Howie Long is giving me a headache

Like me, lots of people are cringing every time they see the commercials Howie Long has cut for Chevrolet. There is so much wrong with these commercials, I will personally never buy a Chevy the rest of my days. The idea that you have to do certain things and be a certain way to be a real man; How can it be that we are still dealing with this nonsense from elite athletes? Like you have to burn lots of gas to be a man, or you have to risk injury to be a man. I guess when you make crappy cars and trucks, you have to cling to yesterday, and that’s exactly what Chevy is doing with this athlete from yesteryear.

I’m left wondering, just how homophobic is Howie Long? Not is he homophobic, but how homophobic is he? That’s what these commercials do to me. Because, of course, you can’t be gay (i.e., get a manicure) and be a real man. I guess that’s the image Long wants to put forward. And if it’s not how the thinks, I guess he can always blame his agent.

Now settle down. I’m not ready to lead a million-gay march on Fox Studios for this. It just churns my stomach every time I see the commercials, and I can’t help it.

Video after the jump.

newsflash: gay men can be manly. and GM’s trucks are competing for who’s brand for quality? Toyota? Nissan? the usual suspects. Has the writer ever owned a real truck?

seems pontification is in fashion and manly energy is NOT.

FYI: Jeeps. the Marlboro Man. do we slam Howie Long or his agent for these Homo ICONS too? or do we berate them as emasculating to the gay community?

Of all the ads that are, or at least are perceived by some to be, anti-gay, THAT’S the one that bothers you?

I’m going to assume this is a joke. If your panties are bent out of shape over this trite crap you need to get a life. If this is how homophobia is defined God help us all.

Just an FYI: Dave Kopay was very appreciative of Howie Long’s strong words of support and praise for Dave’s coming out story having such an impact. Dave has spoke glowingly about Howie for years.

Dude – if you’re getting a manicure, there’s something not right. A guy doesn’t get manicures. You are a sissy.

No, Stefan, you being crass & employing a classic gay-bashing epithet, makes you the “worried sissy” who has something to prove. As a lawyer, in all the years I’ve worked in white-collar jobs, from Real Estate Development to Securities to even the Federal Government, more than 2 thirds of the straight family men (who were also very cool guys about me being out) with whom I’ve worked manicures. It’s a sign to some of urbanity, maybe even vanity, but not being a “sissy” or any such less-than masculine label you want to sling about to prove your own doubtful manhood.

This is how “gorillas” is spelled, not g-u-y-s.

And, with him being on broadcast TV weekly, you can’t tell me that Howie Long (unlike myself, by the way) has never gotten a manicure, that 6’5″, 240 pound sissy!

Jim, do you have a link to Howie Long praising Dave Kopay’s book? I’d be interested to read his comments.

    Mike:
There is no link. I watched NFL games with Dave for years and he frequently told me his Howie story and how much he admired him.

It is a stupid commercial. I am short all of 5’5″ on a good day with just a 24 inch inseam so I would need a “man step” or whatever the hell you want to call it to be able to get into the bed of a truck like that. Does that make me less of a man? Does that make the truck less of a truck? Thankfully I don’t base my masculinity on what others think or what is shown in a commercial.

I had a friend on a gay dating site that swore he was in a long term relationship with Howie,This man was very well endowed and had pictures on his page showing him and Howie at different events. I know everyone will make their own minds up on this as to whetehr it is true or not.But having talked with this guy alot and seeing the photos,I believe that Footballs are’nt the only balls he plays with.

If Howie Long is a homosexual in any way, shape or form I am the POPE. I am not even Roman Catholic. I am anti-Catholic. I believe Roman Catholicism is a false religion same as like Hinduism, Islam or Buddism. If Howie Long is homophobic more power too him. I’m homophobic and anti-”gay” as your kind puts it. I think all you homosexuals and lesbians need to repent of your sins and turn to JESUS CHRIST. Who is GOD INCARNATE. If sins are not forgiven by CHRIST then you will suffer in hell for all eternity.
