Angles, Dangles and Perks
Irish More Hype Than Bite

Week 3 – Sept. 1

By Richie Weldon

Each week this article will focus on some of my predictions and insights for the coming week and discuss some of my previous, faulty predictions. The article will also feature pictures of a different college football stud that defines the term “Eye Candy”.

Angles

I got to admit, this week’s recap article is going to be hard to write as I wasn’t in front of the TV watching games as much as I’d like due to a small matter of a wedding for a good college buddy of mine. I did manage to catch a few games at the ESPN Zone in Disney World, but the only audio feed was from the Iowa State at Iowa game.

So what happened this week?  We found out further proof that Al Groh at Virginia needs to be fired.  ASAP.   It appears that the Fighting Irish are more hype than bite this season.  Rutgers is now three games from making a second bowl game in a row.  And the Pac-10 officials are a bunch of clowns.

It’s only a few more weeks until the first round of the BCS standings comes out.  You all know what to expect: One of the unbeaten teams is going to be ranked lower than a one-loss Texas or LSU team and all that controversy is going to start anew.  Which unbeaten team is going to cause the most noise?  My money would be on West Virginia. The Mountaineers are high in the human polls but I really do not think the computers are going to like them much at all.  Looking at the rest of West Virginia’s schedule, only Louisville is currently ranked.  The other teams remaining on West Virginia’s schedule might be playing well, but without playing a few ranked teams, the computers are just not going to like WVU enough to push them ahead of the one-loss teams.

This week there are a few interesting games being played.  In what could be the penultimate game leading up to Al Groh’s firing, Virginia travels down to Atlanta to take on a stinging Georgia Tech team on Thursday night.  Look for Reggie Ball to have a great night under the lights against a rather weak UVA defense that’s given up two more touchdowns (five) than its offense has scored (three) in the first three games of the season.  Colorado is going to start the season 0-4 after a beating between the hedges in Athens.  Rutgers should easily move up to 4-0 after taking care of business against I-AA hapless Howard (0-2).  Aren’t these just all great match-ups so far?

Saturday afternoon, some good games come on the air.  Iowa State goes down to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns and Penn State travels to the Horseshoe to take on Ohio State.  Those should be good, fun games to watch, but I think the more intriguing game is going to be Arizona State at California.  The outcome of this game will likely decide and lock-in the #2 team in the Pac-10.  Both teams are evenly matched in offense output and defensive abilities.  Cal did get spanked by Tennessee in Week 1, but that game seems to be “first game jitters” as the other two games the team seems to have gelled.  Look for a pretty close game, but Cal, playing at home, will barely edge out Arizona State, perhaps by three or four points.

Dangles

Last week my picks were only good for a 1-2 showing.  Somehow Washington was able to pull off what I’d call a pretty good upset in beating Fresno State 21-20.  Only if I wasn’t on the road and was in Seattle to see that game!  Dang!  Illinois also allowed Syracuse to not go winless for an entire year, getting beat 31-21 by the Orange.  The one pick I got right was Wake Forest beating Connecticut, but I thought it would be a high scoring game and not 24-13.

In my preseason Top 25 I had Nebraska going on the road to beat USC.  One of these days I will learn to never bet against Pete Carroll.  That man knows his football and almost always has his team ready to play and rarin’ to win.  I’m getting concerned about having picked Iowa to meet Auburn in for the national title game.  The Hawkeyes are not beating teams as solidly as they should.  Auburn still seems to be a good bet, especially after that great game and a 7-3 victory against LSU on Saturday.

Perks

Tyler Palko, Pittsburgh’s veteran QB, was looking too good during the Panthers losing effort against Michigan State not to make this week’s Perks. Usually guys with longer hair don’t do it for me, but Tyler … yeah, he’s got it going on and got it going on good!  The pictures I’ve found on the web don’t do him justice one bit.  You really need to watch a Pitt game to know what I’m talking about.

Don’t forget, if you spot a stud while watching any of the games, let me know who he is so he can be included in that week’s perks!
