Outsports Tailgate Tour:
Among Trojans
and Bears
Seeing
a University of California football game in Berkley is anything but
laid back, especially with top-ranked Southern California in town. A
trip to Fraternity Row found the frat boys playing a drinking game,
while the Trojan fans were very much in evidence. Then it was game
time.

Hooking Some
Horns
The
gay Texas Exes set up a tailgate just southwest of the stadium at 18th
and Brazos. They told me to look for the RV with an orange tent and
a rainbow Bevo flag. A group of 40-plus guys was tailgating out and
proud in the middle of campus and no one cared or made an issue of
it.

Swamp Things
When
we finally reached Brian’s apartment deep in the heart of the
student ghetto, we were greeted by the sight of 10-12 shirtless
college guys wearing bright orange knee-high soccer socks standing
in front of the apartment building watching TV and drinking.

Tailgating With
the Buffs
To
a tailgating aficionado, it sounded perfect: a stadium in the middle
of a party-happy campus located in the picturesque foothills of the
Rocky Mountains. University of Colorado students students tried
their best to make sure that CU gets back on the Princeton Review
list of top party schools in the country.

¡Vaya
Huracánes!
Attending
a University of Miami game can be a culture shock for
visiting fans. They all have the same “What the
F*%K?!” bewildered, slightly shell-shocked expression
on their faces because there is just no other place in
college football like the Orange Bowl and its
surrounding neighborhood. Plus, check out the
Christmas card being sent by the Miami cheerleaders
(picture).

Love Their Cocks
South Carolina
may be the only place in the nation where a stadium
full of 80,000 rabid, gun-lovin’ fans will yell “Go
Cocks!” without any hint of irony or shame. Or where
T-Shirts proclaim, “You Can’t Beat Our Cocks” on game
day. A look at a college football tradition.

Fine Time at
Fiesta Bowl
The
Fiesta Bowl national championship football game
between Ohio State and Miami was a classic, going two
overtimes before being resolved. We have a report on
our trip to the game, from the mayor's great pregame
party with the Miami cheerleaders (left) to all the
activities at the stadium.

Out On
The Football Field
When
Dwight Slater came out to his football team at Stanford,
then-head coach Tyrone Willingham came up with a game plan to help
Slater come out to the rest of his family and friends. The plan
backfired. Story
