Now that the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team has steamrolled to another national title and a 39-0 record, the question has to be asked: Where do they rank among the greatest college basketball teams of all time? Consider these tidbits. They are only the 11th Division 1 college basketball eam (men or women) to go undefeated; They’re the first since the UConn women did it in 2002. They won all 39 of their games by double digits. Their closest margin of victory in the tournament was 19 points (against Arizona State and Stanford). Those are crazy numbers, and to me they’re in the conversation for best college basketball team ever.

2002 team was the best EVER, and it’s not even close. 2002 had 3 future Olympians (Bird, Taurasi, and Cash), and all 3 are among the only 6 players in basketball history to win a NCAA title, WNBA title, and Olympic gold. All 5 starters were 1,000+ point scorers. 2 starters, Bird and Taurasi, earned NPOY honors. The 4 seniors went in the top 6 in the WNBA draft; the sophomore, Taurasi, was the #1 pick in 2004.
I would say the 1998 Tennessee team is better than the 08-09 UConn team as well…
