How great is it when reporters forget or don’t realize they’re live? This one from Roger Millions on Rogers Sportsnet trying to get the name of a Calgary defenseman right.

A couple of things…
1. This wasn’t completely his fault. Obviously the first rule of broadcasting is to always assume the mic is “hot” (aka on). But this was a live-to-tape stand up that he did so as such, the editors and VTR operators should NEVER have allowed this to get past them. Pure laziness on their part.
2. Roger is an absolute professional. We all make mistakes and I sincerely hope that his career isn’t remembered for a mistake that for the most part, he had no control over. I can also tell you, from knowing him personally, that this truly does come at a terrible time for him. I won’t go into details but it’s unfortunate that this is happening right now.
But guess what, as a great professional he’ll shake this off and keep on goin strong.

So was that one of multiple takes and the techs aired the wrong one? Is it bad that I didn’t find it offensive at all?

Definitely not a live feed. He was about to do another take.

let’s put one thing to rest. this was not a live hit. Cyd, how great is it when someone published something before getting their facts straight. Millions did what thousands of other reporters (and citizens) do when they make a mistake. he cursed.

I think Cyd gets too busy and just throws something up without verifying it just to have new stories. If he had taken 60 seconds to watch the footage he would have seen that it wasn’t live.

Lol. You guys are hysterical. Of course I watched the video, and I thought the pause after his “cocksucker” was odd. I didn’t attack the guy I just said I thought it was great. And yeah you’re right, it was taped. Still, I don’t understand why these guys always need to launch into profanities when they screw up. When we record our podcast and we screw up, I don’t start swearing into the mic.
Personally, when I’m being interviewed on tape or film either live or recorded, I always assume that what I say while mic’d will be broadcast. This guy forgot that rule of thumb and got caught. I haven’t seen anyone attack this guy’s integrity or professionalism: He made a mistake, the guy on the board made a mistake, and we all got a chuckle out of it.

I think the part that bothered me is that you wrote…
“How great is it when reporters forget or don’t realize they’re live?”
That one sentence is the only Outsports content and it’s erroneous.
