entire bowl season would have been a major disappointment.  But it was Boise State that people will remember for years… not Florida.  Jared Zabransky, Ian Johnson and company provided a game for the ages, and Chris Peterson made some of the boldest play calls in football history.  Boise State not only defeated Big 12 champion Oklahoma, but it won the respect of the nation in the process.

3.  USC  11-2  (Last week: 5)

As predicted, the Trojans dispatched of an overrated Michigan team in the Rose Bowl.  If not for the UCLA loss, we’d likely be looking at another USC national championship because it’s apparent that the Trojans were probably better than Ohio State.

4.  Ohio State  12-1 (Last week: 1)

Florida didn’t win the national title so much as Ohio State lost it.  The Buckeyes were woeful following the opening kickoff return for a touchdown in the humiliating blowout loss.  After both Ohio State and Michigan lost badly in bowl games, we now know what some of us suspected all along – the Big Ten was overrated.  The league went an embarrassing 2-5 in bowl games.

5.  LSU  11-2  (Last week: 6)

The Tigers handed Brady Quinn and Notre Dame a lopsided loss in the Sugar Bowl in a game that was interesting for a half.  LSU was definitely one of the five best teams in the country at season’s end.

6.  Louisville  12-1  (Last week: 7)

Wake Forest was no match for the Cardinals, who turned out to be the Big East’s best team this year.

7.  Wisconsin  12-1  (Last week: 8)

The Badgers were playing better than any other Big Ten team at the end of the season.  They were probably the nation’s most overlooked team all year long.

8.  Michigan  11-2  (Last week: 3)

Losing their final two games of the season again has to be disappointing for a team that was so close to playing for the national title.  The Wolverines sputtered big-time in the Rose Bowl.

9.  Auburn 11-2  (Last week: NR)

The Tigers hold the distinction of being the only team to defeat Florida this season.  If Auburn hadn’t laid a couple of major eggs at home this year, things could have ended differently.

10.  California  10-3  (Last week: NR)

The Pac-10 co-champions turned in one of the best all-around performances during bowl season with a 45-10 thrashing of Texas A&M.

11.  BYU  11-2  (Last week:  NR)

The Cougars will enter the 2007 season on a 10-game winning streak.  BYU’s 38-8 pounding of Oregon was a surprise because of the margin and the fact the Cougars hadn’t won a bowl since 1996.

12.  Rutgers  11-2  (Last week: 12)

Even though hardly anyone saw the Texas Bowl, Rutgers did manage to win its first bowl game in school history.  It was a nice season for Greg Schiano and the Scarlet Knights, and 11 wins is a huge accomplishment when you play for one of the worst programs in college football history.  Rutgers has now been to three bowl games in the last 137 years!

Dropped out:  Notre Dame (9), Oklahoma (10), Wake Forest (11).

Just missed:  Hawaii, Oregon State, Boston College.

1. Florida

In what turned out to be a very strange college football season, the Florida Gators did what no other team this year could: unseat the preseason top ranked team. Are the Gators the best team in college football this season?  Who knows; without a playoff system all we can say is that Florida can hold onto the top spot until August.

2. LSU

LSU takes the second place spot after handily embarrassing Notre Dame 41-14, which was the same score that Florida beat Ohio State.  Very interesting coincidence for the SEC teams!  The Tigers should be able to use this win and ranking to vault themselves into the Top 5 for next season.

3. Ohio State

One bad loss at the end of the season drops the Buckeyes out of the top two  spots.  Sorry, Buckeyes.  With only one offensive touchdown in the game by the Heisman Trophy winner is not good enough for an elite team.

4. Boise State

It’s been said before and it’ll be said again, it’s a shame that Boise State doesn’t play in a better conference.  If the Broncos did, they should have been in the BCS championship game being the only team without a loss.  The Broncos should be well stacked for next season, and maybe ranked in the Top 15 during the preseason polls.

5. Louisville

If only that loss to Rutgers didn’t happen.  Louisville is taking over as the top team in the Big East.  Look for good things next season from new head coach Steve Kragthorpe.

5. USC

The Trojans, even though losing two games this season, are shaping up to be the Florida State teams of the 1990s by maintaining Top 5 rankings year after year.  Pete Carroll is locking up his spot as top-coach for the decade.

7. Wisconsin

It’s hard to place the Badgers this low in the rankings since they played incredible football this season.  It’s just that one loss to Michigan and not having Ohio State on the schedule which hurt the Badgers this season.  Look for good things to come from Madison in 2007.

8. Auburn

What a boring second half against Nebraska!  Only a field goal? Well, it got the job done and a Top 8 finish for the Tigers and sometimes, that’s all that matters.

9. Michigan

No one can deny that Big Blue had a good season, but to say it was a great season would be tough: losing two games to end the season will hang heavy on the Wolverines through the spring and summer.

10. Rutgers

Greg Schiano wins coach of the year award as the Scarlet Knights win their first ever bowl game.  What a great season for the boys from Piscataway, one that not even the biggest Rutgers fan could even imagine possible.

11. BYU

Just like Boise State,  BYU playing in a non-BCS conference hurt the Cougars this season.  Ten wins in a row to end the season is a perfect ending for any team.

12. West Virginia

The West Virginia AD needs to upgrade the out of conference schedule.  Playing only two ranked teams during the season (and losing to one of them) is what keeps the Mountaineers out of the Top 10.  That said, WVU played good football this season and managed to pull off a few close wins to end the season.

Just missed:

California, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas
