Outsports on ESPN Thursday

I am scheduled to appear on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” program Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern. The subject is gays in sports in conjunction with October being gay and lesbian history month. Former lacrosse player Andrew Goldstein is also scheduled to appear. I am not sure what their angle is yet.

I watched it & it was pretty cool, though Jim wasn’t on it. The host raised some good questions; the answers were kinda glib, but it was still a good (& unfortunately continuously necessary) look at the issue of ‘phobia in sports.

I got bumped in favor of Esera.

Jim, you should have been picked instead of Esera- regardless of his status as a gay former professional athlete. Reason being is that Esera sounded completely ignorant- he kept saying “and stuff” and he repeated the same points over and over and over. I actually had to fast forward through some of what he was saying because it was that painful to listen to him speak.

I guess it’s too much to ask for an openly gay professional athlete who can also speak in an intelligent manner.

Esera didn’t seem too thrilled to be there and didn’t seem to have it completely together. he seemed more upset at not being asked to come on to speak about non-gay topics then to take on LJ. the cute gay kid was much better and not as self-absorbed as esera came off.

Esera seemed to show some evidence that he may have been hit in the head a few times throughout his career. Goldstein, on the other hand, was a Dartmouth graduate, so one should expect him to be a bit more well-spoken.

Enough with the Esera bashing. He’s a sweetie and he’s wonderfully talented and intelligent, (although the T-shirt attire coulda used a second opinion… just sayin’ )

Jim is brilliant and runs an amazing gay sports website, but Esera has been in the trenches and in the locker room. That perspective makes a ton of sense to people who still think gay is a choice.

On a completely separate subject. Jim…when you coming to Gym:LA?
