Baseball has another scandal brewing on its horizon and this one is a doozy. Former second baseman Roberto Alomar is being accused of knowingly having unprotected sex while “he knew he had AIDS.” Alomar’s ex-girlfriend Ilya Dall has filed a lawsuit in state and Federal court for damages totalling $15 Million for the awful allegations. The New York Daily News reports:
…Alomar finally got tested in January 2006 while suffering from a cough, fatigue and shingles.
“The test results of him being HIV-positive was given to him and the plaintiff on or about Feb.6, 2006,” the $15 million negligence suit says.
…Alomar’s skin had turned purple, he was foaming at the mouth and a spinal tap “showed he had full-blown AIDS,” the suit says.
Alomar retired from baseball 4 years ago due to health issues and has largely stayed out of the limelight since then. Her lawsuit also makes statements about Alomar being raped by two men when he was a teenager, but steadfastly refusing to get tested for HIV. Though, she alleges he tested positive when he moved to Cleveland in the early ’90s.
“He jeopardized the health, well-being and life of the plaintiff, which caused her to have a fear of contracting AIDS, often referred to as AIDS phobia,” the suit says.
Alomar’s camp has been extremely tight-lipped about his HIV status, but has called the lawsuit “baseless.”

If the allegation about him contracting HIV / AIDS from a rape when he was a teenager is true, then I feel very sorry for Roberto Alomar.
It’s sad that he’d rather stick his head in the sand and pretend it never happened, then try and get tested and help manage this disease.

He dated tennis star Mary Pierce for awhile. Her behind needs to get to the nearest place to get an HIV test if she is just learning about this as the rest of us are. Scary.

This woman claims that Alomar was told of his HIV+ status (still not proved) in February 2006, but their relationship did not end until October 2008.
From AP article: “Dall said she was angered by the disclosure and was tested herself; the result was negative. She said follow-up exams determined that Alomar had full-blown AIDS.
By then, she said Alomar had purple skin, was foaming at the mouth and was too sick to walk, forcing him to need a wheelchair to get around at an airport.”
Doesn’t this imply that she knew he had “full-blown AIDS” for over 2 years, and that his condition was so serious that he had purple skin, was foaming at the mouth, and couldn’t walk.
“The lawsuit does not say why Dall continued to have unprotected sex with Alomar. Dall said the couple lived together until last year.”

I heard it was actually Mike Piazza who gave him the virus when they were teammates about seven years ago.

I find it hard to believe that he knew in the 1990′s. When a professional athlete signs a free agent contract or gets traded, as Alomar did numerous times thereafter, they are given extensive physical examinations that include blood tests and are scrutinized by teams expected to fork over millions of dollars.

I just pray that he did’nt know that he was and had Aids. That would be a crime. God Bless both of them.

This just came up on another site. If she was not raped, and she makes no such claim, how did he “insist” on unprotected sex? Women can and do end relationships when a man becomes unreasonable (well, sometimes). Why didn’t she, if she literally feared for her life? Again, no indication that he was threatening violence if she left him.

Quoting from the Centers for Disease Control website: “Most HIV tests are antibody tests that measure the antibodies your body makes against HIV. It can take some time for the immune system to produce enough antibodies for the antibody test to detect, and this time period can vary from person to person…Most people will develop detectable antibodies within 2 to 8 weeks (the average is 25 days). Even so, there is a chance that some individuals will take longer to develop detectable antibodies…Ninety-seven percent of persons will develop antibodies in the first 3 months following the time of their infection. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months to develop antibodies to HIV.”
So if it’s true that he was raped at age 17, about 24 years ago, and if that’s was how he was exposed, I don’t see how his HIV status wouldn’t have been discovered during at least one physical given by any the teams he played on, depending on how routinely they do blood tests. Magic Johnson’s HIV status was found in a physical given by the Lakers’ team doctor.

If that’s the case, it gives that whole “spitting on the umpire” thing back in 1996 a very ominous and sinister angle.
