The Windy City Times is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are the first team with an openly gay owner. The team was purchased for a reported $845 million by the Ricketts family.
Among the purchasers is Laura Ricketts, a lesbian who now becomes the first out individual to own a professional sports team, according to MarketToMarketLLC.com. According to ABC7Chicago.com, Laura, who lives in Chicago, is a member of the board of Lambda Legal, a national organization fighting for gay rights-including same sex marriage.
The claim isn’t quite accurate. The Boston Celtics were publicly traded for quite some time, and it’s impossible to believe that none of the stock holders were openly gay. Hell, the Tribune Company was publicly traded when it owned the Cubs, so the Cubs themselves have had openly gay owners. Still, Laura is likely the biggest openly gay owner of a pro sports team.

Whatever happened to that rumored-to-be-gay “bachelor” who owned the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Kevin McClatchy is no longer principal owner of the Pirates. He has yet to be my gay boyfriend, but you never know. I’ll keep the children updated.

This just in… hot dogs and bratwurst will no longer be available at Cubs games, you now have your choice of tuna, and tacos, and fish tacos, to enjoy the best of both worlds!

Well now at least one part of the Cubs organization will actually have some balls.
