Tennis great Martina Navratilova has a noninvasive form of breast cancer and will undergo radiation treatments. She called the diagnosis her “personal 9/11.” Reports the New York Times:
The early form of cancer for which Navratilova is being treated is known as D.C.I.S., or ductal carcinoma in situ. It is not a tumor and is not even classified as cancer by some organizations but is a collection of cancer cells in the milk ducts of the breast that has yet to spread to other tissues.
D.C.I.S. is less dangerous than invasive breast cancer, and some D.C.I.S. lesions remain harmless throughout a woman’s life. … “I call this my personal 9/11 because I realized my life would never be the same,” she said.
Navratilova, 53, called the experience frightening and she has undergone a lumpectomy. She came forward with her diagnosis to remind women to undergo routine breast cancer screening.
In addition to being one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Navratilova is a hero to gays and lesbians everywhere for being out and proud, even while competing. We all wish her good health and a long life.

I wrote to Ms. Navratilova about three years ago asking for her autograph. The tennis legend was kind in responding back, signing both of my index cards. I am writing to wish her love, and all the very best during this trying period in her life. She has my full support.
With sincerity,
