Latest ‘when will NFL get gay player’ column

Every six months or so, someone in the mainstream media decides to write the latest “When will we see an active out player in the [insert pro sports league here]” column. This month it’s Dan Solomon on AOL’s Asylum. It contains pretty much everything you’ve read here a dozen times: It’ll be someone who’s outed or a kid rising up the ranks in college; A good player would have it easier; He’ll be met with some locker room issues….

It’s great that the issue keeps getting raised in mainstream publications; And the best reason to read this article is for the reader comments. My fave was by Solomon himself:

But if we’re using Leviticus to judge whether or not we’ve got a truly holy league, then only players with righteous neckbeards are likely to pass muster — the book also says, “Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.” Either every player except for Kyle Orton is damned, or we can take Leviticus with a grain of salt.

When is Outsaports going to post the story about Atlanta Falcons fullback Ovie Mughelli? The story broke on MissJia.com (as you know), and has been covered by Queerty.com. Deadspin.com ran the story stating “The boys over at Outsports have inquired about the story as well, but won’t run with it unless the unnamed man steps forward” Well, he has stepped forward with a video interview at Miss Jia as well as photos of multiple reciepts, signatures, etc… It’s not like you would be outing someone – you would be reporting on a circulating story. Deadspin noted that Syd spoke to Ovie’s publicist who directed him to attorneys. Could it be that Syd wants to position Outsports as a legitimate gay sports outlet thus not being blackballed by the sports industry as a gossip column?

Who or what is “Miss Jia”? Is there any reason to believe it could be remotely legit? I mean, if I wrote up some story about a gay athlete on my blog should it be automtically covered by Outsports and other sites? Or should there be some fact-checking first, to make sure I’m not just making it up?

The video of “Ovie’s ex-lover stepping forward” is also on YouTube, as of Jan12, 8:40p.m..

I wonder why Deadspin hasn’t posted an update that Ovie’s accuser is now on video? It’s as though the more “legitimate” this story gets, the more that Deadspin (and Outsports) is backing off.

Again I have to ask what makes it “legitimate”? I could make a video and post it to YouTube and lie through my teeth.

Oh, sorry for not providing handwriting analysis on the documents available on above mentioned website Joe. Maybe this so called jilted lover is a fake after all and may be the most creative stalker of all time. Or maybe he is crazy as hell and looking to be completely ruined by a law suit just for the hell of it. My mistake was assuming that maybe this story was “remotely legit” based on the below listed evidence provided by the fake lover on MissJia.com:
    1. 2 sexy pics of Ovie
    2. Hertz receipt showing Ovie’s name and assumed signature plus last four digits of a credit card number.
    3. Baltimore hotel receipt paid with same credit card number, dated when Ovie played ball for the Ravens.
    4. Ravens ticket stubs (same date as hotel receipt) with Mughelli’s name.
    5. Priority mail label from Ovie in MD to F.S. (name and addresses blacked out).
I’ll wait for the handwriting analysis of the label and if legit an explanation as to why Ovie was mailing something to F.S. also the proof that this man was actually the guest who was treated to paid rental car, hotel room and 2 V.I.P. tickets to the game before I rely on my gut feeling and believe a crackpot again…. my bad.

Hello…? Joe? Where’s your witty rebuttal?
Oh , by the way, granted you probably don’t follow MissJia.com because it is an African-American gossip website but does that make the site less valid than Outsports? I would NEVER assume that you or Outsports is slightly racist, I’m only accusing you of having no balls. hehe

Joe: “Miss Jia” is just a bullshit gossip columnist. And you called it right–there’s no reason to believe it. The guy behind the story is on a revenge trip for who know’s what but the gay took this “outing” like it was gospel and made fools of themselves. Ovie isn’t gay. Miss Jia has zero credibility. Here’s someone who does discussing it intelligently: http://thecliffordmethod.blogspot.com/2010/01/tag-youre-fag.html

Of course MissJia is a gossip column. And thecliffordmethod.blogspot is a bullshit homophobe whom we should read? Ha. Yet no one has addressed the glaring evidence of at least a connection with the player… Maybe the guy with a revenge trip found the goodies in the trash.
