Drag performer sings anthem at SF Giants game

The Twitter feed for the Queers United blog (“the activist blog uniting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexual, Asexual community & Allies in the fight for equality”) had a link to this blog post from Joe.My.God. Donna Sachet, described on the blog as a “San Francisco drag legend,” sang the national anthem before a San Francisco Giants game last week at AT&T Park. The post states that she is the first drag performer to sing the anthem at a major league baseball game. That may be true; I don’t know of any others. Unfortunately, she didn’t sing it very well. I know it’s not an easy song to sing, but…well, take a look (after the jump):

At the very end there’s an edit in the video. I wondered if there was a negative reaction from the crowd at the end, but I found another clip, which showed that no booing occurred.

Would it be cool if the if the then-closeted baritone Clay Aikens who made that song a heart-rending country ballad at the opening of a hockey game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKi7BHtUKLM and the openly gay Adam Lambert who made the song a lilting pop-rock ballad at a military base http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWIGkbuz2g8 could sing it as a duet at the National Equality March http://outsports.com/jocktalkblog/2009/10/06/gay-bowl-9-and-march-this-weekend-in-dc/ ?

Hi All…Geesh, Joe. I thought she did just fine! I’d be pretty nervous too if I was the first person to do something in MLB history. She has done her community proud. Of course she’s least likely to be booed in SF. Those in the crowd who might be apt to boo might have just thought she was some older movie or soap opera (she does look like Miss Eileen Fulton from ATWT) actress that was making an appearance without even realizing she was a drag performer.
