There are few filmmakers I love more than Clint Eastwood. So I was excited to see some shots from his next film, The Human Factor, about South Africa’s run to the Rugby World Cup in 1995 that helped bring some unity to the country post-apartheid. The movie stars Matt Damon who, as you can see, will at the very least be wearing some rather short shorts. The film’s expected release date is December of this year. Hopefully it will be as good as one of his past sports films.

So call me picky, but Ian Roberts should be playing the role Damon has. But if this is popular maybe there will be a copycat version, or an even more original movie, with Roberts playing a coach.

Scott Eastwood in a rugby shorts could be interesting though. That’s him on the left in this link:

with actor Cory Hardrict at the world premiere of Gran Torino.

Ian Roberts? My guess is they were looking for a real actor, and one who could sell tickets.

Scott Clintwood? What part did he have in Gran Turino? o.O
Matt Damon all the way! Love his acting and the guy is really funny.

How old is Matt Damon now? He’s got to be pushing 40. It’s a bit of a stretch for me to picture him playing a world class rugby player.
I don’t know much about rugby, but I’d be surprised if there are too many world class rugby players that compete beyond their early 30s. It’s such a tough, athletic, demanding sport that it’s hard to imagine one’s body could last much beyond the early 30s.

This project is a more interesting story than Americans realise. 1995 was the most important rugby year for decades. More than apartheid, it is also the critical period that rugby union went professional and great drama between players, Packer and Murdoch vying for control, urban vs. regions, fathers vs. sons, etc. The game itself that day was a last-minute result and even more controversial was claims that winners South Africa poisoned the favoured New Zealand team the night before. I’m encouraged by Eastwood (great director), Damon (absolute Afrikaner look), Freeman (actor), are involved in what could be an Oscar event of a sports subject.
