From his interview with NBC:
I mean, we all know what, you know, what you and I are talking about. It’s a stupid mistake. You know, bad judgment. And it’s something that, you know, I have to, and I want to teach other people not to make that mistake. … So, you know, the contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed. But, you know, I think the biggest thing is who I hurt the most. Like, if I lost money, OK. It’s not an issue with me.
Like, you know?

Michael: Keep your mouth shut from now thru the next Olympics. Whenever you want to open up and say something publicly, dive into a pool instead.

Considering Michael’s young age and America’s intensely insane & hypocritical inclusion of marijuana as a “controlled substance” while almost universal access to alcohol goes along its merry way medically crippling 10′s of 1,000′s of folks yearly, as an attorney I must say that his above quoted response would receive raucous applause from me were I his lawyer! We all know what we are supposedly talking about, but to mention it by name would be more stupid than wearing a Mogen David in Palestine. The kid is brilliant in his own unique way. You go, Mr. Phelps! Don’t let the do-nothings of this quotidian world drag you down, man! Your forte is swimming, and that’s where you can make your mark for the ages, good guy. As to the rest of your “private” time here on this earth, live it as best you can, remembering that you don’t owe ANYONE the duty to speak. Many millions of us Americans are sublimely pleased that you work so damned hard to be the exceptional athlete that you are (and always will be!)

“Like totally, bro, that was just wicked!”.
I swear this guy sounds like me when I get “water logged” after a day surfing at the beach during the summer.

Phelps is a swimming machine…beyond that, a bonehead. Semi-related: athletes on ‘roids. A bud at work has a solution – require all to do juice and level the playing field.

Wow…he sounds like a guy in his early 20s…
on Mar 14th, 2009 at 12:10 AM
He’s 23 or 24 now, so you’re spot on, Chris.

One would think since he’s given so many f’in interviews that he’d be getting better at this. He should read the transcript and learn from it how to speak better on camera.
That being said I am sympathetic. The 1st time I was deposed by a defense attorney in a case where I was an expert witness for the prosecuting side I read the transcript and did not come out looking as good as I had hoped. I got so very much better the next time and each time since when I have been deposed, interviewed, or testified ever since that 1st depo.
I am a big Phelps fan. I admire his athleticism, dedication and determination. If he can do what he does in the pool and have the odd bong hit so the f’ck what. Much a do about nothing. Most the the folks in the US need to loosen up, do a bong hit and get laid.
He is so hot and almost perfect when he’s in the pool, glaring at the clock w/his goggles up, cap on (hiding those ears) and mouth shut (hiding those teeth). Out of the pool he’s just fine too. Go Mike!

That picture is disturbing.

Wow, Cyd, you and I were so much more articulate back when we were 23 and won all our gold medals!!!
The guy skipped his Dale Carnegie classes and made a couple of quite serious mistakes, but you must really be running low on snark-targets.

whatever… I’d love to smoke a bowl with him…

Michael appears to be a cool guy. HOWEVER, ever since it was announced that he is dating Miss California – that hypocritical slut that posed for nake pics and is homophobic – I question HIS real opinion on gays and lesbians. Is HE homophobic?
on Jul 5th, 2009 at 9:55 PM
David,
Miss California said the exact same thing President Obama said on gay marriage. He a homophobe, too?
