I have heard people gay Angelenos talking about a gay sports bar in L.A. for years. On Oct. 2 those people will have to wait no longer as Gym Sportsbar will open it’s West Hollywood location. It’s a great spot they found: The former Normandie Room at 8737 Santa Monica Blvd. (between San Vicente and La Cienega). In New York, Gym is the most popular gay bar (sports or otherwise) in Chelsea. They always have games on and are packed almost every night. Plus, the owners are super supportive of (and active in) gay sports teams and leagues.
You’ll definitely find me watching football some Sundays and Monday at their new West Hollywood spot. Check out all their info in a press release after the jump.

They open at noon on a Sunday when the NFL starts here at 10 a.m.? Seems odd for a sports bar.

They’re trying to figure out how to work around the NFL schedule. Do people in LA go to bars to watch games at 10am? That’s the question they’re asking. I certainly don’t (and don’t know).

Ok, wake up Philly! Time to prove some of that “Brotherly” (and Sisterly) Love we use to brag about before it started sounding too “gay”.

“Do people in LA go to bars to watch games at 10am?”
Absolutely during the NFL season, but I am talking about mainstream sports bars that often cater to fans of a certain team. Not sure if the Gym Bar demo would show up; could be that the gay guys who go to bars to watch games already have their favorite spot where they can root with fans of their favorite team.

A sports bar not open in time for the start of NFL games…oooookay…
on Sep 21st, 2009 at 9:16 pm
The bar I’ve always “longed” and “prayed” for? Gay, completely gay.

Is there going to be an Outsports launch party? I might show up at 10am but probably not, more likely I’d catch the 4pm EST games and then stay out. Then again if it were the NBA I’d probably venture out for a 10am game or if it were satellite television showing a soccer match I’d definitely venture out really early. LA baby, LA!

Anyone been to the location in Chelsea? Do they play music really loudly so that you have to scream at your friend standing two feet away when you want to explain why the Patriots are a true Source of Evil? I would hope the music only comes on when there’s not a game on.

Jim Allen, blaring music ONLY comes on when you’re trying to explain how the Patriots are the Source of Evil

I stop by the Chelsea location quite a bit. It’s my favorite bar in NY. I’d say stop by the new Gym bar in LA once it opens and give it a chance.
Regarding the music issue, most times I’ve been to Gym in NY there is music playing. But that is almost out of neccessity due to the number of different games on the many big screens.
When there is a Huge event like the Super Bowl, World Series, Kentucky Derby, etc. they usually have the event sound playing. Gym here in NYC has excellent, friendly bartenders, great quality big screens, little to no attitude and is most simply put a lot of fun.

Where do I pick up my VIP pass?
I don’t remember the Normandy Room being very large. Will GYM:LA fit us all?

I used to go the Pilsner Inn in SF at 10:00 a.m. to watch football. There were maybe 15 of us by halftime. It was a blast. A beer buzz by noon is always a lot of fun.

The Pilsner Inn is a good spot. Kind of a post-gay, post-scene atmosphere though it’s obviously a gay bar.

I loved GYM in New York. I want one in San Francisco
on Sep 25th, 2009 at 12:30 am

Who else will be showing up @Gym this coming weekend?
I won’t be there Friday because I have a B-day party, Zombieland comes out and I STILL haven’t gotten my VIP pass!
But look for me;
Saturday: Cal v USC
Sunday: probably all day but definitely SNF SD v Pitt. (We gotta get those doors unlocked at 10:00 a.m.)
Monday: the WeHo MNF crowd will be there in full force to check out the new digs and to watch the Packers pummel the Vikings.
Come join us! I’ll be wearing either a USC cap or a Chargers cap.
on Sep 28th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I’ll be there to watch UCLA slay Stanford on sat at noon, then for sure for Bolts-Steelers on Sunday!
on Nov 16th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I am sorry, but you are not a sports bar if you skip the first half of Sunday’s first NFL game. You are, my friend, a fetish bar for boys looking for sporty boys.
If you want to be taken seriously, invest a little and open 2 hours earlier. Instead, I continue to drop my coin in straight — and sometimes hostile — bars because they are about sports first.
