The biggest upset of the first round of the NCAA college basketball tournament has to be Ball State toppling Tennessee. In the women’s tournament. The Lady Volunteers are the two-time defending champs and were 42-0 in the first two rounds of the tournament before being routed by the Cardinals, 71-55. While the Volunteers had lost 11 games this season, they were the fifth seed and strong favorites in the game; Ball State was the 12-seed. Upsets like this are few and far between in women’s basketball. There tends to be a larger disparity of talent between the haves and the have-nots; and Tennessee has been in the “haves” department for many years.

While I respect Pat Summitt immensely, this could not have happened to a nicer bunch of fans.

The graphic in the Washington Post was incredibly illuminating:
The Lady Vols have NEVER not made the Sweet Sixteen. NEVER.
She is such a great coach.

Hi all…..I’m still down about this loss. The Lady Vols are my favorite sports team and Summit is, by far, my favorite coach. This team just couldn’t stay healthy and keep their heads in the game for 40 minutes. I can’t believe their incredible run of Sweet 16 appearances are over. Oh well, Tennessee always comes back!

I’m a fan of collegiate women’s basketball since I was 13. And I’m gay male! I have enormous respect for Pat Summitt and her successes. But I have no respect for the Lady Volunteers’ fans — they’re obnoxious to a point where I practically cheer every team to beat UT as many as can be.
OH, by the way, I’m diehard fan of Virginia Cavaliers. Losing to Cal Golden Bears was quite disgraceful and Debbie Ryan needs to retire — the game has passed her by already!
