Sportsmanship cheers amidst the tears

While the gossip and sex get lots of attention, We’re going to try to bring you more stories like this on our blog: Incidents that show the wonder, courage and sportsmanship of sports and the athletes who play them. This one has it in spades. It’s tough to sum up, but a high school basketball player lost his mom hours before he had a game. Her death (he was there by her side) made him late for the game. When he tried to enter the game, the refs weren’t thrilled. Follow this link to see what the opposing team did next.

This is an extremely touching story. This is the first I’ve heard of the coach from the opposing team from any sports doing something like this. Goes to show you that even your “enemy” has a heart. I lost someone earlier this week. Unfortunately for me, it seems everywhere I turn my head someone is losing someone. I guess it’s just coincidence or my mind playing tricks on me.

Amazing story, highlights how there’s capacity in us to do good even in the worst situations.

As a former high school principal, one of my least favorite aspects of the job was attending (better known as SUPERVISING) basketball games. The way parents, spectators, some coaches, and even some of the players acted could be embarassing. I even remember a game where the opposing team walked off the court right at the start of halftime after receiving a technical in the final second of the period. The team walked toward their locker room passing right under our basket as our player was shooting. That was probably the point I started to dislike supervising basketball. I am glad to have read this article, as it shows that high school students CAN do something – not for glory, not for fame – but simply because it is the right thing to do.
