California overturns ban on gay marriage

Not sports-related, but as a California resident and gay man, wow!:

SAN FRANCISCO — The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples should be permitted to marry, rejecting state marriage laws as discriminatory.

The lead attorneys in the case were from the National Center for Lesbian Rights, whose Homophobia in Sports project has done great work in helping gay and lesbian athletes.

Twice the state legislature passed a bill allowing same-sex marriage, only to see it vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who said he wanted to wait for the court ruling. There is also a signature-gathering effort underway that would put an anti-same sex marriage initiative on the state ballot. Schwarzenegger said he would not support such an initiative.

For those wondering about the political makeup of the California Supreme Court, six of the seven justices were appointed by Republican governors and it is considered a centrist court.–Jim Buzinski

This has left me teary-eyed since I heard the news. Now I can finally pursue Al Davis and get a piece of the Raiders before he’s gone. Sniff sniff.

Cyd, if you want to pursue an owner and get part of a team with a bad reputation, shouldn’t you move to Massachusetts and make a play for Robert Kraft?

Congratulations, California friends! That now makes one state I’d be comfortable moving to from Massachusetts.

Now get to work fighting that citizens’ petition….
