This might be the most excruciating way to possibly lose a football game. I can’t think of a worse one I’ve ever seen, though the commentators said something about an Iowa-Northern Iowa game. To make the play of the year and then to forget one crucial detail…I feel so bad for the white team and so thrilled for the red team. Video after the jump.

Thats freakin awesome and I do agree…sucks for the white team, but GO RED!!!! If you don’t hear a whistle, the play isn’t over. Thats great recognition by the coach of the Red team.

You learn this in pee wee football. Don’t stop playing until the whistle blows.

White team got screwed two different ways on that play. First off, the holder grabs the blocked ball with his knee on the ground. So he’s already down and the play should be over.
Second, the blocked kick rule is flawed. Does the following rule make any sense? When the defending team only partially deflects the kicked ball and it lands over the line of scrimmage the kicking team cannot advance the ball. But if the defending team actually gets a better block on the kick and knocks it backward, the kicking team can advance the ball (as we see in the video).
The rule actually puts the defending team at a disadvantage when they make a better block of the kick. Makes no sense at all.

I like the rule, but agree with Mike’s comment about the knee being down. Fact of the matter is, even the officials didn’t know what was going on while it was.
And in comment to Cyd’s comment… The Iowa – Northern Iowa reference… it was the first game this season, Northern Iowa (my alma mater) is an FCS team and had a chance to win the game with a GW field goal. They kicked on 3rd down, blocked, ball didn’t cross the line, so it was now fourth down and they kicked again. Sadly it was blocked again!
Gotta love football!

Was Wade Phillips the White special teams coach?
