Weekend hot jock: Skater Jeffrey Buttle

With the retelling this week of the anti-effeminate movement in figure skating, we figured we’d highlight one of the real cuties from the last few years of figure skating: Jeffrey Buttle. The Canadian skater was the 2006 Olympic bronze medalist and the 2008 World Champion. Before he focused on skating, he was studying chemical engineering at the University of Toronto. He’s 5-foot-8 and was born and still lives in Ontario.

Interestingly, just as Skate Canada began their crackdown to make figure skating more masculine, Buttle retired from competitive skating: An odd move and odd timing given the Winter Olympics are in Canada in a year.

More pics after the jump.

He “dated” Joannie Rochette for 4 years, did a magazine spread with her like they were newly weds. Used to take her to the Skate Canada annual dinners, arm and arm. When all his team mates from Mariposa SC, ran to raise money for the LGBT Youth Suicide line, Jeffrey Buttle left town. he was the only one not to show.

I hope you are not looking for a role model. He also went on a fund drive for World Vision Christian Ministries in South America last August. WV is one of 12 members of the WEA (World Evangelical Association). WV refuses to hire homosexuals because they are against the Evangelical faith and Jeff Buttle helped them raise money.

I think you can do WAY better than this guy. How about Jeremy Abbott or Johnny Weir?

Jeff Buttle is AMAZING~ but hold the phone, is he homosexual? I wasn’t aware….in any case I LOOOOVE HIM!! best figure skater ever!!

I saw jeremy abbott live a couple months ago, and to be honest, he didn’t have much of a spark…..his jumps were sensational, though.

Buttle is a super cutie, and had some of the best skating technique around. I do think if we are discussing hotties in skating we have to include Johnny Weir, Scott Smith, Matt Savoie, and a few from the past…Alexie Yagudin and Ilia Kulik.

So many hot male skaters……..no wonder I love the sport so much!

Oh……..this whole, “Let’s butch up male figure skating” is a lost cause. Skaters like Elvis have been around for decades, trying to “man-up” the sport. Even the wonderful Scott Hamilton went on a maculine parade during his competitive years. However, skaters like Weir have also been around for decades, and as far as I can tell from competing and coaching, and having most of my friends in the sport, the gays are still a-plenty in the sport, and many of them, LOVE the beautiful side.

What does Skate Canada want? Johnny Weir to show up on the ice at the Olympics wearing something plain? Hello….this is Johnny Weir! Bring out the icicles on coke and the care bears on acid!

I love skating, and I love the Olympics!…bring on the drama!!!!!!

And, congrats to another “masculine parading” skater, Evan Lycacek, for winning the world championships :)

Haha, so true~ Olympic drama rocks my socks..

but, if we’re mentioning hot figure skaters- anyone know Adam Rippon? 2008 and 2009 World Junior Champion…..yes, indeedy.

in response to Samuel- I’m not sure about Buttle…..does anyone else know? I’m curious also.

He’s awesome! Actually, I’ve met him a couple of times at the Patrick 4 Life run a couple years ago (an AIDS awareness run in North Bay). He actually won a medal in the run too I think! Spoke to him about the pride run in Toronto and said he sadly had to miss it because of training in California. In any case, the guy was a speaker at the AIDS awareness run in North Bay and did a wonderful job, and though I don’t really follow the sport I can say that he is a very good speaker and ambassador.

Actually, KB he lied to you about being in California and missing the Pride Run. In 08 he was at Skate Canada’s training camp at the BMO building in Toronto, the day before the Pride Run. In 09 Jeff even twittered from Toronto on Pride Run Sunday, but never ran.

He also brought Tessa Virtue as a date to the MMVA’s in Toronto June 09. Pictures of their date on the CTV site, after years of pretending to date Joannie Rochette.

Additionally, Jeff Buttle publically supports the anti-gay World Vision Christian Ministries. So what ever he did in North Bay, 7 years ago, he has changed.

He is the worst kind of closeted homosexual and the only Canadian one still supporting Skate Canada’s “Tough” Campaign to De-Gay figure skating.

The complete opposite of everything you are trying to hint at, is the actual truth. Jeff Buttle is not a good person.

He’s hot and straight…sorry guys….You are just bitter because you don’t stand a chance with him. And just because he did some missionary work does not make him anti-gay. Geez…man up guys….haha. You bitch worse than us women…

Seriously….missing a pride run does not make him homophobic…get a life men

You gay dudes complain about oppression and stuff…but you don’t even realize that you are hypocrites…yes, there is something called heterophobia….and i too, am gay…..it’s people like you that give us gays/queers a bad name….go suck your self off ass hole….nasty man you

    Dear Joanne,

First off, you sound like a str8 person who has issues. But I’ll just play along –

I don’t think anyone really cares that much about Jeffrey. ESPN may talk about Mike Vick and his dogs or Brett Farve and his addiction; we talk about gay stuff that interests us in addition to the sports. The negativity of your posts kind of makes you out to be the very type of person you are trying to critique, a bitter, jaded, and angry lesbian who needs to find a woman to satisfy her so she won’t spend her night attacking anonymous gay men on a sports site. Try to stay away from the Valium before posting next time. Or better yet, come out of the closet already and live your life.

Okay, firstly, I really really get sick of the forced dichotomy in the LGBT community. See that third letter there? That’s a B. B for Bi-sexual. Why, exactly, can’t JB be Bi? I mean, obviously his efforts at having “relationships” with Joannie and Tessa are forced at best, and the clips I’ve seen of him interacting wtih Mao boarder on cruel, but that’s his business not ours.

Secondly, as far as his alleged “missionary work” (which I find hard to believe), I’m going to go by the tried and true internet axiom.

    Pics or it didn’t happen.

I read recently that Jeff and his sister Meghan and mom Leslie did a “Pride” run and jeff even medaled. Stop picking on him. Jeff has a good soul. Straight or not, he is a great skater and nice guy. Yes, he did do Missionary work like Jennifer Robinson. The ones who say he doesn’t probably don’t do any good deeds at all.

Jeff just finished a 5 k run for Pride the other day. His group raised around 16, ooo. He was quite tired afterwards but felt great doing his part. Adam Rippon did the run as well.

So, where is everyone now? Feeling bad because Jeff after all did a Pride Run? I believe he was on Brian Orser’s team.

Jeffrey did another “Pride Run”. He has done a few of them now. Even had fast time running. He was proud to do it as well. He is a really nice guy. He and Joannie have been super close friends for years. So why is it a big deal when they hang out together?
