A Gay Games Ambassador's Diary
Returning to the Gay Games
as World Champion in my sport and as an official
Ambassador was always going to be an emotional and
special occasion. Ten magical days in the Windy City,
with expectations high and media attention at fever
pitch. |
 |
First person: Survival on the mat
"The medic says he can't stop the bleeding and he can't
put a bandage on it that will stick. They're going to
stop the match. I now have every gawdam excuse in the
book to leave the match and end my career with a gawdam
honorable exit. If it were any other match, I would
have." |

NYC swim team sets relay record
Four members of Team New
York Aquatics broke a national masters record in the 4 X
50 meter Mixed Medley Relay in the 160-199 age group. |
 |
First person: Marathon man
"People around me think I’m crazy, but I reminded them
the point is to participate, compete to your best
ability, and continue the spirit of these two major
events for our community, worldwide." |

Athletes Grade the Games
Everyone's experience of the Gay Games is different,
depending on what city you come from, what sport(s) you
play, your evening social activities, etc.... Here's how some
participants graded the Gay Games.
Cyd grades the Games
If you ask the
average athlete to grade the Gay Games, they'll give it
a pretty good grade. You'd have to work really hard to
make 12,000 gay athletes converging on a city not
enjoyable. Cyd takes a look at 11 subjects he thinks are
key to the Games, and given the 2006 installment a grade
in each.
Ronit Bezalel grades
the Games
Bezalel attended her first Games and found,
"Yeah, the Games were far from perfect. But the most
important aspect was that everyone I spoke to had a
wonderful time and remarked on the supportive community
spirit."
Jim rates the Games
Having been to five Gay Games, here is where Chicago
ranks.

Tuaolo wins flag football gold
"At the Super Bowl, I
couldn't really be myself; I couldn't really share my
life with anyone. But being myself, being free in the
Gay Games was totally a lot better than the Super Bowl." |
