Fire Island swim event

There’s a great innaugural event taking place in New York next month: The Great South Bay Swim. It’s an open-water swim from Sayville to Fire Island Pines and it’s to benefit the Stonewall Foundation, a group that seeks to “better” the gay community. The swim is the brainchild of Michael Holtz (right), a former collegiate swimmer at Fordham. You can find more about the event on Facebook and at the Stonewall Foundation Web site.

And is this a far swim? I mean, open water is rathr cold anyway – but for long.. this might be impressive!

My guess is it’s about 3 miles, which is pretty impressive.

Its the Great South Bay…..a body of water between the south shore of Long Island and the north shore of Fire Island. Not too deep or cold for the matter.

Yeah, it’s 5k, which is about 3.3 miles. Deadline to register is Thursday, Aug. 6. Registration is almost full, so if anyone is interested, get those registrations in ASAP to secure yourself a slot.

It’s between three and four miles and of necessity would follow the same route (south southeast) as the ferry from Sayville, so I suppose there’s been some sort of coordination with the ferry people. The water is 7-8 feet deep in most spots, and there’s typically an afternoon southwest wind kicking up 1-2 foot waves that would be coming at about your right shoulder. I presume a morning start, when the wind is usually from the north and the bay is basically flat.

I used to be a competitive sailor there. Good luck all.

YEAH! That’s a long swim!! Good for you all who participated! We have the Swim For Life here in Provincetown in a week and a half. It’s a 1.4 mile swim from the lighthouse to the Bostslip….I’ll tell you….it’s long enough for me! Congrats again!
