I personally think it’s bullshit that ANYONE, let alone Michael Phelps, be judged for something they do to their own body. If I were him, I’d let the paper publish a photo of me flipping the bird and a caption that reads, “I don’t care what you think.” I guess it’s just the difference between personal freedom and personal earnings. But then again, I’m sure there are several marijuana friendly companies that would pick him up in a second. I say smoke in the off season, then quit to train and kick ass in competition. Shut the critics up in the pool, and do what you want in your own time. I think it’s a great example of someone who uses cannabis and is still successful. It shows that not every pot smoker is the stereo-typical stoner on the couch in his underwear. Puff, puff, pass Michael!!

Jim Allen so I guess DUI is an acceptable behavior pattern in your mind? Glad we have people like you making judgment calls in today’s world. Remember, Phelps has already had one DUI. Forget it, you apparently don’t get the issues associated with this so it’s no use discussing.

Well if it is Michael Phelps, big deal. I think we’d be a lot better off if
more people smoked marijuana and fewer people drank alcohol. I’ve
been around a lot of stoners and they just get high and mellow, while
far too many drinkers get belligerent and want to fight.

If Michael Phelps is into smoking pipes then good for him. Just because he enjoys smoking a water pipe does not mean he should have to lie about it and talk about the “big mistake” he made. The government makes a mistake every time it enforces marijuana prohibition at the expense of America and good since. Marijuana is a naturally growing weed that flourishes in sunlight. All stigma is political and cultural. Clothes, medicine, ropes, and so much more can be made of this natural earth resource. No known side effects. No overdose. It’s like using any other herb, such as basil or peppermint, to enrich one’s life.

Marijuana is the biggest cash crop in the US, replacing corn.

How many tax dollars could be generated making this naturally growing weed legal? How many jobs? How many sick people made to feel better? How much less crime and jail population?

Marijuana was made illegal in the US by politicians and tobacco men with an agenda.

Marijuana is all in your mind.

Hmm interesting that Michael Phelps, already having said the same “I will not do anything like this in the future” after the DUI incident is getting yet another pass. The point is that marijuana is an illegal substance whether we like it or not. Yet, I don’t believe other stars, particularly football stars have gotten the same slack when their marijuana use came up. Now I don’t care either. I don’t think smoking pot is a big deal, but be consistent. The reactions I’ve heard from some who lashed out at Michael Vick long before the dogfighting allegations came out is hypocrisy at its best.
