Unfortunately for people who enjoy comedy and have a good sense of humor, Jimmy Fallon hosts the Late Night show on NBC. Yesterday he decided to go after the Gay Games’ choice of Cleveland to host the 2014 Games:
It was announced yesterday that Cleveland, Ohio, will host the 2014 Gay Games. That’s weird, I thought New York always hosted the Tony Awards. But maybe I’m wrong. When they heard that the Gay Games were in Cleveland, Ohio, San Francisco was like, uh, hello!
Seriously? Is it 1997? Or is Fallon just stuck there? I’m all for picking on anyonen for humor’s sake, but these jokes are so lame. Who equates a gay event with the Tonys? But even more ridiculous, who thinks San Francisco is the center of the gay universe? It hasn’t been since Fallon was about 12. The rest of his monologue was just as out-of-touch and unfunny. Good thing they have an “applause” light for the audience, or you’d hear crickets chirping.
Maybe Fallon should try this one on his next show: “Hey, I saw the monologue of Jimmy Fallon’s show recently, and I thought it was Saturday Night because he obviously brought over the same terrible writing he had on SNL.”
Hat tip to Ross Forman.

“Who equates a gay event with the Tonys?”
Are you kidding? The Tonys are as gay as a brunch at Brian Boitano’s house. (However, the jokes – and Jimmy Fallon – are still pretty lame…)

Maddog = Not offended. Jimmy Fallon = Still not funny.

Yes Todd, I do know that. But there are so many more current, more interesting things to associate a gay event with. How about a circuit party? Something having to do with Vermont (and their legalization of marriage)? Even a New York Mets joke. But the Tonys? I wasn’t saying the Tonys aren’t gay, but rather that there are so many other things people would find funnier and more current.
And I didn’t think it was offensive, just really, really lame.

i dont find it offensive, not very funny but not something to call him out on, we need to lighten up

I’m with maddog. I’m not sure what the comments were less…offensive or funny. Because they were neither.

News flash, late night talk shows are lame and unfunny. As they have been for years.

Stop being so offended at everything. Gay jokes are funny just like jokes about Italian, Polish, Jewish, Black, Fat, Skinny, Short, Tall, Chinese, Japanese Drivers, Blondes, Rednecks, Republicans, Democrats, and any other group you can name.
Everyone is sooooooo sensitive, just laugh for a change and stop looking for the insult in everything. Do you really think Fallon was trying to insult the gays or the Broadway gang, or that Letterman intended a sexual insult on Palin’s daughter? Just laugh already and let it go.

I didn’t think Jimmy Fallon was funny on SNL and he’s even less so on his late night snooze fest.
If you want true comedy on late night TV then Craig Ferguson is your man. NBC late night has gone to the dogs. David Letterman is just a bad caricature of what/who he once was, but Craig Ferguson is hysterical EVERY night and he does it WITHOUT cue cards. It’s spontaneous, funny and entertaining and he LOVES the gays.

Who said they were offended? I don’t see anywhere in the post or the comments where someone said they were remotely offended – just that it was bad humor. People said it was “tired,” “unfunny” and “lame,” but nowhere does someone say it was offensive – in fact, many people said it wasn’t.
Please tell me, who said it was offensive?

OK, Cyd, let’s work with the fact that the second post says that he’s NOT offended and that other people agreed him.
Now, step back and tell us in a calm tone why we would be interested in gay-themed humor that just happens not to be funny. It appears that’s why people are confused. If it’s not offensive but merely not funny, why would it be worth the bandwidth to make any comment at all?
PS I agree with Jimbo on who’s humorous in the wee hours. Ferguson makes a lot of gay jokes. Some fall flat but many are extremely amusing and some rate out-loud guffaws.

Oops. Agreed “with” him.

Um, we’re a gay-sports site. One of our freelancers wrote me last night and mentioned it so I wrote about it. Why would I NOT write about it? For some reason, whenever we write something people accuse us of being offended – but if you read this blog and site you know I’m often the one saying, “Meh, get over it.” There are lots of reasons we write about things including just letting our audience know about it – it’s not always because we’re offended.

Hey I think it’s cool that he mentioned the Gay Games going to Cleveland in 2014 even if he did it with unfunny jokes. The jokes weren’t offensive (as we all agree) and we’ve seen plenty of “leap frog,” “pole vault,” and lesbian softball bad jokes about the Gay Games in the past. But then again I’m a marketing guy

I think it is sour grapes – since he’s from Boston, he was just mad that Boston got beat out by Cleveland!

sheesh someone is uptight lately! go do some cruisin on craiglist cyd for all our sakes!

if you don’t think he’s funny, why watch or even bother giving him any press at all like you just did?
you say his joke was out-of-touch, well to tell you the truth the joke was doomed from the start anyways because i doubt the general public even cares about the gay games so i’m actually impressed he would even attempt a joke about them!
so whether it was funny or not there’s at least one more person out there who knows about the games now then before
oh and I don’t know if your joke at the end was supposed to be funny or not, but it wasn’t, not even close! matter of fact I now wonder if you just got fired from his writing staff and are just bitter and that’s why you decided to post this LOL

I like a good gay joke every now and then, but at least make it funny!!!

I heard Brady Quinn is one of the writers for Fallon.

I find it really interesting that so many people attack the writers of this website and still read it.
In my honest opinion, I’m grateful that someone even has an outlet for gay sports enthusiasts to read anything and everything related to gay sports!
So thanks for the posts Cyd!

I agree with Phantom.
It seems like so many bitter/queeny readers live for the opportunity to bash Cyd, Jim or the other contributing writers.
Keep up the GREAT work Cyd! If it wasn’t for your work I’m afraid a lot of these folks wouldn’t have anyone to talk to or anything to do in life!
Your website is an incredibly powerful resource for so many athletic gays who like me didn’t know there were others out there like us!

I’d also like to thank Jim and Cyd for creating Outsports. It is a truly wonderful site for us sports-minded gay people.
Having said that, I see nothing wrong with a little verbal sparring back and forth in the comments section to Jim and Cyd’s posts. In fact it’s a plus for the website that readers are allowed to participate and create dialogue in the comments section to the posts.
To the writers it may seem like people are attacking them, but that’s missing the more important point that readers are getting involved and Outsports is actually creating a sense of community by allowing everyone to participate and voice a dissenting opinion.
In fact, it’d get pretty boring very quickly if all reader comments agreed wtih everything written on the site.
In any event, thanks again Jim and Cyd for giving Outsports to all of us.

When gay jokes are that old it might be a good sign.
I prefer Stephen Colbert’s mock conservatism as a way of diminishing the homophobia.
You just know his faux right winger is closeted. And he has a great time with it
Doesn’t hurt that he has the best writers in the business – to me.
on Oct 6th, 2009 at 12:11 AM
THAT’S OFFENSIVE!!!
not really…i just thought it would be funny right about now.
on Oct 9th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
I’ve seen his show. It’s not very funny, can’t see it lasting as long as it has, the network probably has some loyalty to him from the snl days. He looks uncomfortable up there doing his monologue and even worse conducting interviews.
