The new ultimate extreme sport: Flying

For those looking for the ultimate rush of extreme sports, your adventure awaits on the edge of a cliff. Wingsuit base jumping (or wingsuit flying) puts you in the roll of flying squirrel, gliding through thousands of feet of altitude with no engine. While people have been attempting to build suits like this for decades, it’s been only in the last 10 years that someone has (nearly) perfected it and made it safe (rather, as safe as you can make falling thousands of feet).

I have no interest in skydiving or bungee jumping, but this does have my attention. It may be the closest simulation to flying we see in my lifetime. Maybe. Video after the jump.

“Video after the jump.” If you’re lucky.

Reminds me of when I took a leap across a dead man’s jump in the mountains of the Dominican Republic with this crazy (but hunky) Peace Corps volunteer from the northwest US.

I only did it to make a point, immediately jumped back before I lost my nerve and got trapped on the other precipice with no other way down going forward. I’ve had my thrill and then some.

I’ll stick with scuba diving, thank you.
