Why does Manny get to be Manny?

Lots of talk today about Manny Ramirez being in the showers as his Dodgers lost to the Phillies. Some are chastising him for leaving his teammates as they fought on the field. Some (including manager Joe Torre!) are dismissing it as “Manny being Manny.”

Is everyone else as tired of that line as I am? “Manny being Manny” means he’s being a raging jackass. It means he’s not caring about his team, his teammates or how he behaves on the field. We don’t let Terrell Owens off the hook when he’s his self-absorbed self; We don’t let Brett Favre off the hook (anymore) when he’s doing the same thing. Why does Manny seem to get a pass for “being Manny”? When Dodgers fans are watching the World Series being played in Philadelphia, maybe he won’t anymore.

I doubt many Dodger fans will watch the World Series if the Phillies are in it. The ratings for the NLCS show that Philly has twice the rating as does LA, and Philly (with much fewer people) has more people watching than LA.

I guarantee that LA fans will tune out baseball the second the Dodgers are eliminated (the same holds for Angel fans vs. the Yankees). Baseball has become a regional sport with little national imprint, and once a market’s team is gone, so are the viewers from that market.

Manny’s behavior is an interesting contrast to the jubilation & spirit the Phillies showed when turtling on J-Roll after his double on Monday night.

He’s a selfish player who gets away with this because none of his superiors have stood up to him about it.

I think he “gets away with it” (meaning avoids the media and public backlash) because we don’t actually see him or hear him do or say that much. For example, what specific “Manny being Manny” moment is emblazened in the public’s consciousness?

There are a lot of stories and behind the scenes events that get reported and then are almost immediately forgotten because the public doesn’t have any sound bites or video to hang onto.

I can’t think of any specific Manny moment captured on tape like Terrel Owens crying about his love (or hate) for his QBs at press conferences, doing situps shirtless in his driveway, doing pom-pom or pop corn TD celebrations, etc.

Most people in L.A. are waiting to resume their obsession with the Lakers. It’s not as much with Angels fans as with Dodgers fans, but there is significant overlap there as well.

I think people know what they’re getting with T.O. just like they know what they’re getting with Manny. He was “being Manny” in Boston and they got rid of him.
