Based on this item from the Sydney Morning Herald, gold medalist and totally out Matthew Mitcham gave a brief yet killer acceptance speech when he won Australia’s Sports Performer of the Year Award late last month.
You see, before Mitcham, some winners in other categories had given a fair impression of Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous Oscars speech where she rambled on an thanked everyone bar her neighbour’s cat.
Not Mitcham. Marching up to the lectern, he grabbed the mike and simply said “How good is this? I am at the GQ Man of the Year awards as SPORTSMAN of the year and I’m a homo!” The crowd, as we say in the trade, went wild.

Pity there’s no video of it. I wanted to see it.

Enough with Mitcham already. Why can we not go more than two days without having yet another post about him? I don’t need a report every time he sneezes.

He sneezed? OMG, does he have the flu? Will this affect his training? Somebody do something!!!
WTG Matty!

1) We’ve had a whopping nine posts about him in the last three months.
2) According to our readers, Mitcham is the Outsports person of the year. They want to read about him.
3) If you don’t want to read about him, then skip the item.
4) I hear from a friend that Mitcham is just now going to bed, taking it easy on a Saturday night. He is expected to awaken in eight hours.

Can’t we go back to not caring about swimming until 2012? I’m looking at you too, Michael Phelps.

FINALLY there’s an out gold medallist in a deserved spotlight and several readers complain that they’re already tired of reading about him. Give me a break!
Anything about Matthew Mitcham I’ll read. He’s an outstanding diver, a nice guy and a great representative of the gay community.

Matt Mitcham is the best. I for one cannot get enough of him. Thanks for the articles and the pictures. Keep em coming!

I’m with rick and Scott – gotta love Matt Mitcham.
But hey. How can we be gay without the usual dose of snark?

I thoroughly enjoy the posts about Matthew Mitcham. Reading about a successful athlete, openly out as well as proud and comfortable with who is awesome. As well, it makes a nice change of pace from Mike Piazza holding press conference to pre-emptively deny being gay and the scores of other professional athletes who are afraid to have the word gay appear in the same paragraph with their name.
Kudos to Matt and Outsports for the coverage!

I never get tired of articles about Mat Mitcham at all.
In fact, the only problem with the articles is there aren’t enough photos of him in his diver’s Speedo!

There are few things so repulsive as a professional gay .. even when they are a professional gay who also happens to be a sportsman. This is all so very 20th century and just perpetuates the myth that sexual orientation matters. Utterly pathetic.

My God, Matt.
Just because Mitcham isn’t an american doesn’t mean he isn’t allowed every secondd of glory he deserves. If it had beenan american who won that gold medal, would you be so quick to denigrate the achievement and be as desperate to not hear about him? You made no mention of his nationality, granted, but why else would someone get shitty about a supposedly American website reporting great news about someone who’s not a yank?
Like some others have said, if you’re sick of hearing about this ammazing man, skip the articles about him.

Mitcham is a remarkable athelete, remarkable Australian, remarkably comfortable and real with the public, and I’ll be listening to most anything he says because I gain confidence in just witnessing his remarkable composure and behavior.

This is a great story so stop complaining. Matt Mitcham is right in expressing glee (glee?) that he’s a homo and still named GQ Man of the Year. Can you imagine it happening in the US? I love reading stuff like that. He seems like a nice kid and that’s a very handsome picture of him. Good for him!
