Second gay sports bar headed for Chelsea

Some people treat sports like a religion. Soon, New York sports fans may get to watch football next to a house of worship. Next to the church at 20th St. & Sixth Ave., where the debauchery of Limelight once ruled the roost, a location will soon house Chelsea’s second gay sports bar, Boxers NYC.

This isn’t a big surprise. With the success of Gym Sportsbar on Eighth Ave., a second bar was sure to pop up. And with the dozens of gay-sports leagues representing thousands of members, and many more sports fans beyond that in Manhattan, we know both can succeed. Boxers will look and feel different from Gym; The former will have food, and the floor plan (check it out after the jump) features a “brick oven pizza station.” Stay tuned!

Note: Post edited Dec. 15 for location accuracy; I misread the location the first time.

I went to a sports bar in the Castro in San Francisco. It was much more relaxing than just about every gay bar I’ve been to. The only one that came close was in Vegas. I don’t know if it had sports on TV, but it had video poker, and you kind of get the same vibe. There is a gay bar with pool tables and some sports in New Orleans, but it’s more of a sports-themed gay bar than a sports bar for gay people.

Maybe, just maybe this will be an ACTUAL gay sports bar in NYC, since GYM is bullshit. The time I was there they put the game on, had Madonna playing or that ilk and label it a sports bar?

Crew in Chicago is by far the only gay Sports bar I’ve ever visited.

Why the preceived need for “gay sports bars?”

Last week I watched Monday Night Football in a sports bar. When it got boring I asked them to switch one of the big screens to LOGO. No problem.

Friday in a sports bar they changed a big screen to Bravo HD for the Brokeback Mountain Marathon, upon my requested.

Sure, a few guys wondered what was going on when the scenes featuring the cowboys bathing nude in the river rolled. I told them I thought it might be a commercial for the new Axe Body Wash.

When the big break-up scene came on I informed a big guy it was an emotionally difficult moment. I asked if he would hold me. He held my hand, fingers intertwined, on top the bar, and put his left arm around my shoulders.

This all happened in rural Tennessee. So why the demand for an allegedly gay sports bar in New York City?

Dude re-read the article again please. It says the bar location is next to the old limelight and the photo clearly shows #37 as being next door.

The limelight space is currently being converted into high end retail shops, a mall of sorts.

Thanks for the catch, Derek. Next time though, feel free to make yourself feel better with your bitch attitude elsewhere.

I agree with Mike. I went to GYM one time after it opened.

I had to beg the bartender to change the channel from female beach volley ball and cheerleading to a baseball game.

    Haven’t been back since.
