He has an agent and Aussie did want him but he, i.e the agent said no.

This is the problem with sportsmen. They are bot very media savvy-apart from American ones!.

But I’ve read that his agent refused a tonne of deals. I wouldn’t be surprised if his agent has some inward kind of homophobia like ALL agents, were one isn’t so sure if they want their star to succeed.

It may seem odd as they would make profits but Mitcham seems so gullible.

An interesting story is when Chayenne Jackson explained a situation when he had to sack his agent because she refused him to do any gay media interview after the Advocate got pissy about a snub…..

Yes true.. but he will always be known as an ‘Olympic Gold Medalist’.. just as an Academy Award Actor will always be known as an “Academy Award Winner” etc etc .. He has longevity as long as he sticks with it and motivated.. maybe his manager should be giving him the confidence he needs to keep going by proactively looking for a sponsor.. We are yet to hear from him !!

A lot of the commentary on this site shortly after the Olympics was questioning the wisdom of Mitcham taking that vacation right away for this very reason. The delay in aggressively seeking sponsorships may have coincided with the declining economy to make things especially difficult for him.

I agree that it would be disappointing if his being an out male athlete exacerbated the situation. But if that was a factor, I think that if he had tried to take advantage of his gold immediately and aggressively, we might now be talking about him just having fewer sponsorships than we think he deserves, rather than none at all.

I’m surprised to read this, and I really hope him being gay had nothing to do with this, discrimination of any kind is most uncool.

I recall him stopping the Chinese sweep, and really hope he picks up sponsorship, he deserves it.
