The UConn women’s basketball team completed a perfect regular season at 30-0. How special is it? It’s better than losing a game, I suppose. Though some may argue that losing a game in the regular season helps a team focus, given they’ve won two by winning them all already, I don’t think that applies. But whereas there hasn’t been an undefeated men’s team in Division I since 1976 (Indiana), there have been four women’s teams to go through the season and NCAA tournament undefeated since 1986, and Connecticut’s already done it twice in the last 15. So when Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma says, “No matter how great we are or how wonderful we are that the real story is if we don’t win the national championship,” I believe him.

Yes, it’s a big deal b/c UConn is totally badass, so is Geno. It also helps that they have the best player in the country (Maya Moore), the best point guard in the country (Renee Montgomery), probably the #1 pick in the 2010 WNBA draft (Tina Charles), and a coach who has won 5 National Championships…
ps. Just think how good they would be if they had Elena Delle Donne (think a female version of Dirk N.), sharshooter Caroline Doty, and Heather Buck…

30-0 is remarkable whether we are talking women’s or men’s basketball. UConn still has to navigate the Big East Tourney and the NCAA tourney to finish the season undefeated. Men’s basketball has more recently had teams finish the regular season undefeated (St. Joseph’s 2004, UNLV 1991), but they were unable to win the post-season tourneys.

Why is it a knock to be undefeated in Women’s College Basketball when it happens frequently (almost expected) in College Football?
It’s an accomplishment. UConn should be applauded for their excellence throughout the season.
