Maine legalizes gay marriage

While we stick almost exclusively to sports on this site, we have stepped away from that from time to time to cover gay-marriage news. The latest is great news out of Maine, as the State Senate today passed the House’s bill to legalize gay marriage, and Governor Baldacci has signed it. His statement about signing it was great, because it showed that someone who is against the idea of gay marriage can still be for the law:

“In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions,” Baldacci said in a written statement. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.”

This news is of particular importance to me, as I spent a lot of time there as a kid, and my parents live in Maine. My mother went to August two weeks ago to testify in front of the State Senate on behalf of gay marriage. Thanks Mom!
