Big East Takes Center Stage

Week 10 – Nov. 4

By Richie Weldon

Each week this article will focus on some of my predictions and insights for the coming week and discuss some of my previous, faulty predictions. The article will also feature pictures of a different college football stud that defines the term “Eye Candy.”

Angles

"U" The Remedy

Miami is having a tough season, but is the problem with the team or the fans? In a game that usually comes down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter, only 41,000 people (including me) filled the Orange Bowl for last week's game against Virginia Tech.  A good 10% of those fans were donning Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange.  The rest were Miami “fans”, though it’s hard to call them that.

On Sunday, the Miami Herald indicated that quarterback Kyle Wright's dad needed to be escorted from the stands after fans started bad mouthing his son. There were signs hanging in the stadium indicating that head coach Larry Coker needs to be fired. The “boo birds” were even crowing their song when things were going badly during plays.  The list goes on.

On its website, the Miami Herald allows for fans to post responses to articles and also feelings about the team, coaches, administration, etc.  One such post on Sunday sums up the problems with the Miami program:

Dear South Florida: How can I say this? Well, you suck. Not all of you, but most of you. I know it, you know it, and the entire country knows it. 41,000 in attendance for VT at UM? That's a freakin' disgrace. You are the worst sports fans in the country and everyone knows it, especially you. Come on, you know you suck, don't deny it. You wrote the book on being a fair-weather fan and I'm sick of it. Did it ever occur to you losers that maybe, just maybe, going to a 'Canes game, despite the tough season, is just fun? Did it ever occur to you to buck up and support the team? You people in S.FL (about 80%) are just really awful, wretched people. The commentators are right when they call Miami the worst sports town in America. No matter what kind of season VT or UVA is having, they will consistently get well over 50,000 fans per game. They enjoy a fun game and are faithful to their team, even in the down years. I'm a 'Canes fan and support them 100%, even when they're down! So this is what I propose. Since 80% of S. Floridians are truly wretched "fans" probably because they're wretched people, these people should simply be required to leave, preferably relocate to Antarctica. We'll replace S.FL. with Virginians and then you'll see the area truly bloom. This is so because, unlike you losers, most Virginians are genuine and have fidelity. Then again, here's proposal #2 - support your team and show up to the freakin' games! We're all disappointed, but don't give up! GO 'CANES!!

If Miami wants to regain its status as an elite program and one that instills fear upon the competition each and every week, the fans need to stop being fair-weather and support the team no matter what happens.  With actual support from loyal fans, the team will get better.

Big East, Less Mess

We knew it would happen, there was no way around it; either Louisville or West Virginia had to lose. Doing so cleared up some of the mess as the conference is down to only two undefeated teams, Rutgers and Louisville. And guess what ... those two teams play in Piscataway on Thursday night.

Louisville is going to enter that game with the swagger they stole from the Hurricanes back on Sept. 14. Last week, the Cardinals knocked off the No. 3 team in the nation in style in front of a national audience. The only problem with having that kind of swagger is that it needs to be backed up and I'm not so sure Louisville will be able to.

College football is a game full of emotion and desire. Each season there are a few games played that catch the football world off guard. This game between Big East unbeatens will be one of games. Louisville is going to hear from the media all week long how good of a team they are, what a great win that was against West Virginia, and how easily they will beat Rutgers. The Cardinals are going to expect to win the game. The Scarlet Knights on the other hand are going to want the victory and want to prove they are a great team this year. It is the desire of the Scarlet Knights to win the game that will make it happen. Call it a gut feeling, but Louisville is going to have a long flight back to Kentucky.

Random Predictions

In the Pac-10, No. 21 Oregon travels down to Los Angeles to take on the #7 Trojans from USC.  This is an important game for the Ducks as they look to assert themselves as the second best team in the league.  Having lost to Cal by three TDs, the Ducks hope to win their last three games and play in the Holiday Bowl.  The Trojans are basically fighting for the same bowl game and would love to drown the Ducks’ hope.  The last time Oregon played a Top 25 team, the Ducks lost by 21 points.  Look for a similar loss against the Trojans.

Cincinnati is hoping to catch West Virginia in a downfall.  The Mountaineers are peeved at their loss to the Cardinals and will knock Cincy into next Tuesday with a huge victory.

A 6-4 Alabama travels to take on the No. 12 ranked 7-2 LSU team.  As much as I’d like to see Alabama win this race to screw things up in the SEC West, it just won’t happen.

The Broncos from Boise State should continue their dominance this season when they take on the 6-2 Spartans from San Jose State.  This game, in all likelihood shouldn’t even be close.

In an evening game of note, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons travel down to Tallahassee for what should be an interesting matchup against Florida State.  Wake has not beaten FSU in the past 14 attempts.  If there is a season for this streak to end, it would be this one.  FSU has lost a number of close games this season, with the four losses all coming between four and seven points.  The only team FSU has beaten with a winning record is Miami, and we all know how Miami’s season is going.  Look for the Demon Deacons to pull an “upset” at Doak Campbell.

Dangles

Last week, I predicted the following games:

  • Louisville beats West Virginia
  • Pittsburgh beats South Florida, by less than a TD
  • Virginia Tech beats Miami, by 10 points
  • Tennessee beats LSU, easily
  • Texas A&M beats Oklahoma, big time
  • California beats UCLA

My 3-3 record last week was horrible!  The big game between Louisville and West Virginia was called correctly as were the losses by Miami and UCLA.  But holy cow!  And what was with Pitt’s QB, Tyler Palko, throwing three INTs to mess up my prediction. I wasn’t able to catch any of the Texas A&M / Oklahoma game, but my prediction of a big Aggies win, well, came up dry like Norman during the Dust Bowls of 1931-39.

Perks

Out in Hawaii, Colt Brennan has been racking up some impressive stats as he's lead the Warriors to a 7-2 (WAC 5-1) record. On his way to 39 touchdown passes this season, he’s thrown for over 3340 yards while completing almost 73% of the pass attempts.  Hawaii’s No. 15 has also racked up two touchdowns and 206 yards rushing.  I've yet to see him play, but all the web pictures and ESPN highlights, I’m looking forward to the next late night game when he’s on TV.  (Hawaii has a game every Saturday night at 11:05 p.m. ET between now and Dec. 2.)
