USC’s freshman quarterback Matt Barkley grabbed lots of headlines after beat the San Jose State School of the Blind Spartans last week. Stewart Mandel of SI even called him “the next Joe Montana” after his first college start. I’ll tell you this: I never found Joe Montana as hot as I find Barkley; and I’m not into blondes (as a general rule). A little on Barkley: It was his birthday last Tuesday…he turned 19. He’s from Newport Beach, stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 220 pounds. He actually graduated high school a semester early so he could attend USC in January and be a part of spring practice.
I don’t know aobut Joe Montana, but I see a young Tom Brady: I have the feeling that we’ll be talking about Barkley here at Outsports for a long time to come . . .

cute guy, but I think he won’t peak looks-wise for at least 4-5 years, at which point he’ll be positively drool-worthy…..

This is one man from Ohio who is thrilled that USC and Matt Barkley were able to come out of the “Collision in Columbus” with a win. I can only imagine the media reaction to an OSU victory, had their chosen one emerged from the steaming bowels of hell that Ohio Stadium apparently is, without a win and the “Hollywood Ending” the media seemed to need.
I lost count of the number of times ESPN Personality and Head Barkley Disciple Brent Musberger reminded the assembled masses that yes Matt Barkley is a “true” freshman and he has led his followers to the hostile environment of the Buckeye Nation. Even when he suggested to the national audience that it was time for the coaching staff of USC to call Barkley over to the sidelines for a “blow” it was not enough.
Bravo to the Trojan team for their win. Of course, to hear most of the media speak of it, USC was pre-ordained to win as the Buckeyes are apparently lucky to even be considered a football team, so a USC victory was a given.
Good luck to Matt on the rest of the season. I hope that the media doesn’t destroy you with their expectations of salvation!

He also said, “Praise God,” 4 times in the post-game interview. And I saw him praying out loud for quite a while before the game. I don’t know about you, but the majority of the people I’ve come across who are very public about their faith don’t like us ‘mos.
on Sep 13th, 2009 at 4:39 PM
I agree w/ Joetx. Why does every football game have to be a revival meeting? Once upon a time, people were content to pray in private, but now it has to be a big Pharisee-style demonstration of faith.
I’ve grown up with guys like Barkley. They go to Promise-keepers, praise Jebus, and break your heart. Gay men are suckers/masochists for guys like this. Maybe you should ask for an interview Cyd and see what he thinks of us?

Wow a football player is also a bible thumper what a shock. NEWSFLASH the world of sports is filled w/ dumb jocks who don’t understand science, it’s much simpler to believe in a bearded guy in the sky blessing them w/ athletic prowess. if we are to only ogle the non-believers we’d have ZERO athletes to gaze upon. but if you want a religious litmus test, gary, for every athlete, you should probably entertain yourself some other way than watching sports cuz you’ll find few to meet your standards.
on Sep 13th, 2009 at 9:44 PM
Litmus test?, nah…I just refuse to carry a torch for bigots. If you want to moon over him, be my guest. I’m sure a lot of gay men thought Max Schmeling was adorable too.
on Sep 13th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
thanks i will continue to moon over whoever i wish, and if you wanna continue to think the whole world hates you, be my guest. guessing by your attitude, i think the world does, but being gay factors very little in that…..

Oddly enough scientists will be the first to tell you they dont have all the answers…
So what if the dude displays his faith? Does not change the fact that he is a good looking young guy.
on Sep 13th, 2009 at 11:21 PM
All of this reminds me of something a female friend told me once:
“Yeah, guys think with their little heads instead of their big heads, but I guess gay men do it too”.

It’s a free country. You can ogle anyone you’d like.
I don’t know if Barkley is homophobic or not. I was just making some observations of what I saw or have experienced.
But if Barkley fits the mold & we give him a pass b/c he’s “hot,” aren’t we just fulfilling every stereotype about us, that we’re superficial & shallow?
It’s not like there aren’t enough physically attractive men out there. Why can’t we be more discerning?
on Sep 14th, 2009 at 9:02 AM
He looks constipated, hardly sexy.
on Sep 14th, 2009 at 9:14 AM
My friend and I have decided after just two games he’s the best looking guy in college football. Hands down. The best.
on Sep 14th, 2009 at 2:31 PM
Looks just like another average looking white guy.

I found it very telling that in the aftermath of USC’s comeback win against Ohio State the media “annointed” Barkley as the second coming of Joe Montana and John Elway all in one.
USC scored exactly one touchdown in the 2nd half of that game on an 81 yard drive late in the half. USC running back Joe McKnight accounted for 64 of the 81 yards. Barkley made one difficult pass the entire drive. Yet listening to the so-called experts you’d think Barkley accomplished the drive almost on his own.
on Sep 15th, 2009 at 8:52 PM
In comparison to recent SC QBs Mark Sanchez and Matt Leinert, this dude is VERY average and unremarkable in the looks dept. And Im with all of those who were put off by the thanking god stuff. I expect it from my black brothers and dont care much for it then. Coming from white dudes its just downright scary. Usually goes hand in hand with some Tony Dungy type marriage bigotry.
on Sep 15th, 2009 at 11:27 PM
He is not handsome at all.
on Nov 3rd, 2009 at 7:18 PM
Matt’s a friend of mine, we went to Mater Dei together and I am a freshman just like he is at USC. He’s very spiritual and has no problem with me or any of his other gay/lesbian friends.
Way to make sweeping generalizations, you dumb queens.
on Nov 3rd, 2009 at 8:01 PM
“Way to make sweeping generalizations.”
Yep, always a mistake, and gays can be no better than anyone.
on Feb 28th, 2011 at 12:37 AM
Looks like the people saying this guy is a homophobe (I’ve been telling my friends this for a while) were proven right today.
