A group of Michiganders is forming a new organization in Ann Arbor specifically for gay student-athletes. The new Michigan Athletes and Allies Partnership aims to build a “new group at U of M working to raise awareness and give voice to the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied student-athlete.” Paul Farber, a former college athlete and co-founder of Penn’s Athletes and Allies Tackling Homophobia, is one of the organizers. Michigan Athletes and Allies Partnership (MAP) is a student group committed to addressing the mutual concerns of U of M’s LGBT and student-athlete communities. MAP gives voice to the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied student-athletes. Our goals are:
1) To create awareness around LGBT issues in athletics at U of M
2) To establish permanent resources and a support system amongst student-athletes, coaches, the Athletic Department, and the greater University community
3) To foster a safe environment for all student-athletes regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity
Join us for our first meeting! We welcome all students and student-athletes interested in hearing more about MAP or helping us give a voice to LGBT issues in athletics.

I think it’s absolutely wonderful whenever groups like this can come together! I wish MAP, as well as PATH and Our Group the best of luck. It’s wonderful that UPenn, Michigan, and Purdue have students who are taking the initiative to help create an inclusive environment for all athletes regardless of race, religion, country of origin, or sexual orientation as well as gender identity.
