Video: Mitcham on his post-gold training

Gold-medal diver Matthew Mitcham, looking sharp in a sports jacket with no tie, gave an interview this month after winning an Australian aquatics honor. He says he is training harder than before the Olympics since he has to make up for taking off nearly two months following Beijing. He also says he is considering riding on a Mardi Gras float during the annual ultra-gay bash in Sydney.

How about an Outsports update on Matt the Man. Is he going to be Grand Marshal (or whatever they call it in Oz) of the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade? Was he (Australian) GQ’s Sportsperson of the Year ? What did he say at the GQ awards ceremony, according to the Sydney Morning Herald? Something like:

“One of TFF’s spies, cleverly disguised as the husband of one of the sponsors, was at the GQ Man of the Year awards, and was particularly interested to note the speech made by Olympic diving gold medallist Matthew Mitcham when he won the Sports Performer of the Year in a strong field. You see, before Mitcham, some winners in other categories had given a fair impression of Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous Oscars speech where she rambled on an thanked everyone bar her neighbour’s cat. Not Mitcham. Marching up to the lectern, he grabbed the mike and simply said “How good is this? I am at the GQ Man of the Year awards – as SPORTSMAN of the year – and I’m a homo!” The crowd, as we say in the trade, went wild.

    You gottta love the kid.
