A few months ago we reported the angry denials by tennis player Richard Gasquet to rumors that he might be gay. Gasquet is now denying it even when not asked the question. At the Tennis Masters Cup in China in mid-November, Gasquet made a point of asserting his heterosexuality once again (Complete interview here):
Q. Now your matches are finished. Do you still have any plan to go around the city maybe with your uncle or your girlfriend?
RICHARD GASQUET: My uncle? No. My girlfriend, no. I have no girlfriend, so I will try to find one, one Chinese girl. Why not? Why not? I lost 6-1, 6-1. It will be very hard for me tonight. I’m ready to lose, you know.Q. Who is the girl watching your match with your uncle?
RICHARD GASQUET: Not my girl. I don’t know. Not my girl, for sure. No, no, no, I have just friends. Men friends, but I’m not gay.
Whew! That clears that up. Gasquet needs to get T-shirts printed up that say, “I’m not gay.” It would stop all the questions. (Hat tip to a reader for sending us the transcript). –Jim Buzinski

But somehow I don’t think even a T-shirt declaring “I’m not Gay” would stop bloggers and websites from hounding him and overanalyzing his every word. Obviously a slow news day.

He’s obviously been to the Larry Craig School of Gay Denial. Did he start by saying “I’m glad you all came out”?

Gasquet’s first language is NOT english for pete’s sakes,he’s French and his English for anyone use to him is terrible and he’s said so himself.
Gay or not,I don’t give a darn and it shouldn’t be the focus.Focus on his game not his sexuality or maybe his denial.
Stop this crap already.
Some might not remember his countrywoman Amelie Mauresmo being called a “half man” by none other than the now accused and retired doper Martina Hingis and insulted by Lindsay Davenport back in 1999.
Mauresmo 10x times the better player than Maria Sharapova doesn’t make a 1/10th of the earning Sharapova gets. Why?Because she’s gay and isn’t marketable;Mauresmo’s agent said during last year’s USO.
France is a tolerant country and they’ve embraced Mauresmo and if Gasquet is gay or not;it won’t change anything.
Go Gasquet!

Wait, I’m confused. Is he or is he not gay? Perhaps someone should ask him again…
on Nov 29th, 2007 at 6:31 PM
I disagree…Mauresmo doesn’t make the money Sharapovea does because she just isn’t as (classically)beautiful. Now that in itself may be wrong but it’s clearly the case. She is manly, and there is no denying that. She also isn’t marketable in the US, her English is as bad as Gasquet’s. Maria S. speaks perfectly. Who is a better player will be decided when they retire and careers are assessed. Richard’s being gay or straight doesn’t matter here either as he’ll never be marketable in the US, if he were, he could sleep with puppies and a way to merchandise him would be figured out.

he’s not gay…he’s 100% straight..wait no maybe 97% cause he’s waaayyyy too good looking to be completely 100% straight…c’mon i bet some manly man has some inner gayness right? it emotionally impossible.
woooh go richard!

oh yeah..actually he seems to messy/scruffy to be gay. read the first link. i totally agree!
on Dec 4th, 2007 at 2:23 AM
I’m going to start referring to him as the Insane-O-Flex. Even though he didn’t preface his gay denial with “I like your booty, but…”
Incidentally, I’m scruffy (haven’t shaved in three days) and messy (there are hair products other than shampoo?!?)… yet I’m as gay as they make ‘em… and the Eagle in my town is full of guys like us…

Whatever! He is a good player and that is he’s personal life and not youres.
on Dec 22nd, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Who cares if he’s gay… I’d f**k that backhand regardless of his sexuality
on Dec 30th, 2008 at 2:19 PM
I just think he is an exceptional tennis player, and once he does his best at that, I could not care less what he does in his personal life. Actually, he should not care either, and do whatever he want’s (not illegal) off the court. I think he just needs to stop worrying what other people want, or expect of him, and live his life. He will, I am sure, be a much happier person. All I know, is that I love watching him play tennis, gay or not.

i wouldn’t say mauresmo was a better player than sharapova but momo’s style of game is definitely much more aesthetically pleasing. if you were to ask a purist tennis fan i am sure they would prefer watching an artist like mauresmo play(when she’s playing well)than maria. only reason most people come to see maria is for maria not her tennis. as for the idea of marketability, the reason maria is such a hot commodity is because she is the generic american-ised princess. nothing more nothing less. you certainly don’t see this with any of the other russian players like dementieva who is much more attractive and classy. even ana ivanovic who’s grown in popularity in the last two years, doesn’t hold a candle to maria’s money machine world and only because she isn’t american. sad thing is no more is that tennis players are no longer appreciated for their tennis anymore it’s almost as if they must have something superficial to offer to the world otherwise they’re not important and are treated lesser than in the outside.
and to clairfy something too, momo, speaks much better english than richard does. a lot more comprehensible. apparently you haven’t heard her speak that much.
as for richard,if he is gay,i could only hope and wish that he could come out but on his own terms not because the media is forcing him to. but i can only imagine the hero he would become for a lot of teenage boys around the world who are discovering their sexuality. but it must for he and he alone.
