News flash: Homophobia lives on in Chicago baseball. At the recent Cubs-White Sox series, fans of the White Sox apparently decided that it would be fun to point out how Gaaaaay the Cubs are. Some wore t-shirts with the image to the right, produced by Chi-City Tees. The company’s delightful pitch for the shirt:
THE HOTTEST AND TRUEST T-SHIRT ON THE SOUTHSIDE…WE ALL KNOW THE CUBS HAVE THEIR PARADE…GAY…AND THE SOX HAD THEIRS…CHAMPIONSHIP PARADE…
They have other lovely homophobic and racist shirts. Pics and more after the jump.
Because “we all know” that being gay is baaaaad and you can’t win a championship if you’re gay. Richard Roeper wrote about one exchange he heard in the bathroom at a game:
In the men’s room on Friday, after the game: Sox fan walks in, does an exaggerated prance and shouts in a lispy voice, “I’m a Cubs fan, where are the gay bars?”
He says this about 10 times, over and over, until a Cubs fan in line finally says, “Why don’t you go home and beat your wife?”
The response from Mr. Genius: “Maybe I will!”
Because calling a man gay is STILL the most offensive thing you could call them. Crazy.
Hat tip to Towleroad.

In the Sox fans defense, Wrigley field is not only about a block away from ‘boystown’ it only about 4 blocks away from Sidetrack, which I believe is actually the largest gay bar in the world (bar being separate from club). And, the Cubs do hold an annual ‘gay day’ during June.
So Wrigley Field and the Cubs are kind of gay.
Of course if you think the T-Shirts are bad I suggest you head down to the Wiener’s Circle on Clark St late Friday or Saturday night and order the ‘chocolate milkshake.’ You will then get an idea why demographers had to invent a new term to describe Chicago’s “hyper-segregation”.

I think these are hilarious! The first one is just dumb, but the other two cracked me up! Have some humor!

#2 - I understand humor that is clever, edgy, satiric. This humor is not, it uses stereotypes that are harmful that humiliate. It does not critique them or pull them apart in any way. It simply uses them and in so doing, fuels more prejudice.

Funny as a crutch.

I think it’s funny but it also doesn’t really help gay-straight relations…but I do appreciate the humor of it, and Wrigley is pretty much in the gay district…

really funny

Sometimes, humor depends on context. I can see where, in certain settings, the “Wrigley Field/’very’ friendly confines” shirt might be funny. The other two are just ignorant, particularly the Cards/Pujols one.

These are the same White Sox fans that run out on to the field and beat 65 year old coaches, so I wouldn’t put too much weight on what some low I.Q. morons say or do.

Have you ever checked out that T-shirt company’s Bears shirts? Like the “Green Gay Fudge Packers” shirt?
