Outsports fave Johnny Weir is second after the men’s short program at the world championships in Sweden, behind Canada’s Jeffrey Buttle. Weir is shooting for his first medal in international competition.
Weir was absolutely brilliant in Friday’s short program. It was his best skating since 2006, when he made an Olympic bus molehill into a psychological mountain and had a poor free skate to place fifth.
“I’m not about to count my chickens,” Weir said of possibly winning his first world medal.

Weir has actually won several international medals, including gold at both of his Grand Prix events this season. He’s never won a medal at the World Championships. I sincerely hope he notches one today. Go, Johnny!
