Hockey Kid Mikey: Anatomy of a deception

Mikey, the teenage hockey blogger from Minnesota, seems beyond a reasonable doubt a late-fortysomething man from a Minneapolis suburb who likes travel, food, was married and has sex profiles on two gay hookup sites. His deceit was discovered when he fell in love with Jimmy, a contributor to his blog, and his story started to unravel.

Mikey (which is how this person will be mentioned during the article) maintained in three e-mails to me that he is in fact a teenage hockey player, who panicked and then claimed he was 40 so he could disappear. His last reply to me was April 30 when he said he would prove he was real. But he never answered two subsequent e-mails in which he was asked about inconsistencies in his story. (The e-mails he sent are at the end of this article.)

While Outsports has a name and details, including three connected e-mail addresses; a phone number; a resume; minutes from a condominium homeowners association meeting; postings on travel, food and Minnesota high school hockey sites; and a social networking profile, we will not print the name short of this person giving an on-the-record admission. There has been no evidence that Mikey committed any crime and no underage reader of his blog has stepped forward to claim they were propositioned.

Mikey’s blog, “A Gay Hockey Kid’s Life,” gained prominence in December after it was featured in an Outsports blog post I wrote. The following disclaimer ran with the item: “I do not know Mikey’s identity but have corresponded with him enough to believe he is who he says he is. I have read all his entries and nothing about his blog seems fantastical. But, as always, every reader needs to make up his own mind.”

After this blog item ran, traffic on Mikey’s blog increased dramatically and his site became a robust meeting place for many young people who saw a kindred spirit. Mikey did one interview for an online Podcast and was set to do a radio interview in Toronto when the blog was shut down April 24 and he dropped out of sight.

Mikey was tripped up by his private e-mails and chats with people he met via the blog. His blog remained remarkably consistent, and he likely could have kept writing it indefinitely. However, he developed a close online relationship with Jimmy, a 23-year-old Canadian. It was through this that Mikey’s story started to unravel. Mikey admitted to Jimmy and then to the owners of the server that hosted his blog that he was a fake and was an older man. The server owners then shut down the blog.

Mikey’s blog even started out with a lie. He told me in a December e-mail that his blog profile photo, showing a player in a hockey jersey getting ready for a face-off, was him from a tryout with a U.S. development team. In fact, it was a player who was with the University of Minnesota hockey team at the time. When asked about this in April, Mikey e-mailed me that he was always vague about whom the picture was of. In fact, in December he wrote me: “the jersey is from a usa hockey showcase that ive played in twice so thats the usa thing.” He also wrote this on Formspring.com in reply to a question about the picture: “The hockey image on the right [of his blog] is me.”

Mikey was always careful on his blog to keep his story straight. He had e-mailed to the computer server a copy of the school calendar for a school district in suburban Minnesota, along with a copy of the practice and game schedule for a high school baseball team’s 2010 season (Mikey had made references on his blog to his friend Josh being on the baseball team). Such information could have allowed him to write about events without getting caught in a discrepancy.

He also allegedly copied the personas of two real Minnesota-area high school hockey players. There were  12 pictures of one player, and one allegedly of the player’s brother, on his blog server. He used both names in deceiving Jimmy. After Jimmy caught him in a lie, he asked him, “Who are those kids to you?” Mikey replied: “kids like me when I was there [sic] age.” Other readers of Mikey’s blog have come forward with names they discovered when researching high school hockey players in Minnesota with similar backgrounds to Mikey.

Jimmy started to unravel Mikey’s deceit in April after he caught him lying about an out-of-town award Mikey said he had won. Jimmy had wanted to tell his mother about the award. After much prodding, Mikey admitted to Jimmy that he had lied.

The final post on Mikey's blog. Click to enlarge.

On April 24, Jimmy posted a message on the blog (click on photo right) saying, Mikey was a “40-something dude who lives in Minnesota.” Mikey had first told Jimmy he was 28, then 38. At one point during his admission, via chat, the person who blogged for months about being a high school student told Jimmy that he had to leave to give a presentation at a meeting.

After the blog was closed, Jimmy e-mailed me details of how he discovered Mikey was lying:

“Over the past couple of months we’ve become very, very close. He of course needed an identity. He gave me a name, etc. I busted him on that name after bout three weeks. He gave a sob story bout how scared he was n panicked then told me the ‘truth’. He was this dude’s teammate. So on this went until he was selected to go to DC. I was talking to my mom n she wanted me to send me somethin bout the trip cause it was quite the honour for the kid…

“When I tried looking and found nothing I emailed him askin for something I could send my mom. He was sorta vague but he said he’d send me somethin right away but had to go to a banquet. So while I was waiting, I thought I’d check to see if they’d posted anything new on his baseball team’s site so I could update my parents on that as well. It was then that I discovered Mikey had hit a homer in his game on Saturday, at about the same time I was chatting with him from DC.

“So then I was pissed. I then went to Facebook and requested friending mikey … the real kid and not even knowing who I was he friended me, which allowed me access to a whole different world from the one mikey had led me to believe. Upon further checking with the help of Brian from his site hosting company, we found out who [he] was – and he ain’t no kid (which I was still hoping), he was some 48 year old ****wad who may or may not be the uncle? cousin? of the kid I thought was mikey… so yea, there ya have it. He’s an asshole for what he did. Not to me but to every kid out there.”

The information about Mikey was obtained from many sources. Foremost among them was JD Thomas, one of the server owners. JD and his partner Brian had donated server space to Mikey so he could move his blog from Blogger and have a more polished look. JD’s background includes network and computer-based forensic research and investigation. He found many documents and e-mails Mikey had kept on the donated mail and webhosting space. I also heard from more than a dozen people who provided me with tips, photos, e-mails, transcripts of chats and insights into Mikey.

I have based my judgments that information:

Mikey’s location

All of Mikey’s blog posts were sent from IP addresses in and around Plymouth, Minn., a Minneapolis suburb, according to server records. (All of Jimmy’s posts and blog comments came from IP addresses in Manitoba Canada, where he says he is from).

Mikey’s personas

Mikey has three connected e-mail addresses. All have user names that include a word associated with hockey, plus the number 21. When I asked Mikey about those addresses, he wrote in an e-mail that two of them belonged to his godfather: “our emauil addys r similar cause growin up he was sorta my hockey idol n his fav player was brian bonnin who played at the u won the hobby baker n played in the pros a lil bit.  his email addys got the 21 from brian playin at the u n i coppied that when i set up my real email addy n it was the number i always wanted to be when i played.”

Yet, one of those same user names is also connected to sex profiles on Manhunt (belonging to a 6-foot, 34-year-old from Minneapolis) and another sex site (belonging to a “hung” 6-foot, 195-pound 30-year-old from Plymouth, Minn). The Manhunt ad contains no text, while the ad on the other site says: “I’m a pretty normal guy into sports, travel, cooking, music, movies, outdoors stuff. I play hockey a lot and love the sport. Looking for masculine jock types for fun.” Both profiles have the same photo – a tight crop of a man holding his erect penis.

Another of the user names is used in a resume Mikey e-mailed himself. It is also tied to a Linkedin profile, describing a man from the Greater Minneapolis area who graduated college in 1984, and later received his law degree. Based on the normal timeline for someone going to college, a person graduating in 1984 would be around 48 years old.

Personal details

In addition to the resume and sex ads, one of the user names is found posting in online travel and food sites.

–A person with this user name is married (or was at least in 2005). On a travel forum where he posted extensively about his trips, he wrote favorably about coming back from his honeymoon in Thailand in 2005.

–A person with this user name likes food and posted on a food forum. On his blog, Mikey regularly wrote about food, so much that it became a running gag with his commenters.

Jonathan, an avid reader of Mikey’s blog, compared the tone on the travel and food forums with that of the blog:

“If you read through the various things he posted, he sounds a lot like Mikey. He talks about food constantly, and writes in a sort of passionate focused manner.  He also writes short sentences that string together into lists.  If you read through a bunch of them, you can sort of hear Mikey’s voice coming through.”

– A person with this user name loves hockey. He has posted on various hockey websites, including that of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, and is a member of a high school hockey forum in a vacation area of Minnesota, where he apparently has a vacation home.

Mikey’s phone number

One of Mikey’s user names is tied to a phone number with a Minneapolis prefix. It is the number he used to do a January podcast with the website “Ben & Dave’s Six Pack.” The same number is also tied into the resume and to a report from a Plymouth, Minn., homeowners association; the person with that phone number was elected to a two-year term of the board in 2006.

When he gave the phone number to Ben and Dave prior to the podcast, he said he normally did not give it out because his father goes over the bill.  Mike told them to say they worked for a college or something if his dad picked up.  Dave Rubin wrote me: “We called him on an actual number, that he made me promise we would never call back because he said his father checks his phone.”

However, when I asked Mikey about the phone number in April, he wrote: “my godfather n who had nothin to do wit this other than givin me n my bros cell phones for our bdays n payin for them.” In a previous e-mail, he wrote: “my godfather whos only role in this was givin me n my bros cell phone service.”

If his godfather is paying for the service, why would Mikey tell Ben and Dave that “my dad goes over the bill”? And since the phone number goes back to at least 2006, it would be odd for someone to gift Mikey with an existing phone number. After the blog was closed, I called the number and left a message (it was an automated voice greeting) but never got a return call.

The Podcast

Mikey’s Podcast with “Ben & Dave’s Six Pack”  was the only voice interview he did (he allegedly turned down an interview request with Minnesota Public Radio, and never followed up on a request by a Toronto station). After Mikey’s blog was shut down, I asked Rubin what he thought about the Podcast:

“I actually fully bought it after we spoke.  I told Ben that you could hear the nervousness and although his voice was very deep sometimes that’s just a puberty thing. Ben was a little more skeptical, as were some of our listeners.”

I have listened to the podcast four times and I find it impossible to determine roughly how old the speaker is. Some readers are convinced it’s an older person, while others are convinced he’s a teenager. Web searches find software available to alter one’s voice when using a computer-based phone service or a cellphone, though there is no evidence this occurred in this case.

Other inconsistencies

Two other people – Danny and Tyler – had Mikey admit that pictures he e-mailed them were of someone else. Both incidents occurred in December.

Tyler, who described himself as a 16-year-old into motocross, had a blog “I’ll Do Tricks for You.” In one post, he described that Mikey sent him photos that Tyler had seen on other sites, and when he confronted Mikey, he admitted they weren’t of him. Tyler’s blog disappeared shortly after Mikey’s blog shut down and he did not respond at an e-mail I sent requesting more information on the photos.

Danny sent me copies of extensive chat sessions he had with Mikey around Christmas. Danny was sent a photo that showed what looked like an obvious teenager in a blue baseball cap and Kansas City Chiefs T-shirt. Danny found this pic and two nude photos of the same person on a gay porn blog and confronted Mikey on it. After dodging numerous questions, Mikey admitted the photos were not of him.

“Yea the pic looks enough like me that a buddy thought it was n sent it to me,” was Mikey’s explanation to Danny. It seems unusual that Mikey’s buddy would recognize a photo from a gay porn site and, thinking it looked like Mikey, send it to him. Mikey consistently wrote on his blog that only two people (his younger brother and straight friend) knew he was gay, and that he was paranoid about being outed. So how did he happen to have a buddy who frequented gay porn sites?

Mikey also used the photo he sent to Danny for his profile picture on a gay youth website.

Hoax of a hoax?

In comments on Outsports’ blog and in some e-mails, there are still some people who think Mikey is 18, but created the persona of a fortysomething so he could disappear and go to college unnoticed. I don’t buy it.

The Mikey who blogged was ultra concerned about the teens who read his posts; he wrote with compassion and caring and offered good advice and support. He said he kept the blog going because of numerous e-mails from other teenagers, including athletes, who were inspired by what he wrote. It would be inconceivable such a person would concoct a fake persona to disappear, knowing the pain it would cause these people (some of whom said they contemplated suicide before discovering Mikey’s blog).

If Mikey was real and wanted to disappear, he could have quit the blog in a cleaner way, saying that he was graduating and needed to focus on college. Once the blog was closed, I gave Mikey the opportunity to reveal his true identity to me, promising that I would protect his anonymity while letting everyone know he was real. He never responded to that offer, though it remains open.

This is how Jimmy put it in an e-mail to me:

“Unfortunately, this isn’t some master plan for Mikey to go hide in college and make the pros. It’s just some dude who had an idea, his idea grew — then exploded and now has blown up.”

Short of an on-the-record admission of responsibility, we’ll never know with 100% certainly who the blogger is and what his motivation was. But using the legal standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt,” my verdict is that Mikey was not a high school hockey player. What do you think?

Addendum

Here are the last three e-mails I received from Mikey after I asked him to come clean. He never replied to two others requesting more information:

April 26:

So confusing, not just why and all that but there’s A LOT of information going on – really hard to keep track. (I guess so much so that the liar couldn’t do it himself.) And it’s all so sad… again – why!? While there’s no money is lost (and no crime, that know of, have been committed) – but this is still a fraud – when our time and emotions have been robbed..

What worries me the most is those young confused athletes, who reached out to share their struggle with Mikey. Having been conned – they might never be willing to open up to anyone again. This frankly sets up a huge step backwards for sexual equality in sports! I wonder if there’s any safe space online (on OutSports or another website) that allows young athletes to anonymously discuss or seek some (peer) support? Jim, Cyd – any suggestions for that?

Ultimately, I’m glad Jim followed up on this – this article feels like a good closure… I hope this is the last time we will read about Hockey Kid Mikey – For me, it’s really time to look forward.

p.s. – I guess if people are still reeling from the fallout of this hoax, they might want to borrow some advice from this 12 step guide to handle the aftermath of a Fraud… (Not to that extreme – but advice still applies!) http://www.fraudaid.com/How-To-Deal-With-Having-Been-Conned/How-To-Handle-the-Aftermath.htm

Thank you Jim for your time and effort to try to sort this mess out. From the details you have provided this fraud goes well beyond a blog about hockey and while there has been no evidence that this person solicited underage boys, he certainly displayed all of the classic signs of a predator building trust with potential victims, multiple identities, etc. While Jimmy was hurt very personally by this, we all owe him our gratitude for ending this hoax before anyone was seriously hurt.

Momma always said “Don’t talk to strangers”. A warning young people AND adults would do well to heed.

Wow that is A LOT of information. I really couldnt even read all that just yet. I’m still dont know what to believe. One thing I get throughout is “Mikey” lied about so many things. personally I dont blame him for lying about pictures. I think sending your real picture to strangers if you are a closet case is a bad idea. But I dont think lying about pictures, godfathers and hockey games automatically means he’s 40. Yes this person is clearly a liar but who knows what they lied about and what is true. That’s the problem with liars. You dont know what to trust or believe.

But still all of Jimmy’s “explanations” and other comments make no sense and are undeniably sketchy, vague, and nonsensical. So Ive resigned to the fact that there will be no satisfactory resolution. It’s like the finale of Lost.

after reading all that the only mystery now is how he fooled so many people in the first place. why didn’t anyone do some research once they had those user names? why would a terrified-to-be-discovered closeted kid give a podcast interview where he reveals his voice? how would a kid that age know so much about hockey history and dining if he hadn’t had years of experience following/doing each of those?

then he busts out with the i’m-having panic-attacks i’m-going to-the emergency-room and he was forced to come out to his mom and godfather? i mean, huh? if this was all true wouldn’t the mother or godfather have taken steps to protect this kid? i mean 1 lie became 2, then 3 then 4 then 5…..

If all this evidence doesn’t convince people he was a fake then nothing will, except for the name of the culprit himself, of course, which I wish Outsports would release but understand the legal reasons for not doing so.

the most important lesson everyone should learn from all this is that no “closeted jock” blog is to be trusted and that they have no place being pimped by gay media sites….

First off, good job by OutSports in the extensive research and article.

    Now, onto a few things:

This man CONTINUES to either lie to you or duck and dodge his promises to you about revealing his “true” identity. So since he keeps dodging you, WHY don’t you reveal his real name?? He deserves zero respect after this and the way hes handled the aftermath.

Also, Jimmy has gone into absolute disappearance. It’s extremely sketchy. While I’m more convinced that this man is a grown-adult, I still don’t know for sure. I just want this human being fully exposed for his lies.

Oh, and isn’t it identity theft to send someone pictures of someone else and claim they’re you?? Anybody involved in law on the blog that can educate us on the laws surrounding identity theft or fraud??

Kay, so Jimmy is busy with work, so stop being suspicious of his absence.

Thank you Jim for the professional way in which you handled this, and for not revealing the name.

  9. #9 DruggyBear
    on May 20th, 2010 at 10:29 PM

    @Madeleine

oh ok so Jimmy is busy with work, but somehow he found the time to prey on who he thought was a 17 y.o. high school kid. hmmm.

and then you get the back of another predator, the real “Mikey”… whoever he is. Why are you thanking Jim for protecting this scumbag?

“Mikey” is not the only shifty character in this tale. You and Jimmy are hardly the victims you portrayed yourselves out to be, why you two don’t come clean about everything just raises more questions….

    @DruggyBear

I do know that Maddy is real, she has a real facebook and shes been on webcam.

I agree with you on everything else though. Outsports needs to reveal this guys name to send a message to this creep to stay in his cave and also to all future creeps. The shock and humiliation value will serve the same type of purpose that “To Catch a Predator” does. If the fear of public humiliation stops one future creep from preying on the emotions of vulnerable teenagers, then revealing the name would be worth it.

    on May 20th, 2010 at 10:47 PM

You know what Druggy Bear, fuck you.

Jimmy goes to school most of the year; it’s called a SUMMER job.

And stop accusing me of being a shady character, I am a victim in this like anyone else.

I don’t think it is Jim’s place to reveal the name, and I’m glad he didn’t just to make people happy.

  13. #13 Madeleine
    on May 20th, 2010 at 10:50 PM

and it has already been explained that Jimmy believed Mikey was 18, which isn’t that far from 23, he didn’t prey on him. And I thinnk someone said age of consent in minnesota is 17.

  14. #14 Chad
    on May 20th, 2010 at 11:00 PM

Madeleine, it’s not about making anybody “happy.” Its about sending a message to “Mikey” and all future creeps that think about doing the same thing. Fear of public humiliation is often a great deterrent (see: “To Catch a Predator”).

I just don’t believe it sends a message that will be recieved, or that those who know his identity have the place to be a messenger. Legally I don’t think that’s a wise move

MADeleine is certainly a fitting name for you, babe. and you are hardly a “victim” just a dumbass who fell for and worshipped a scam artist and attacked everyone who questioned his existence, like I did! Need I remind you I turned out to be right about him and you were dead wrong? I’m pretty sure I’m right about how SHADY you are too, and your surly and defensive demeanor does you no favors girlfriend!

So “Jimmy” left for a “summer job” in which he has no Internet?? And he just HAPPENED to stop using the internet (formspring/commenting on here) just 2 or so days after the Mikey news surfaced?? After all of this, why should we believe that??

    on May 20th, 2010 at 11:24 PM

Druggy Bear, the people who matter to me know I am a good person, so I don’t care at all what you think of me. Oh and good one with the name, as if I haven’t heard that before. Yeah, you were right, hope saying “I told you so” makes you happy. And are you saying everyone else who fell for it was a dumbass? Way to kick people when they are down.

Chad, enough with the conspiracy theories. Why is it hard to believe he has a summer job? And did you ever stop to think that he stopped responding because he was tired of people attacking him?

“And are you saying everyone else who fell for it was a dumbass?”

no, just you. you were the one who acted as his rottweiler and attacked everyone who raised the fair and prescient concerns that this guy was a fake. and you did so without ever knowing if he was a fake or not! but did that stop you? noooooooo.

questioning “jimmy” and his motives are fair as well, but here comes the rottweiler again to bite back at anyone who dare question him. i at least hope you have learned your lesson and know “Jimmy” is who he says he is this time, cuz your credibility is pretty much shot….

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the great thoroughly researched article. This does provide a bit of closure to this situation. I can relate to your reluctance in sharing “Mikey’s” real identity; however, you mention that it’s possible that a 48 year old man in MN who could be the real “Mikey” has a degree in law. If “Mikey” is a practicing legal professional, or a member of the bar, and is conducting himself in this way it would at the least raise serious ethical if not legal concerns. Might you consider forwarding this to the MN bar association at the least?

hmm… somewhere in the comments section – I got even more confused.

Why are people picking on Jimmy – he’s a victim in this, isn’t he? I mean if I was in his position – I’d be completely humiliated… To see people stand on the sideline, jeering and being cruel – This not at all logical to me. It’s shameful really.

And why is Druggybear so mean? Do you have some deep seeded unhappiness that makes you act like a bully? Are you lashing out at other people to get a reaction? Do you feel better calling people names? (I don’t know… you say these things, but to me, you are looking more like a scary cyber person whom the kids should avoid. But that’s just my opinion.)

Bottomline is – attacking victims, that isn’t justice. It’s just cruel and pointless – Doesn’t solve anything and it weakens the community. Without unity, all of us will get the short end of the stick.

Jim, thank you for putting in the time necessary for this post-mortem. It’s all too easy for some (such as Illegal-Substance-Abusing Fat-Ass) to think that you “owe” us this, but since it’s obvious this is not your paying job, let me just say that I recognize and appreciate all your hard work. Madeline, I’m sorry you have had to listen to anyone insult you. The best response when dealing with such people is to ignore rather than engage them, because they are just seeking attention and my best guess is that in real life, they don’t have a life. And anyone who uses a moniker that defines part of their identity through the illegal use of substances should probably be seeking professional help. You’re probably not an awful human being but you definitely have a lot of work to do on yourself. Drugs are not cool, and it’s actually just sad that in many parts of the gay community, people who use them are not socially ostracized but rather embraced. More and more of us may be physically out, but too of us still have a long way to go before becoming truly healthy, integrated, fully-formed people who grow into the best of what we were meant to be.

My last sentence should have read: “More and more of us may be physically out, but too MANY of us still have a long way to go before becoming truly healthy, integrated, fully-formed people who grow into the best of what we were meant to be.”

    Sorry ’bout that!

The lesson here is that on the internet almost no one is who they seem to be – whether it’s personal ads on dating sites or mystery bloggers. It’s the nature of the beast and the anonymity the internet provides that creates a perfect storm for situations like this one where people lie and misrepresent themselves.

It’s a huge mistake to get emotionally involved or attached to an internet “personality” you’ve never met and really don’t/can’t know. Hopefully all the kids who got duped by ‘Mikey’ will learn that lesson without getting hurt too badly.

Thanks for the closure. It will mean alot to many people, some who live in a fantasy world ,not so much. I told myself I was done commenting here, but as Jimmy once said, only the fool in me keeps comming back. And do you know who the fool is? Not Jimmy, he is done with your conspiracy theories and lashing out at others and moved on with his life, but me, here I am. I couldn’t sit back and not respond to the BS against Madeleine, who is one of the most loving, careing, loyal, and respectful people I have ever come across. To think otherwise is ridiculous. And Jimmy, he’s a good guy, enough said. They were caught up in all this because of their love, care and respect for others. You idiots who keep trying to ignore the real truth and come up wioth new conspiracy plans and lash out at others for your own purposes -get a life anf f….. you. Ooops, my key board hooped-fuck you all. Madeleine and Jimmy- all love and respect to you both for all you have done to help others. All the best for you in your lives. To the “idiot commenters” and you know who you are-get lives will ya. To the rest of you dude’s and dudette’s-PEACE.
Oh shit, now they’ll think I’M Jimmy. Bawahahahah!

I gotta laugh at this because seriously who fucking cares about any of it? Well Jim and Cyd do obviously…….

This “kid” could be a 75-year-old, lesbian, one legged, Japanese gardener and it still would not be the least bit interesting or news worthy. Older closeted guy pretends to be a younger guy – WOW serious news indeed.

To waste so much time and energy writing about so something so totally fucking worthless is just pathetic.

Yeah. Maybe it’s the fantasy of maybe hooking up with a hot, masculine athlete that gets all these queens all riled up. I think it’s all fantasy, which in real-life for these guys, is lacking entirely. That’s why these strange blogs are so popular (among older dudes).

I’m glad you’re taking the high road by not releasing “mikey’s” real name, it can only lead to someone doing something stupid and getting into legal trouble.

This tawdry experience affected me deeply…I thought I was connecting to a world of honest, refreshingly candid gay youth.

After reading the OutSports article and the comments, I feel this twisted tale will never be resolved. What stands out to me is the failure of OutSports to apologize for its “endorsement” of this blog. Yes, there was a small caveat emptor notice in its endorsement, but really it was hidden beneath the glowing praise.

I read this blog with optimisim for months. I connected with some really decent people. I read of the struggles very vulnerable youth.

I fear that many people were hurt, to the point that a suicide hotline was placed on the successor sites to Mikey.

A sociopath perpetrated a moral crime, in my opinion. It should have criminal implications.

Again, OutSports must take responsibility for its role in promoting Mikey. I haven’t seen it yet. Your reputation is on the line.

LMAO @ beetlejuice. That is exactly why I was always very suspicious. I used to think “how the hell does he have time for these almost daily blogs and formspring?” I never had that time while playing sports in high school. And also like you said, obviously most high school/college athletes are outwardly homophobic, so many have messed around.

    Now let’s all MOVE ON.

Hockeydave, of course we’re sorry people were hurt by Mikey! I’m sorry we hadn’t said that – I thought it was assumed. But yes we’re sorry. Our mistake was embracing Mikey as much as we did. I was personally very wary of doing so, and now I wish we hadn’t. So there’s regret thrown in there, too.

But on the flip side, good came out of it as well. People found other real people to make them feel better about themselves. He was a liar and a fraud, but good came out of this. You shouldn’t just take the last 6 months and throw them away – you met lots of other great REAL people. Relish in that and don’t let one jerk ruin it all.

Jim, myself and everyone else who’s a part of the Outsports community are not the bad guys here. We’re all doing a LOT of good. In 10 years, we’ve made this one mistake. That’s a pretty good track record. I don’t think our reputation hinges on this one incident (heck, the Army got infiltrated by a fraud). So my apology doesn’t come to defend our “reputation,” but rather because I am sorry people were hurt by something we promoted.

This is not an Oliver Stone manuscript people, so let’s cut to the chase here:
‘Mikey’ is clearly a total fraud….his blog spun out of control and a middle aged man became obsessed with his own perceived, pathetic, pseudo-celebrity status. Given all that has occurred and the vitriol hurled his way, Mikey is no doubt feeling the heat – the anxiety of having his name become public. He sure should be.

Madeleine AND her compassion for gay youth are both real. She wears her heart on her sleeve, so she becomes an easy mark for the ill-informed, and also for the ill. A rare piece of good news in all of this is she will end up the winner here, with MANY new friendships when the dust settles.

I do understand the skepticism, but my best guess is Jimmy is a very lonely 23 year old cyber-addict who feels like a fool and desperately wants to move on. He is tired of being bashed, and I don’t blame him for that. Seriously though, at this point, what exactly do the haters and conspiracy theorists want from him? Until Maddy or Outsports provide me any credible evidence to the contrary, that is how I view Jimmy.

There is no doubt — some vulnerable gay youth have been emotionally scarred and probably permanently changed by this debacle. Let’s just hope they regain their trust in the human spirit and find love and acceptance in the REAL world. As it relates to that emotional damage on the most vulnerable readers of MikeyNation, let’s face it folks, no amount of Outsports investigative journalism into the whos and whys really matters.

  48. #48 Spyro
    on May 22nd, 2010 at 6:54 PM

I’m sorry folks, but I have to laugh. I guess nobody read Armistead Maupin’s The Night Listener. Pity. Having listened to the pud-cast, I’m moved to remark on this Falcon Crest-style melodrama that has evidently captured the imaginations of housewives (Madeleine) and Queens (Cyd & Jim and their faithful commentariat).
Jim and Cyd, face it, you just got egg facials. Can you think of one or two reasons why middle-aged men ought NOT be caught up in a seventeen year old boy’s coming-, as it were, -of-age drama?
And look at your anger when it turns out that Mikey is co-predator rather than prey! Vladymir was prescient in his own way. Rather than whine about the competition, why not…
…Moralize! It sometimes works, after all. But the rest of you, spare me the crocodile tears for all the putative youths who “looked up to” and “were inspired” by this over-the-top closeted married man who lovingly apes the lazy texting conventions of his children. You’re crying for yourselves and your unfulfilled youthful dreams—dreams that you append to the limitless possibilities symbolized by a youthful athlete holding a hockey stick in an iconic pose. Calling for law enforcement to be involved merely adds icing to the infantilism I see here.
    It’s time to grow up.

“In the article, it said something about Jimmy showing his email address was in Manitoba.”

That was my mistake. I rechecked my notes and Jimmy’s posts came from Canadian IP addresses. I typed Manitoba inadvertently for some reason.

  51. #51 JD
    on May 23rd, 2010 at 2:27 AM

And those were IP addresses, not email addresses. Anyone could get a Canadian Hotmail or Yahoo address.

Routing all your traffic when posting comments, writing forum posts, and guest posts through an ISP IP space in another country is a whole other thing. Not impossible but far more difficult to sustain for more than a day or two using the most common methods available.

Oh fuck ~ It’s go time… I was stupid enough to think I could get thru more than six or seven comments b4 I had to jump in n bitch slap someone

Chad u go first… I’m pleased that u want me to contact the lad mikey pretended to be. There were two actually. Try n keep up k? Yea, I figure less than a month b4 their senior proms, I should drop this on them. Should I start with their parents? Girlfriends? Classmates? Morning announcements?… But yea, I want them to remember this as a golden moment in their lives. Graduating highschool jus don’t cut it huh?.

    You’d love to pick up that phone wouldn’t u? Yea, I know u would…

See, the good thing is that only two or three people (other than Mikey) know the identity of these innocent dudes. I know I’m never gonna say anything n I completely trust the others. I even trust Mikey in this instance… so um yea sorry chad. Couldn’t ruin a life or two today but there’s always tomorrow…

As far as where I’ve been – what the fuck is it to u where I am? If u hafta know tho… I was workin. Same as I do every summer. Up in the bush. What u been doin? I tried pluggin a router into a muskrat’s ass but the fucker bit me. Too bad the cell coverage is bout the same shit so I can’t call u every mornin just to see what yur wearin.. too bad. I think I’m gettin a crush…

N just to FINALLY clarify u dirty lil piggies, I was 22 and mikey was 18 when we ‘met’ k? Sure, still a preditor but only a junior one…sorry

I’ve also never made it a secret where I am from and where I am now. So either bone up or shut up. Bone up hehe. That’s what – oh nevermind…

To Kyle – Yea the Nancy Drew blah, blah, blah… I completely agree. Like, why the fuck did all the steel from the twin towers get melted down n destroyed b4 there was ever a chance to study it? Isn’t that more important? I think so… This is such a waste.

See, most of the bickering is bout niggly shit that just doesn’t matter. N the reason it gets blown outta proportion is cause the fuckers who whine n carry on don’t know what the hell is goin on. They were never a part of our community, yet here they are knives n forks ablazin… for what? What is wrong with u dicks?

Speakin of dicks…I totally concur with the bravos n best wishes on a well written article, Jim. I’m glad to see you’ve found your journalistic integrity – which u obviously misplaced after the first story broke…

Shit, when I wrote for u durin the Oly’s, nobody could say peep bout my stuff or you were all over them. I had to ask u to stop. Remember? I do n still have the email. This time though…. holy shit did u bale on me or what? All these screamin meme’s goin on bout how old I am, if I was complicit, etc. etc. u had first hand knowledge – shit u wrote my Olympic bio yourself for christ sake n yet, u couldn’t put down yur cat n pick up a keyboard to straighten that shit out? Fuck, I was gonna puke. I don’t care if it’s legal or not but a 26 year old goin after a 17 year old is fuckin creepy to me dude…Where’d u go? Where was my lil pit bull from February? Your silence was deafening brother…

To K Morgan. Again, if u knew us then maybe…. I had knee surgery n stumbled upon Mikey’s blog by accident, when I was recouping. It was the first n only blog I’ve ever really followed. I’m jus not a blog guy – n since that time have found them to be less than savory. Not a cyber addict either cept for porn of course.

I’m not really that lonely either. I have lots of friends. Some I can see n feel everyday. Others, great friends from all over the world it seems. I can’t touch ‘em but I sure can feel them. But I can always make room for one more, K. Morgan. Perhaps we can meet for pie n coffee? I likes pie. If u knew me you’d know that…

K so I honestly was lil surprised as I’m sure Jim n Cyd were too by the lack of heat comin off this post.. Sorry guys. Why didn’t u just print this three weeks ago Jim? All the facts u laid out u had from the start. One fact that kinda concerned me though was your reference to “mikey” having to give a presentation. Um, he told me that in a private chat. How’d u read that? Jus wonderin. Really don’t care… but curious. I’d also like to point out to those who wondered why my typin n tone was startin to resemble Mikey’s so much n of course had some definitive opinions… see we’d like chat everyday. Sometimes for over 10 hours. Not a few times but ALOT. His crappy ‘penmanship’ started to rub off on me… I said rub off on me hehe…

K so rather than go thru all this hysterical shit again, let’s jus play Q n A. U Q n I’ll A k? Bring it on…. but please be forewarned, I don’t like alot of u so I might be an ass…Too many of u took great pleasure curb-stompin me when I was down n out. It was really shitty. Let’s see what ya got now k?

Speakin of asses, the last word definitely was earned by ‘R’ – who I’m bettin is Rob Cammiso who’s still on hold with the Attorney General’s office…

“So Jimmy was madly in love and thought this guy was his soulmate. This guy that he’s never met or seen in person. Are you serious? What a fucking dumb son of a bitch. You deserve what you got, for being the dumbest fuck in the world. Fucking asshole.”

    U said it sister! ;)

Talk to y’all soon. This is gonna be fun… n your welcome Jim n Cyd for givin ya exactly what you hoped I’d do… Once done, this will be my last visit to Outsports.

Me n Druggy Bear are gonna start up a meth lab…

Peace to all n to all a goodnight ladies. I look forward to answering all your pressing questions…

    Resurrected Moose

P.S. Thanks also to Jim for reprinting my last Mikey post. I never read it til tonight. Fuck again… What the fuck is with u guys?! Under the circumstances, I think it was pretty well written. Dinks…

first of all, why r u attacking outsports for their last article?
as is your attitude always, you think its all about you.
outsports obviously felt they had an obligation to ALL their readers to find out as much of the truth as they could before they could write a final piece. considering publicly u were saying fuck all, except for some incoherent bullshit, they didnt have much choice.
they have provided evidence that privately mikey was advising them that he was lying to you about being 40 and he really was who he said he was. and it was because he was trying to get away from you. very plausible. indeed quite a few ppl suggested it as a possibilityh without even knowing this evidence existed. you are indeed very annoying, and come across as very clingy. . it would have been more irresponsible for them to confirm it was a hoax whilst the apparent perpetrator was telling them it wasnt. furthrmore there is still no complete proof that this isnt even the case.
secondly, ur writing style changes daily. uve partially admitted this urself. who can blame them for mentioning this? blaming chatting to “mikey” for 10 hours a day caused your writing deviations isnt just a lame excuse, its just lame as well., and quite pathetic and sad actually. you chatted to this guy for 10 hours a day, yet u believed he was also off doing all these things he put in his blog? dude, you shoulda known from the very start it was a hoax then. but instead, you chose to come here, and very ferociously attack the ppl here that dared question mikeys authenticity. i quote from the first mikey article:
    “#39 Jimmy
    on Jan 20th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
Been following Mikey’s blog from the beginning and to the people doubting his authenticity: Shut the fuck up. To Danny who’s been on the case since Dec 15th: Yes, yer my hero bro, but shut the fuck up, then go away. ”

where is your apology regarding that now?

i have to congratulate on one thing tho, at least u admit what a loser u r.
“So Jimmy was madly in love and thought this guy was his soulmate. This guy that he’s never met or seen in person. Are you serious? What a fucking dumb son of a bitch. You deserve what you got, for being the dumbest fuck in the world. Fucking asshole.”

Jimmy, do you think Toews could have hired this guy to pretend to be Mikey to teach you a lesson about cheating on him? I mean I heard those Manitoba boys will cut a bitch if they think their man is stepping out on them. I hope you learned your lesson about cheating on JT. Come on this has to be your favorite conspiracy theory so far. And as far as answering these guys questions, fuck them. Why give them the satisfaction of getting the chance to rip you and let them ask you questions like you’re a guy who’s on trial for murder. Let them spin their conspiracy theories on here with each other, while the give each other reach arounds about how they’re on the right track. Jim has already laid out most of the facts here with this article. Since “Mikey” doesn’t want to come forward they can choose to believe all this, or hold out hope that he does exist and this was a big international cover up, and wait around for him and Godot to arrive. Don’t give them answers to satisfy their own selfish needs. Jimmy, you wanna give them something? How about giving them a big middle finger.

@ Jimmy the bushman – plug a router into a muskrat’s ass…classic! So in my view, returning to take Qs and face the music (so to speak) will no doubt silence some of the angry mob, but clearly not all. Clearly the fraudster creep isn’t going to do that. But hey man if you re-read my comment the other day clearly, it states that i don’t blame you for feeling under embarrassed and attack. I understand. Johnny… U are an idiot. Plain n definitely simple. I wasn’t attacking Outsports or Jim for the last article. Sorry for writing in English. Next time, I shall try n communicate in idiot so u can understand…

Fuck you really are a dumb little douche bag aren’t u? Yea… I looked over ALL your pleasant/constructive comments back in April n wow dude, you’re a negative lil princess… What’s wrong anyway. Fuck you’re a sad, sorry little man-chkin Johnny. Have a nice Sunday, idiot. :)

@Pots! Dude! Been a while. How’d the Rangers make out? Have I told u lately JT is the best complete hockey player in the world? Have I told u he’s the cutest? Have I told u Johnny’s an idiot?

While I completely understand n respect your point of view regarding these casterated cattle prods, I wanna have some fun now. Back when this all happened, I couldn’t play. Now I can. So let’s dance… but yea, I certainly have my middle finder poised, positioned n pointed – currently at an idiot…

@ K. Morgan: My Canada Day may be open. I was kinda hopin me n Johnny were gonna be makin some muskrat love but it doesn’t look promising… he’s an idiot.

Yea, my (our) addiction did run pretty deep but hey, we were in love. It’s not like we weren’t bein productive citizens. Afterall, “Mikey” was running a fuckin business while in the business of fuckin with me… But live n learn I spose. Anyway, I’d be happy to spend Canada Day or any day with you K. Morgan. Peace!

P.S. Has anyone seen my bear? He may be on drugs. Please feed if seen n pet gently.

It’s not what you say that counts, it’s what you do. And I don’t see you guys doing anything useful or helpful.

It’s very easy to just come and criticize something that you were not a part of, that you were not involved with.

I see you’re all out for blood, to find and convict the guilty party but he’s not here, he’s long gone and you’re just, unfairly, transferring it to Jimmy.

Let’s not get hysterical and face reality: life is unfair and we’re never going to see the guilty party pay his debt. Let’s just deal with that.

The important thing is that when Mikey was discovered a lot of kids needed and still need help. Several were going through a really difficult period and this kind of dialog only makes things worst.

I hope we can all learn from this, take the best out of it and learn to be better people.

And now they throw a fit and get defended to death when people call them on it?? Ridiculously hypocritical.

As I wrote on my blog: “Clearly he must have powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men — flight? Super-speed? Or does he just teleport himself instantly back and forth? Or maybe he just blinks, or twitches his nose?” Come on, Jimmy, I demand ANSWERS! ;-)

Another hypocrite ^. So being bi is a “choice”?? Just like a lot of people think being gay is a “choice”, right?? Whats the difference??

    A couple of quick points…

    1. Why all the hate for “Bi” people? Why is it so hard to believe that someone can have feelings for both men and women? And quite honestly, why is it necessary to use labels? *sigh*

    2. While Jonathan Toews is cute, I do think Patrick Kane is hotter.

    3. Why continue beating a dead horse here? The issue is resolved – “mikey” was a fraud and unfortunately some people got hurt over it. Time goes on and so too will life. There are more important things in the world to worry about.

C’mon man. U got a problem with Mikey? Fine. U got a problem with me. Cool. jimmy since you said youre taking questions lol, is your hockeymoose facebook page still friends with these kids? are you talking to them at all? why friend their relatives? (ie you friended/were friended by a younger sibling of one of these kids). also, i am not that well versed in facebook privacy settings, but i guess if these kids are supposed to stay anonymous then you should remove your hockeymoose name from their walls, or have them do it.

Again, all of u please listen. This ain’t verbal jousting. These boys don’t hafta know nothin n live completely happy lives. None were harmed. None even knew. I just can’t wrap my head around an open gay person wanting to bring this to his attention. For what gain? To completely fuck up this poor kid? Why. He didn’t do anything. He doesn’t know anything. on May 24th, 2010 at 2:41 AM

ahm yea, I was wonderin if u were gonna ask that…

See, sometimes – rather obscurely at times – mikey would mention he had a younger brother. Um, I think he was referred to as ‘Jacque’…

So my master (I think brilliant) plan was to ‘friend’ mikey’s younger brother ‘Jacque’ hopin he’d answer me faster (cause of that rascally facebook age ‘Jacque’ was at). Perfectly executed. ‘Jacque’ friended me within 10 minutes n I was well on my way to proving Mikey’s lies…

See ppl. Obviously, when I’m asked a sensible question by a community member, I am here to respond. Now if this dude didn’t know shit bout Mikey’s blog or blog family, I may have handled the situation differently and not been as calm or helpful….

I quote from this article the passage “There has been no evidence that Mikey committed any crime and no underage reader of his blog has stepped forward to claim they were propositioned.”

A bill was put through Australian parliament earlier this year, making impersonating a minor online a felony, punishable by up to 3 years Jail. Whether any proposition was involved is not relevant under this law, the impersonation is actually illegal.

Whilst i have studied law in Aust, Im not gunna lie and say i know much about US law, but given that the US generally has much much stricter internet laws than australia do, Id assume to bet that impersonating a minor could be illegal in all if not several US states. I did quite a bit of research into this, and whilst i couldnt find any conclusive evidence as to whether this was illegal federally or not, i found quite a lot of evidence that this is in fact a crime in several US states. Unfortunately i could not find anything regarding this relevant to minnesota.

But basically, its actually quite possible that a crime has been commited. The relevant authorities should actually probably be informed.

Jimmy, as for the kid(s) Mikey was impersonating, i actually strongly disagree with you on that point. I believe they have a right to know the truth, and i dont believe this would ruin their senior year and beyond . Im sure if anyone here was being impersonated, they would like to know about it. i know i would. How do we know that “mikey” is still not impersonating them in some other way. Or how do we know that he wont impersonate them again in the future? How do we know that none were harmed or knew? As far as im concerned, they were harmed, they were impersonated without their knowledge.

  81. #81 JD
    on May 24th, 2010 at 10:24 AM

While I was never sent photos myself, I did research this when I heard about it and was quite surprised to find out that it is – as of now, May 2010, not illegal in the United States or in any US state.

California is the first state working to make the basic online impersonation of another a new class of felony misdemeanor (details here).

This kind of behavior covered, but almost never successfully prosecuted, under existing laws including ones covering industial espionage, stalking, theft, criminal tresspassing, and harrassment.

In the case of photos on Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, etc… the theft and criminal tresspassing laws don’t apply, and unless the inperosnated person is being contacted directly after a request for it to stop, charges under the stalking laws are generally dismissed.

The other cases, where it HAS been successfully prosecuted involve the person has impersonated another for the purposes of (and this is critical) financially defrauding another party. So while you would be safe pretending to be a lost Prince of Siam to get laid, doing so to apply for a credit card or selling farmsteads on the ‘royal lands’ would be illegal.

A recent case came up where you would think it would be cut and dry that the guy was doing something illegal, but it turned out not to be.   A guy impersonated MULTIPLE researchers, scientists, professors, etc.. to try to drum up interest in and controversy around an academic paper his father had written.  Because there was no financial gain (this is an academic paper, not a book sold for profit) the guy was found innocent.

When it HAS been successfully prosecuted in a non-financial context, its always come under harrassment law and the cases have all been proven to involve the specific intent of the perpetrator to cause harm or harrassment or other problems for the actual person in the photos.  These have mostly been along the lines of the revenge or retribution lines.  For example, in one case, a guy found out his girlfriend was cheating on him so he posted risque photos he had taken of her while they were together to a Craigslist type using her name, phone, and address to get guys to go to her house for ’sexual interludes’.

From what I have seen in this case, and based on the answers from lawyers on Expertlaw and similar sites, there is no way a prosecutor would charge this criminally and not one of the personal injury and civil attourneys who responded to solicitations for legal help to go after a person financially thought they could succeed.

Hopefully the US will someday catch up to where Aussieguy shows that Australia is now and we will lose the whole US legal construct that says if you share anything online you give up your rights to how its used EXCEPT when it comes to money.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, but I am a decent researcher.  If someone can find a case where this was legally prosecuted (criminally or civilly) when the subject of the photos did not have their name, address, phoen numbers, etc… released I would love to know about it.  From my reading its clear the legal community in the US is as upset about fact that lawmakers have not updated the legal codes as the victims.  If California’s current attempt passes and then holds up to legal challenges, we may see that start to change.

I’m not outing him publicly, I am going to message him on facebook and just make him aware of the situation at hand. Hell, I know I would want to know if some older dude was using my photos and impersonating my life. Oh, and save me the drama. Knowing this may shock him, but it’ll hardly ruin his life.

And as far as me “using my head,” where was that head of yours when you were INSULTING ANYONE AND EVERYONE ON MIKEYS BLOG WHEN THEY QUESTIONED WHETHER HE WAS REAL???

Not to pick nits… but “Mikey” was provided the free hosting, tech support.etc for the blog/board. I assume that is a service one normally charges for? I also understood that it was given to him for free because of who he was pretending to be…as sort of a community service? right? So, he DID financially defraud a party.

  84. #84 JD
    on May 24th, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Mick: I AM the hosting provider defrauded in your example and just I do not think it would be worth my time or effort to try to recover about $37.25 in services.

Meant to mention in the earlier comment as well, that the lawyers who did respond to these questions almost universally suggested the best course of action to be contacting Facebook, MySpace, or other hosting enterprise and ask them to remove the profile or photos.

In this case, we removed the blog as soon as this was reported so thats done, and as far as I know, the photos under discussion are the ones sent to Chad and others via email.

well, whether a crime was committed by MINO or not, he certainly deserves to be outed… will this result in possible harm to his family? that would be HIS fault, not the community that he recklessly misled…

most importantly, outing this guy will be the ONLY real proof that MINO is not actually an 18yo hockey player…

Chad: Mikey didn’t use these kids’ photos. He just sort of used their lives to model his story on. The photos he used were from websites. You need to read everything before going nutso. There is no reason to tell these kids anything. It’ll just disturb them… and what is the point in that?

  87. #87 Mick
    on May 24th, 2010 at 2:03 PM

@JD… I had no idea what the costs associated with running that were. Just pointing out what I saw as a mistake of fact in your post. As you are (apparently) the only one with any legitimate claim of damage, clearly any further action rests with you. The damages were nominal and you’ve made the decision they are not worth the time to pursue. So be it. That should close the matter…but somehow I think this thread is going to go to 300 like the last one.

  88. #88 Chad

One of their names has been printed on another blog. While we THINK “mikey” has never distributed these photos,we can’t be sure. And really, the fact that he has access to information about the lives of these kids is disturbing as well.

If an old man was using my life as a basis for his lies to deceive minors, I would certainly want to know. Of course the kid will be disturbed, I would too, but I would also be extremely thankful that someone informed me of this so I can properly protect myself and have the heads-up of what has been happening.

I thought that with experience over the years of seeing the worst hurt and pain, emotional, physical, and psychological, that one human can inflict on another that I’d be desensitized to it. But reading the comments on this story truly make me sad.

I’ve said all along, Mikey was the true perpetrator of hurt here. A lot of people were fooled and many defended Mikey, one even feel in love with him. None did any of that out of evil intentions. Yes, maybe it was foolish and gullible. I’ll own that for myself but it’s in my nature to be trusting and I’ll probably be hurt again. But I prefer to see the world as basically good with a few bad apples than the other way around.

Reading the insulting comments towards Jimmy and Madeleine are beyond the pale.

When Jimmy found out about Mikey, he had two choices: he could quietly disappear into the ether leaving Mikey writing his blog and maybe hurting some other young guy down the road who may make the same mistake. The second choice was to do something to insure Mikey couldn’t continue and potentially hurt anyone else. To do that, he knew he’d probably have to share some personal details as well as open himself to some slings and arrows (but not to the extent that has pervaded these comments). But he chose to do the right thing and that says a lot about his character.

So for the commentors critical of his foolishness, I would only ask that if you found yourself in a similar situation, would you do the right thing or quietly slink away? Of course you may say that you would never make this mistake. Maybe. But I will guarantee that you will make a foolish mistake somewhere sometime – you’re not foolproof. I can only hope that karma is a bitch and that there are plenty of people to laugh and point when you do.

@Luke Reading your comments are wonderful and demonstrate where the real concern should be here. You’re an impressive guy.

@Potvin Both smart and an smartass. I gotta love it. You’d make a hell of a Flyers fan. ;)

so, why can’t someone identify MINO? I fail to see what any legal repercussions would be for exposing the fraud (it is the risk that “Mikey” alone took and he will be wholly responsible for the results), and as I stated before, it is really the only way to settle the controversy….

its good you took control of the comments its just way out of control. i don’t understand it all to be honest with you. i understand people are pissed that they got played and want blood for this. i ask what good is that going to do? yeah mikey is an ass and played a lot of people but in all he was just another story on the net. he didn’t steal any money all he did was making a lot of people to believe in him. hell when brat boy school went down he did burn a lot of people for money and there was call for blood from ethan but nothing ever happen and just like this story a few months it will be all forgot about until the next one comes along. these people using all your energy on wanting a hanging could go toward something good. they just need to face it they got played and mikey isn’t going to come back an explain why and jimmy he’s not going to give anymore than he already has. best thing people can do is to move on. just my thoughts anyway.

When it comes to the Mikey situation, I will admit that I commute through Plymouth every day, and I’ll admit that I live around that area. “Mikey” and I have talked, and I figured that he lived there when we talked about the location of a restauarant and he said that this pizza parlor called Solo’s was by the (rather hidden) hockey arena, when it’s like 5 miles away on the other side of the interstate. Only a local would know that.

I wasn’t pissed when I heard about the deception. I was rather confused and thought that he was just stupid, desperate teenager. Then this article came up, and now I’m angry. This guy could live a few blocks from me or even be my next door neighbor and he knows me through the comments, forums and e-mails, when he was completely lying about his identity. This guy could have figured me out based on what I’ve said in the forums and in his comments (like my height, for example) and he could have figured me out and caused some unneeded trouble in my life. Hennepin County in general is huge, so maybe I’m exaggerating here, but I’m happy that nothing has happened to me.

So all u *Crap-Happy-Aware-Deficient* (I love acronyms too!) mabel’s haven’t come up with anything more. I gave u the whole day for fuck sake…

Pity, as one of u said…

Another one of u CHAD’s said: “… I am not outing him publicly, I am going to message him on Facebook… ”

and who goes on to say … “… while we THINK “mikey” has never distributed these photos, we can be sure …”

Let me re-quote a couple of things – with the emphasis on a different word:

    “…while WE think…” and/or “…WE can’t be sure…”

[I'm sittin here writin this while Lewis Black is rippin into the 'moronity' of Glenn Beck. The similarities between Glenn Beck and u CHAD's is surreal.]

So, u CHAD’s have organized? Oh-oh. This won’t be good. Now, you’re a ‘WE’. Kinda like FOX News? Oh-oh. Again. Pity. Again.

The same CHAD goes onto say in ANOTHER comment: “O, you’re right. You should be pissed. I would certainly want to know if that creep was my next door neighbor.”

To O: Yea, sorry man. It sucks. Too close to home, for sure. However, “this creep” is harmless. I KNOW HIM. He’s waaay more scared than dangerous. Perhaps we both learned somethin, eh? I mean, he had to live somewhere. Sorry for u he live(s)(ed) near you. Suxy. Please know, you won’t need to worry bout him. He’s more worried bout you. k?

Now, back to the previous CHAD. The one who feels it’s his moral obligation to alert the kid who mikey was pretending to be. I can tell u why/how harmful it would be to him/them if they found out about all this. I could.

But given the opportunity to find out why, you’ve chosen to ignore the opportunity and instead – with the help of ‘WE’ – think you’re better qualified to pursue this than I or anyone else.

I gave all u CHAD’s an offer to ask me anything n so far, none of u have. Surprise, surprise, surprise. [Sigh]

To answer one of your commrades/members: No, my job doesn’t begin in April n end in May. We Canadiums have a thing called “Days Off”. In my case, I work a shit-load of days in a row, so I get more days off in a row. Silly, isn’t it?

Anyway, those silly days off are comin to an end. Unless the temperment of the muskrat’s have improved, my internet access will be bout the same as it was before. Shitty. So, this is your last chance for a bit to ask me/find out why u should resign from this negative/destructive organization known as CHAD (or FOX News)… Please give it some heed/thought. Peace. ~ Jimmy :)

P.S. Thru all this bullshit, I have met alot of absolutely fantastic people…

Some of you are Flyer fans. Some of you love the Hawks. I love each n everyone of you. Serious.

As stated, my self-imposed punishment for all this mikey crap has been to boycott the rest of the playoffs n start fresh next season. When I said it/thought it – it seemed plausible/possible. It hasn’t been easy, fun or sensible. Fuck you Mikey. You took from me somethin I didn’t think possible. Hockey. Shit. :(

Speaking of people I’ve met thru all this bullshit…

U CHAD’s n wannabe’s have really screwed-up one other thing that should make u hang your collective heads…

Madeleine. My lil sister Maddy. Today is her 20th birthday. She’s leaving her teens alot smarter than she entered them that’s for sure.

    Smarter good? I dunno.

Here is a young lady who for whatever reason decided her mission(s) in life would be animals n gay rights. So far, the only animals in this garbage have had two legs, NOT four. Pity.

To everyone of you who have attacked n took ‘enjoyment’ from what u put her thru – think Judgement Day OK? Karma? I’m ok with that too.

Shit. People think I was thrown under a bus? Man, u CHAD’s made sure u backed over her. WTF? A hetro-teenage-girl fed up with the treatment of gays n u guys just wanna eat her alive n punish her. For believing. In someone. Shit. Shame. Pity. Why?

This girl is gonna be a vet. She may look after your dog. I KNOW I’d want her to look after mine. Why did u find it in your black souls to attack an ally? Totally, completely incomprehensible. Shame. Shame. Shame.

So yea, Maddy – My lil sis n warrior – Happy Birthday Sweetheart! There are waaay more ppl out here who love you n appreciate you than the CHAD’s. Ignore the CHAD’s. Hugs n Kisses ~ J :)

I find it sad that this Mikey discussion just goes on and on for hundreds of comments on multiple pages while when Brendan Burke died, it got less than 50 comments.

I know… a lot of people got hurt by “Mikey”. It sucks, but I think we’ve all been there… someone from online isn’t who they say. I’ve been down that road before. It was by no means fun at the time and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else, but I came through and think I’m a stronger, smarter person as a result. People will get over it.

I just hope once the initial shock of this fraud passes, people will put “Mikey” behind them and instead remember Brendan, a real role model who was also lost.

Question for Jimmy, if you’re answering, Why is it that telling these kids that some weirdo has been using their lives is such a bad idea? Aside from the, it’ll ruin their senior year bit.

First off, I don’t understand the “FOX News” joke.

And Josh, only overly sensitive people would let a heads-up like this “ruin their senior year.” Jimmy is just throwing crap on the wall to see if it sticks with some of the fools.

Hey Jimmy: Thanks for going whole hog and posting here. And thanks to Jim for writing a final article on Mikey with all the details. It sure does make us all seem sort of naive, doesn’t it?

Did you ever wonder, Jimmy, how Mikey could spend all that time blogging? It must have taken him hours. No time for hockey or the honor roll. The dude must not have much of a law practice, eh?

Jimmy, not counting muskrat love, you’re sure to find someone real up there. I met the nicest, cutest guys in Canada. How come you’re all so cute? It must be something in the water.

So, yeah, it’s over. Mikey graduated first in his class, got a full athletic scholarship to UM Minneapolis and played hockey for the King of Norway. Isn’t that Oscar in a Can?

@Josh: “Why is it that telling these guys that some weirdo has been using their lives is such a bad idea?”

Are u actually serious? Or is your question merely an attempt to qualify for the FU CHAD clan?

You guys have answered this one for yourselves. Have u read some of the shit that’s been piled on innocent people in this ordeal? I’m not going to subject them to the unnecessary pain n suffering you all love to administer on the wounded. You guys have absolutely no souls. You haven’t been able to put yourself in anybody’s place n felt what they might be going thru. You haven’t cause that’d be no fun right?

It should also be emphasized that both these dudes are about to go thru the NHL draft at the end of June. Man, do u have any idea what the teams put you through to see if you’re worth the risk of drafting? I’d say NO. Anyway, let me just say that the psychological testing is torturous, and it’s not just one test. It’s a series of different applications. It is drawn up to filter out the guys who maybe aren’t strong enough between the ears to compete at that level…

I’m sure telling these boys a month before the biggest days of their lives about ‘Mikey’. That should have them scoring very well. Oh well, it’s not your lives right? No it’s theres. Leave them to live it ok? It really is the optimum case of ‘ignorance is bliss’.

They don’t NEED to know any of this ever occurred. It will NOT make the situation better. It will make it worse. There’s already been too much worse. Why can’t u guys see that? Or is it that you don’t WANT to see what the honourable thing to do here is?

@Chad: “First off, I don’t understand the FOX News joke.”

    Surprise, surprise, surprise…

“Jimmy is just throwing crap on the wall to see if it sticks with some of the fools.”

You Chad – leader of the FU CHAD Clan – are the only piece of crap I’d like seen thrown against a wall. Several times. I bet some of the rest of us “fools” would too.

@chiguy ~ Hey dude, the view from cloud nine must be pretty awesome right now eh? (just btwn u n me – Go Hawks Go – shhh). The reason Mikey had so much time to blog is that it really didn’t take up that much time. He always told me he’d usually write his post the night before n then it would post the next day. If you noticed, Mikey didn’t spend alot of time on his blog. Somedays, he’d stay on-line n answer or comment the comments – but most of the time he’d just post til the next day n be done with it. It was the rest of us that would stay n play – thus the creation of the forum…

It is rather funny tho that I was always after him to lighten the load. Take some time off. Even the OS writer of this story emailed me/him n suggested that I should take the reins a couple of times a week so ‘Mikey’ wouldn’t burn out.

    Isn’t irony ironic?

Maddy truly did get the lousy end of the deal for someone who really does care about other people. In the hours after the last post on the blog, Maddy reached out to the different posters she knew to make sure they were ok and to offer whatever support she could.

She had the same options as Jimmy had: walk away (the option a lot of other regulars on the blog took) or try to help. Maddy reached out and tried to help. Her only concern in all of this was making sure the other young people, many of whom were devastated by the events that happened, knew they weren’t alone and she was there in any way she could be. She offered as much as she could while trying to finish up her own school year and deal with this as much as she could.

Her reward for that concern: accusations and conspiracy theories that make the ones surrounding the moon landing look positively rational. More impressive was that when faced with all of that, she didn’t turn her back on the whole mess, she hung in there and did whatever she could to help those most hurt by this. Through the 300 some odd comments on the other thread, many of them just directly insulting to her, she still hung in there.

If our community had more allies like her, the world would be a different place.

Happy Birthday Maddy and may your birthday wishes come true!

I used Google Reader to subscribe to this blog after reading about it here. And Google Reader alerted me to the fact that it was a scam right away, if indirectly.

It has a very smart “you might also like” feature, and once it saw I was potentially in the market for this kind of thing it offered up more and more “not-out gay-athlete/college kid” blogs every day.

They were all the same: Some hot-sounding (but never pictures because remember he’s “not out to the team”) earnest young kid waxing earnestly about the other player he’s hot for, the action he does and doesn’t get, how excited he is to be on the cusp of a scary-but-exciting life, and how grateful he is for all the support he gets here on his little blog.

I mean, there seems to be an actual formula, and an endless number of these blogs, none of which acknowledge any of the others.

It has to be a scam, but here’s the thing: For what? Do people send money? Can the adsense payments really be that much of a goldmine?

I’m as curious as these supposed not-out-gay-boys: What’s the endgame with these things?

    Anyone?

(ps I’m 18 and really hot, sorta-swimmery ya know?)

@Mattheww ~ Hey you’re spose to be askin me stuff not ‘anyone’. Anyone will undoubtedly be part of the CHAD clan n try n tell u all the aforementioned blogs are by the same guy…

You do bring up a great point and the one which made me fall for the whole thing in the first place… What was his endgame? Bein new to the whole bloggin world, I just didn’t find it conceivable some dude would invent this world of make-believe and not have a game plan.

What was Mikey’s? I still don’t know. I’ve asked and asked and asked but so far, I only get that ’someday’ I’ll know the truth – or reasons…

Until then, your guess is as good as mine. To me, “Mikey” was just trying to help. I can’t see anything sinister in his actions other than kickin my balls back n forth… but overall, he was just tryin to help. At least that’s how I’m seein it…

Yea I was wondering that too, what’s this guy get from it? Jimmy I know you say it wasnt much time, but to me it seems like it was. Blog posts, blog replies, over 1000 formspring replies, personal emails and chats as Mikey. That’s a lot of time to develop a fake life. What was his goal? Just attention and fantasy play?

I’m not one of the “young” closeted hockey players, but I am a 20something hockey player that isn’t out to my team. I enjoy talking about it online because it gives me a chance to discuss the issues I’m dealing, while remaining confidential. But I can’t imagine why someone would want to fake it. I can see people doing it for financial gain, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

  112. #112 LogopolisMike
    on May 25th, 2010 at 5:44 PM

I’m not sure what is sadder — that someone would do this or that so many people would be hurt by it.

There are exactly two things that being gay and the Internet have in common thee days — neither of them is something you should take seriously if people insist on being anonymous about them in 2010.

No kid these days is going to be naive enough to think something posted on the Internet will stay secret. Continuing to promote people who refuse to take even a baby step out of the closet, no matter their situation, no matter their age, continues to promote not only the culture of the closet but also assholes like this who fuck with people.

Anonymized athletes, no matter their situation, is nothing we should promote if we have any pride or self-respect at all. It’s not 1996 anymore.

If you aren’t connecting with people in real life, you aren’t connecting with them. I think it’s great that people make friends and acquaintances over the Internet, but please, don’t let it be your whole — or even 20% of your life. It’s going to end in pain because there are too many assholes out there. If something seems too good to be true, it is until you met it in person, consider it bunk.

  114. #114 Ian
    on May 25th, 2010 at 5:56 PM

@LogopolisMike — I understand your point that we shouldn’t promote closeted athletes. And while you didn’t directly say it, I’m wondering if you think we shouldn’t even respect players who don’t take “a baby step out of the closet”.

I’m afraid that even though this isn’t 1996 anymore, the life of a young athlete in a sport like hockey doesn’t lend itself to openness. I admire those that are brave enough to come out,but for those of us that aren’t — what do you suggest? We NOT use the internet to discuss our situations? Or if we do discuss our situations on the internet, nobody should take us seriously?

I understand there are assholes out there. But you seem to be implying that gay athletes should either be open and not anonymous — or get no respect?

I’m not trying to start a fight here. Just trying to point out that some of us really do want to use a medium like this to discuss our issues.

Hey no problem there Jimmy, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I’m assuming neither yours or mine or anyone else’s on here is expert advise. I’m not invested in the Hockey kid story/saga, just thought this was an interesting article because my son was recently stalked on an old Myspace page (he hadn’t used in over a year). The stalking led to this creep getting all his info and using that to contact his friends pretending to be him.Yes, this is the dumbed down version of what all happened but the moral of the story is that I was thankful when another parent told me what was going on when this creep tried contacting their son, while representing himself as my son. Was my son creeped out? Duh. Scared? A little. But he got over it, and learned a decent lesson, the real world is scary, and as fake as people say the internet is, it is a very real place, and sometimes, you just have to deal with it. No big felony was committed, but this person now has several restraining orders on his record that might make him think twice about messing with peoples lives in the future. I don’t know the specifics of this ordeal, but as a parent, I would want to know who has this much access to my children’s life, and why. As a citizen, I would want to do something to make sure that this creep wouldn’t do the same again, with other kids, and hopefully set a precedent, in law, to help detour this from happening in the future. My son was able to study for the SATs while going to court to hash this all out, and did amazingly by the way (no NHL draft for him). But I’m sure this kid can handle what he’s got going on as well.

I guess my POV is a little biased, in a crazy parent sort of way.

Hey Josh ~ I have empathy for you n your boy. Creepy? Yea… Would I want that guy stopped? Yea… Would I like to kick him in the nuts too? Oh yea…

But this is a completely different situation. There was no stalking. There was no ‘pretending to be’ so mikey could contact others ‘pretending to be’. None of that at all.

All Mikey needed/wanted was a name to use as an identity. Believe me, he didn’t want to. He begged not to. I wouldn’t listen. He needed a name n gave me one (then another)…

So yea, as I said, I feel sorry your son had to go through what he did but I bet it made him (and his friends) smarter when it comes to this social networking bullshit…

My ‘Mikey’ won’t need restraining orders or the like. He’s in hiding and wants to stay that way. He may even be dying hehe. NOBODY needs to worry bout ‘Mikey’ resurfacing n causing more of the same problems. NOBODY.

I’m glad to hear this guy wasn’t actually using this kid’s info/stories and passing them off as his own. Not that what he had going on wasn’t weird and wrong, can’t say I feel any less bad for a grown man who feels the need to do something like this. 3. What happened to my Habs and Halak?

Hey Luke! My wonderful Brazilian brother! How come u get to have a gravatar n the rest of us don’t? Yours is nice too. Sorry bout your new team. You should be proud of their effort. Halak looks(?) like the real deal (I didn’t see him but I read he was awesome). What happened to them is really quite simple. They aren’t that good. A few (maybe more) players away from being good. They jus got on a wave n rode it. I bet it was fun to watch your new adoptive team do what they did tho. Jus remember, next season when they suck again, don’t jump off the bandwagon. A true fan sticks with their team no matter what…

As far as Jake n Josh go… yea, chatted with both of them a number of times. My spider sense was on full alert too. The first time was with Jake n I read n re-read that chat many times. I concluded I was definitely talkin to a 14 year old kid…

As far as Josh goes, same deal. Their persona’s changed. They were different people. The most recent incident n you may remember was a Saturday night not too long ago when Josh n Mikey went to the Wild game. n got drunk. I chatted with Josh earlier when Mikey was in the shower. Then after the game, I was chattin with Mikey while he was over on the forum chat makin a drunk fool of himself. Aah good times.

Bottom line is this guy was good. It’s not like a phone call that’s not being recorded – that u hear once n haft conclude things from memory. These were chat’s that I could read as many times as I wanted. It convinced me for sure I was dealing with three different people.

Amazingly, there was only ‘Mikey’… weiurd eh? He was good. Really good… Talk soon Luke. Cheers! ~ J :)

Jimmy, Hey bud-did Mikey ever show any real remorse for what he did to you after you found out? I think he must have some sense of remorse to his personality? I remember one formspring question he answered of mine, he gave kind of a cocky, smart ass reply at first, but then backtracked and gave a reply that sounded almost like an apology.

  125. #125 hockeyiscanada
    on May 25th, 2010 at 11:55 PM

Shit. Sorry Joe. I didn’t think anybody noticed me dodging that one. K, I’ve had this conversation with someone else today so it’s obvious now, the truth needs to be revealed…

I am an alien. The one’s from outer space. NOT south of the border. I am from the planet Melmac. I am an alien life form. You may call me Alf. I love to eat cats. In a recent story I had Mikey eat a cat. I wrote that. It came from my fun factory.

So the evidence was there all along. All it took was the Flyers to get to the Stanley Cup final for someone to realize something was amiss. Who da thunk it eh?

So yea, I came down, blah, blah, blah n created Mikey. I made him live in Minnesota cause I like the way people talk there. Cute accent. They’re also almost Canadium. Canadium’s are highly regarded on my planet.

I really didn’t mean for any of this to go this far – and on behalf of my planet, I would like to apologize to one n all for my deceit n deception. I’d also like to apologize to the thousands of cat owners who may be missing ‘tiger’ or ‘tinker-bell’.

An Alf hasta eat dudes… Ha!

But while I await the mothership to come n get me, I would again like to add that ‘Mikeys’ blog did serve a purpose. A good purpose. It actually did what it set out to do. Let young teenage jocks-or-not know they aren’t alone. There are plenty of you out there. Good ones. Real ones. ‘Mikey’ was a figment. You are not. Not to the people who know you. Not to the people who love you. Not to yourselves. Take what u learned from ‘Mikey’ n make it a positive. That’s all I’m gonna try n do. Since all u guys/gals now know you’re not alone, go with strength. There is strength in numbers and ‘Mikeys’ blog proved to each of us the strength we have. Peace dudes/dudettes. Until my next visit to Planet America, stay cool and your cat’s fat. Cheers! ~ A.L.F.

Jimmy, missed you, guy. In a strictly platonic sense that is. $h*t, hopefully the conspiracy theorists don’t read too far into this :) Like you said, there were many people at the former blog who had hearts of gold. Not much I can say other than keep you head up, because you’re an awesome dude. Don’t think I’ve ever come across someone who’s equally intelligent, articulate and witty as you are. One problem though, now I have no one to call me out on my constant, overbearing, unfaltering support for my team :)

Madeleine and I still talk fairly regularly… she really is a great gal. How selfless of her to dedicate so much time to LGBT rights, and to think she isn’t even one of ‘em! Go figure, eh?! I think my head would have been on the chopping block if I forgot about today :) Good thing my trusty phone is useful for things other than drunk textin. Hmmm. I wonder what the CHAD’s think of that theory?

Shit sorry guys. I thought i was stayin on top of this dealy. Dave my blackhawk fan…

Yea, Mikey showed/conveyed remorse. No matter what he did, no matter who he really is – he’s still the same guy really. They guy we related to n some of us took it a lil further (doh!).

Whoever he is he’s got a big heart n really did care. You wouldn’t believe how many times he asked me if he should apologize for somethin he wrote. Sometimes I told he maybe should – but the vast majority of the time it was jus Mikey bein sensitive towards others.

I DON’T THINK HE FAKED THAT! At least, that’s how I’m choosing to read it. He had/has a heart. He cared. Perhaps that’s why he did what he did. I dunno. I thought I’d know by now but I still don’t. I guess maybe I have to come to terms with the fact I’ll never know.

But what I do know – in my heart – Mikey didn’t set out to hurt me or anyone else. Until the man himself says it straight to my face I am gonna live the rest of my life believing that. He meant no harm…

Again, sorry bout my tardiness. I guess I’m outta practise when it comes to these blog thingys. Shit, how I wish! Later! ~ J ;)

It’s not aliens, Jimmy. It is mind control rays. For years, the United States has planned to use signals emitted from the GPS satellites to remove our free-will and secure world domination. Canada has been the test bed for the mind control system. How else can you explain why people would root for the Maple Leafs except mind control? ;)

This blog was the phase 2 pilot plan. If they could get the gay athletes under control, the rest of society would fall immediately in line. Something went wrong — a lot of solar flares and volcanoes disrupting the radio signals maybe.

It is important that everyone reading this go and immediately make a radio wave insulating helmet out of aluminum foil. Whatever happens then, don’t take the helmet off – ever. After a while, the mind alterations become permanent (see Glenn Beck) so time is of the essence people!

Ha! My parents have been makin me wear a helmet for years! I once asked why it was lined with foil n they said somethin bout baked potato’s n that God (Glenn Beck) had a plan for me…

Well Chad – leader of the CHAD’s it was one of the comments thankfully deleted by the lil pit bull buzinski…

BUT since I’ve had a chance to go back n look, it is POSSIBLE the ‘mother’ comment was made by your second-in-command of the CHAD’s – Johnnie.

If so, I apologize. However, if it was you n now u bring it up knowing it was already deleted then that makes u an even bigger douche bag…

Since I still have faith in most humans (u are one aren’t u?), I’m gonna stick with my apology n take u at your word it wasn’t you who made the (deleted) comment.

@Ed, yeah that’s what that tower in Toronto is for.

@Taylor, ppl’s caring comments made the blog be what it was.

@my Canadian bro, it was very fun rooting for them. Like rooting for David against Goliath (I must be really really old). I agree, there are some things we choose for life.

Lol I had a Snoopy doll, no surprise there I guess.

I agree with Taylor, you’re very smart, savvy, hilarious and a very good writer. Yeah he is. His writing has color, different shades and moods he writes with ease and flow and you can always understand, even complicated thoughts in a few lines.

Although Mikey might be a good guy he should have called it off especially regardin you and definitely not string along. I’ve watched a documentary about this woman, Tania Head, who faked about being a 9-11 survivor and became an important spokesperson and helped a lot of ppl (even met with Giuilani and Pataki). There are ppl who do these things. Imo it’s like a disorder.

@Luke Excellent catch with the CN tower! I’d say you were in great danger for discovering that but since the GPS satellites provide mind control and not location information and no one in America studies geography anymore, you’re probably safe. ;)

It was a great series though. The one thing that I really enjoy about hockey is the handshake at the end of the series. It is nice to see a little mutual respect conveyed for the other players.

Here’s a question (everyone else can chime in too)…

Who do you root for now? My friends and I were discussing this. Do you become vindictive and root against the team that just beat you? Do you root for the team that just you beat because psychologically it lets you rationalize it if you think you were beaten by a “good team?” Do you even care? ;)

@Jimmy, I agree with Taylor. You should consider a career as a writer – even as a side job. You always make me laugh.

@Taylor As Maddy will attest, I’ve been handling the drunk emailing pretty well lol. And you’re a great guy too so you’re allowed to say whatever you want, nice or not!

    on May 26th, 2010 at 11:13 AM

@Ed ~ I would only consider a career in writing if I could use crayons … Then when my critics accuse me of ‘waxing’ poetic, they’d at least be half right… ;)

In my experience, the team who you root for depends on the team who ousted you. Usually, you’d like to cheer on the team which beat you – but sometimes the ‘hatred’ is just too intense to do so…

Intense hatred or not, the handshake at the end of a series is a great moment in sports. I love watchin guys in line who have been wanting/trying/succeeding in killing each other over the course of a series, meet in line and offer congrats or condolences. Classic!

@Danny ~ I agree completely. It is time to move on. No more Mikey – please! There was too much ‘hate’ that came out – from a blog which never had any. Our detractors stated (and correctly) that we’d jump on whoever dared talk smack bout our Mikey or anything Mikey-related. True. But that was just us protecting our neighbourhood. Again, it was our place. Real or not, it was real to us. Mikey or no Mikey.

So while a whole bunch of you took great pleasure in pointing out our gullibility, stupidity and blind-faith, why did it matter so much to you? It didn’t affect you. You should have stayed quiet.

Maybe offer a knowing pat on the behind, a wink of wisdom or even a shoulder … But instead, you sharpened your knives and went to work, carving up some pretty damn good people.

That’s what I’ll remember as the worst of this experience. The hatred spewed by the unknowing. The one’s who shouldn’t/couldn’t have an opinion had many. All destructive – far from constructive.

So yea, while what Mikey did was awful – what alot of you did was far worse. You purposely tried to hurt – where Mikey never did. All he did was try to help. And since he wasn’t here for your class-action execution, you directed your venom on the innocent. The weak and the wounded. Salivating at every new slanderous slam of someone. Kudo’s dudes. Totally righteous. I’m sure that you’re all proud of your ethical high-ground, moral mentality. I pity the poor bastard(s) who’s next on your list. Sigh … :(

My problem is that you often showed ZERO respect on the blog for people who offered merely an OPINION on Mikey possibly being fake. You can disagree, but you often told people to STFU and go away. So you show a lack of respect for those people and now you come on here begging for respect for yourself?? It’s a 2-way street. You didn’t show much and now you’re begging for it.

  143. #143 hockeyiscanada
    on May 26th, 2010 at 12:15 PM

@Chad ~ The reason for our reaction was a simple one. You (folks) would come on – state your claims Mikey was a phony – but without a shred of evidence. Your presence was confounding. Do you guys like surf the net looking for something to denounce? Why?

As stated many, many times: Who cares if u thought Mikey was a fake? Why was it up to you n your clan to ‘make us aware’ of something that crossed every one of our minds, at least once.

It was our tree fort. Our fishin hole. Mikey continued to prove himself to us everyday – not with his identity – but with his caring and compassion and a keen sense of humour. That was good enough for us. Many of us. Not all of us. Some of you looked upon this ‘new’ high-profile blogger and decided ‘he’ wasn’t worthy of a place in your world. So he became ‘fake’.

Only thing is – he wasn’t part of your world. He was part of ours. We’d gather at Mikey’s place – 90% of the time without Mikey – and have some fun and help those who wanted it. Why was that on your hit list? Did you feel left out? You could have come on the blog, kept your suspicions to yourself and soon found the place wasn’t half bad. I assure you – you would have been met with open arms – and open minds – something you and the rest of your posse should learn about.

So yea Chad. We attacked anyone and everyone who dared question Mikey’s authenticity. That’s because you didn’t earn the right to challenge it…

Do you think if say, Maddy came on n commented that she suspected Mikey was a fraud – we woulda jumped all over her? Doubt it. We woulda wanted to know why. Remember, I’m the bozo who blew the flaps off this circus tent. I don’t remember much about ‘way-back-when’ but I don’t recall any of my Mikey faithful calling me out. Maybe they did – but if so, they EARNED the right. See the difference?

*n yea, thru further investigation, it was in fact your Johnnie who made the crack about my mom. Therefore, I again apologize to you personally for accusing you for an attack made by one of your henchmen.

Perhaps at your next clan meeting you should sit Johnnie down and explain to him: Mothers and Nuns are off-limits. Or not … Far be it for me to tell u how to run your organization. ;)

    ~ Jimmy

Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you had be part of a special club in order to express opinions. Do you realize how elitist and snobby your statement sounds?? You preach openness and yet you attack people how come on and merely express their opinion. You did it by getting personal and insulting people.

If you had come on here and apologized for the way you treated the people who merely had and expressed their opinions, all would be cool. But you clearly don’t see any fault in what you did by telling people to go away when their opinion differed from yours.

@Chad ~ Elitist n snobby? Moi? How dare you hehe. It WAS a special club – and as I said – you would’ve been more than welcome to join – just not show up – spew your theories n then climb back under your rock.

Why would our reaction surprise you?

It’s just like if you went up to my dad n told him I’m an idiot. While he may agree with you, he may take exception since you don’t KNOW I’m an idiot – you’re only speculating…

So it wasn’t elitism or snobbery that got u shit on dude. It was your holier-than-thou attitude towards Mikey and OUR blog. Nothing more. All were welcome. All still would be if things had worked out differently…

And one last thing Chad-man. You love to use the word hypocritical. Man if that’s not the kettle…

The shit you said, the attitude you took (take) n then telling me (us) that we got personal and insulting. Please go re-read the comments from both threads. The disrespectful ones weren’t from Mikey nation (until kicked a few times). The disrespectful were your clan members. It’s in print. It’s undeniable. It’s sad…

HEY JimmyJimmy! (Just wanted to get your attention and to let you know in code who this is. ;-) )

SO much to say about all this; I’m not at all surprised by the numbers of comments, good, bad, or indifferent. I’d like to reiterate some of the same things others have posted here because I don’t think they can be said enough.

First, thank you Jim, Cyd, and JD for the time and work you’ve put into this.

Second, the HATRED, abuse, and cruelty here shown toward Jimmy and Madeleine is jaw-dropping. And juvenile. And this deviates from the crux of the story– an astoundingly successful hoax. They don’t need me fighting their battles, but I can’t keep quiet about it. I was, I believe, one of the first 1 or 2 people to comment on Jimmy’s “That’s All, Folks” on the old Mikey forum. My response was immediate and from the gut. I was thrown for a big loop and I’m not a child or an idiot. Still, in the heat of those initial moments, I even had to question the reality of J & M. I have since been disabused of this notion and am glad to have a more public forum to apologize to them both.

Followers of the forum know that Jimmy and Madeleine were integral to its success and, yes, I believe we have to focus on the good: Madeleine as the compassionate, cool, caring “older sister” and Jimmy as the bright jokester, keeping things light. They don’t owe any of us “explanations.” Yet, here they are answering questions. What more is wanted or needed? If you find fault with their actions I can only ask, “Why the heck do you even care?” It’s their own business. And the continued harping on them, esp. Jimmy, to come up with explanations/answers makes me point out that by following that logic, EVERY regular follower of the forum and believer in the reality of Mikey should be grilled about their own motives, reasons, ingenuousness, etc. So throw it at me. I’ll take the hit.

In sum, please let’s lay the off Madeleine and Jimmy and maybe concentrate on the bigger issues of hoaxing, the damage that can be done, virtual reality, and a bazillion other more important things. And I think this thread is a superb forum for doing so, with a real event to use as a case study.

And hey, JimmyJimmy, just tell me if I need to have my Irish lads have a quiet word.

    Peace on y’all.

I’m still waiting on an answer….

Why should MINO not be outed? I really can’t see any legal repercussions for the outers and as far as the family argument goes, if he even has a family, only MINO is responsible for that…it even might help them.

Outing this guy will not take anything away form the great community he created, but it might make those who are encouraged to commit similar frauds take a second thought or two….

Jimmy: I think most people completely understand what you mean but responding to those who don’t have no interest in trying to understand how things looked from inside the fishbowl.

Jimm, you are both young (by my standards) and not of a geekling nature so set back for a few while an ancient one tells you about trolls.

Online communities have evolved so much over time from the era when if you had the 6/12/18$ an hour to pay Compuserv to connect you could join any special interest group or “SIG” through BBS’s and Fidonet and Usenet and MUDs/MOOs and all the way up to the present but one thing has remained constant – Trolls.

I believe that on the 8th day of creation the Internet Gods decreed “Let there be Trolls‡“. And they must serve a purpose since they still exist and as far as I know its still illegal to refuse to sell them Internet access here in the US.

Over time the Trolls were fought to a standstill through the cunning deployment of Moderators and Sysops and arming them with tools to allow them to control exactly who can and cannot add to a conversation. Over time many new people came online and they heard the legends of the trolls as the lore was passed down from new user to new user. Over time it became apparent that the Mods and Sysops had done TOO GOOD of a job and the new people online treated the troll tales as online-urban-legends the Trolls kept circling and watching for an opening.

Future generations will look back and see that the coming together of cheap web hosting, cheap storage space, open source software, and inexpensive bandwidth was like a perfect storm that would blow back in the trolls en masse.

The walls built up between the trolls and normal humans were torn down bit by bit as new Internet users and old left the fortified ‘Green Zones’ of their forums, moderated newsgroups, and other communities and struck out into the wild to carve a home for themselves in the cyber-wilderness. Services like Blogger, LiveJournal, and easy to install blogging software like WordPress gave the trolls the opening they needed.

Like many adaptive parasites, trolls can find a niche and a roll in almost any online environment and this new communication vector offered thousands of niches to fill. While on a BBS or a forum, the troll is unwelcome and disruptive, on many blogs the troll serves a purpose that – while not benign – at least serves the site owners interests at the same time he servers his own because the open nature of blogs means that instead of a tight knit community like those formed in many forums you ended up with a constantly revolving door of readers and contributors. The presence of trolls on a blog actually benefited the blogger by stirring up controversy where there was none and riling up new readers so much they felt a need to respond which fuels a blog’s popularity even more.

The blogger gets the attention he or she wants and craves and is willing to let some of that attention trickle down to the troll which helps keep it somewhat docile and manageable. This sort of Blogger-Troll symbiotic relationship is really the state of the world today when it comes to self created content.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of bloggers who avoid this whole issue by sticking to strict comment moderation and focusing on a very, very specific subject matter and ruthlessly stomping on off-topic communication.

A blog like ‘Mikey’s’ was a paradox. To a casual observer or one-time visitor it looked about as specific and tightly focused as could be…. closeted gay teenage hockey playing high-school student. Thats up there with the guy who blogs about only the Confederate pieces in his Franklin Mint Civil War Chess Set. But for those who came back and read the comments or the forum soon saw the blog posts were more like the discussion points they give teachers in their version of social studies textbooks and that the REAL communication was between visitors and not the ’sage the a stage’ model that is more common in the blog trolling world.

So Jimmy, when people appeared to drop out of the sky, make both unsubstantiated and inflammatory statements on a blog that you frequent its soo critical that you do not respond. Responses are like food for trolls and like a stray cat or lost alligator they will come back from more. They may seem cute and cuddly at first but over time they will be shedding all over or eating your puppies. Be flattered that a troll took the time to try your patience and self control like one of the Fae at an Irish Crossroad, but do not ever think that you can be in control of the situation.

The fact that trolls came around to the site at all is a little flattering and you should all be proud that you built a community that someone saw as valuable enough to want to warp or destroy through claims they could not back up with facts.

As you saw here and on the prior OutSports post, when someone wants to stir up crap, they will. Nothing you can say, no rock solid logic, no well, reasoned argument will satisfy the trolls because you and the troll have different goals. Your goal is to provide the facts and move on while his goal is to to keep you talking to him as long as possible like a $5.99 a minute telephone psychic. As long as only one of you is interested in reaching any kind of resolution there will never be one. The only solution is to let them talk into a vacuum. Do not respond to or try to placate a troll. Unlike normal people, a troll WILL stay exactly where its not wanted, but a troll WILL NOT stay where it is ignored.

Just remember the old adage; Feed a Fever, Starve the Trolls.

    ‡ troll v., n.

    1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase “trolling for newbies” which in turn comes from mainstream “trolling”, a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well- constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.

    2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that they have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand – they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, “Oh, ignore him, he’s just a troll.” (via trollfaq)

@ Jimmy Remember the key to golf is properly addressing the ball. “Well, hello ball!” ;)

@Chad I’m a Flyers fan so my view of the world may be a little warped. I’ll acknowledge that right upfront. Now, you are entirely within your rights to show up at the Wachovia and express your opinions by wearing a Sidney Crosby Pens jersey. You’re entitled to watch the game and root for the Pens. You should expect some heckling. I have a friend who has a season tix package with the Flyers so he can see the pens games. He busts the stones of some of the Flyers fans and they bust back. Nothing bad happens though because they have a mutual respect for each other.

Say you come in to the Wachovia and sit in the stands wearing your Crosby jersey at a game where the Flyers lose and shout “Flyers suck” all night. You may be right that they suck — the fans may even agree with you and may be shouting it too — but I still wouldn’t expect your night to go very well. You’re in our house. We don’t mind visitors or opposing points of view but respect our house. Hell, I’ve shouted some unkind things at my team over the years but I got 35 years of bleeding orange and black and sticking with them through the lousy times that’s earned me a little leeway imo. That’s a little different from someone showing up in another team’s colors at my house and being disrespectful.

For a lot of people doing the post mortem on Mikey’s blog, I don’t think they really understood what ending up happening there. It became a lot more than the blog. Yeah, Mikey’s posts were a jumping off point but the true fun was in the comments where Mikey never was. Then it moved into the forum.

The forum was a unique place. I know people say that there are lots of forums but those forums often have a topic that ties them together. There really was no topic that tied this together except that we all showed up and met each other through the blog. We used to talk about the most mundane stuff. (Hey David, I don’t know if you saw before the fourms closed that I did try the Woolite for Colors — my uni pants have never looked better!)

People talked about hockey and in some cases introduced people to the sport. People posted questions about coming out, what was going on in their life, what kinds of music they listened to. But mostly people just chatted with one another. Watching Jimmy and Potvin trade smartass comments could be hysterical fun. :)

Jimmy’s right that at different points everyone probably wondered if Mikey was for real. But Mikey ended up being such a little part of what happened there that it almost didn’t matter. The real stars of the show were all of the other posters and commentors that made up that place. After the forums closed, connections with a lot of people were broken. I miss reading their posts and hearing about them and it’s sad. That is the saddest part of this whole mess.

Hey Petey-Pete! Or as I saw somewhere: it’s apparently Saint Pete now. Saint? Really? Sainthood isn’t bestowed on you jus cause u stop wearin shoes dude … jus sayin. ;)

An old hockey coach once said: “If ifs n buts were candies n nuts, we’d all have a merry Christmas.”

Truer words could not be said – specially on a gay blog eh? Buts n nuts hehe. That’s what he said… ;)

What it means tho is regrettin the past. Things u wish u coulda/woulda/shoulda done differently. I know if I could go back in time I wouldn’t be sittin here writing this or any of the previous 10,000 comments (or insults – depending which camp you’re from).

I would have handled that fateful day/night/whatever it was differently. Nobody asked but I’ll tell u all anyway. I never should have posted that last one. NOT in the frame of mind I was in. You see, I’d been sittin on my ‘discovery’ for a few days before that final post…

If you remember, I couldn’t write a post to save my life (that is until my brazilian-brother Luke suggested a post about goalies. Man, then mikey-be-damned, I was all over that one!)

Anyway, I was stalling, trying to figure out what to do/say. Beggin Mikey to fess up to everyone else n not just me. His promises kept going by the wayside and when Brian n JD informed me they had no choice (they didn’t) but to shut down the blog, I panicked n wrote n posted before anyone could stop me. Again, I’ll say – under the circumstances – I still think the post was relatively well-written and MADE SENSE! But I digress…

In hindsight, I woulda begged our beloved hosts to give me one more day – I woulda even fibbed, telling them mikey was going to post an explanation. That would have given me time to write what I wrote. Walked away. Read it. Edit it… etc. etc. etc.

When I didn’t you saw the hurt I caused. Even a good (saintly) Irishman lashed out at me. I was only the messenger – but I was THE messenger and I should have taken a step back or two or twenty and thought about what was gonna happen once that post went up. What words to choose. How to choose. How to defuse…

Whatever. Live and learn as I’ve now been saying everyday since it seems. What still pisses me off – and ALWAYS will – isn’t the backlash or questions I received from the likes of you Pete. Far from it. As far as I was concerned, you had every right to question anything/everything, anyone/everyone.

It’s the johnny-come-lately’s who pissed me off and continue to do so. I still don’t see what business it was/is of theirs and no amount of carping by Chad n his CHADsmen are gonna change my mind. MYOB as my (saintly) mother would say. MYOB…

So yea, I think that covers it. I’m still surprised more questions bout our dearly departed Mikey weren’t thrown my way but w/e. It really wasn’t about him I guess. It was us, the residual roadkill, the wounded by the side of the highway who were on the menu. Who knew? I didn’t…

    Ifs n buts…

@JD ~ Man! Just one question (and with all due respect): Is this the way you talk in real life?! No wonder Brian’s nuts… ;)

Thanks (once again) for bringin a voice of reason (a geeky voice) but a voice of reason nonetheless…

I know feeding the trolls (or cats n alligators) doesn’t work but a sick fuck like me finds his thrills in some of the strangest places. I admit it hasn’t been nearly as fun as I thought it would be – it actually hasn’t been any fun at all – cept for the opportunity to communicate again with some of my old blog buddies n pals. Shit I miss that/them…

I’ll never miss the trolls. (cept maybe a long, lost bear) but I will miss the banter, the back n forths and the good laughs n times and even the tears sometimes. I’ll cherish those times and no amount of trolls can ever, EVER take that away.

So yea trolls. Come to our door, tell us our curtains don’t match the paint. Tell us our dog smells. I don’t care anymore. I (we) still have somethin you’re all evidently missing – a community. Who cares. For one another. It sucks to be you…

@Ed ~ I know I’m probably late to this part of the Flyer saga but I just heard about ’sand-gate’.

Apparently, the corridor running from Philly’s dressing room to the bench/ice was sprinkled with sand prior to the last game in Montreal. It resulted in a shit-load of Flyers having to have their skates sharpened and re-sharpened time n time again throughout the game.

Rumour also has it that back in the day when Montreal was playing LA in the final, someone broke into the King’s dressing room, measured all the sticks – which of course resulted in Montreal calling for a stick measurement and the resulting power-play goal to win Stanley.

Is this how come they’ve won so many more cups than anyone else?

I bring this to your attention for two reasons. One, perhaps Luke has joined the Habs because he likes their evil ways and he’s NOT the sweet guy we think he is… And b) Maybe Canadiums (or at least Canadiens) aren’t as nice as you make us out to be.

My theory (conspiracy?) is that Montreal knew the outcome was a foregone conclusion and were jus tryin out their new sand wedges … but I could be wrong. Shouldn’t the NHL investigate this? Where’s the clan when u need them? This is serious shit. This is hockey. I demand answers! Luke? How could you??? Merde… :(

Jimmy you are surprised that there aren’t more questions directed at YOU so that YOU can continue to have the stage and spout off all that YOU and YOU alone, know about Mikey?

You even go so far as to say, “It really wasn’t about him I guess.”

I guess you don’t get it. It was about Mikey and NOT YOU. It was about the connection so many people felt to Mikey, NOT YOU.

In an earlier post you told us how people begged YOU to intervene and post on Mikeys blog to give Mikey a break….really? No matter how much you tried, it wasn’t YOUR blog.

I read JD’s very accurate description of Trolls and their development on the internet and couldn’t help but see the attention seeking trouble maker in YOU Jimmy. I don’t think you have to be old to be a Troll by JD’s definition.

It might suprise you to know that many of us really enjoyed Mikeys blog except for YOU and your attempts to always grab the limelight.

You even muscled your way into Mikeys success writing for Outsports and then whinned on Mikeys blog when they wouldn’t publish your stuff.

If not for the fact that I trust JD and his assertion that Mikey is, in fact, a 40+ y/o man, I’d buy into the theory that he made up the 40+ y/o man story just to get away from you.

So, appologies to JD for this post. I know it goes against your advise to ignore the Trolls because you can’t talk sense to them.

Jimmy, Don’t beat yourself up over that last post. The post said what needed to be said and I think the writing was fine.

As someone who has as part of his profession the job to deliver some of the worst news ever written ([Mom & Dad], I’m deeply sorry but unfortunately there is nothing that we can do…) I can tell you that no matter how perfectly the message is crafted or how well delivered, the news still sucks, it will hurt and people will be angry. Unfortunately, they are often angry at the messenger.

The difference is that in my case delivering that news, while suxy, is part of territory and trade of my job. You know that going in. It doesn’t make it any better but at least you’re prepared for it. And if you can’t do it, you don’t work in that profession.

You never signed up for the load of shit you had to deal with. You got handed a mess and had to deal with it. As I said before, you had could’ve walked away but you acted like a man and did the right thing. Maybe it wasn’t perfect but it said what needed to be said and ultimately, the people that were part of that little community understood and hold no ill will.

No, Brian complains that I am wasting my time if I try to communicate online the way I do in person so he gets me to dumb it down a bit online.

As we discovered in the other discussion, if I speak in plain English and say exactly what I mean, it will be misunderstood.

As far as troll baiting, it can be wonderfully fun, but its important that one goes into it knowing that it will never actually end. And be sure to wash your hands after you finish.

I don’t know what to think about sand-gate Jimmy. I know NBC here reported the problem during the game and that ended up getting picked up by more media. The Flyers have been very hush-hush about it too acknowledging that skates had to be re-sharpened but nothing more. Very weiurd.

It could also be an over-zealous fan / employee. Philly fans singing the “Ole’ Ole’ Ole’” song as a tribute to the Habs probably insured we’re not going to get a Christmas card from the city of Montreal this year.

We need a deep throat here (twhs) to shed some light on this. ;)

Hey NYDad, I went back read through the first 50 posts on this thread. (All the posts before Jimmy’s first one.) He was mentioned by name in 17 of them. In 9 of those posts, he was directly accused of being involved.

@steve “ok, one last time, and this isn’t necessarily directed at Jimmy but rather the Outsports guys, or the blog hosters…. if you know the identity of MINO, why not post it?”

I was trying to let my reporting speak for itself, but you obviously didn’t read it clearly. Unless this person admits on the record to being Mikey, we aren’t printing a name. There exists the possibility (however small) that this person had his identity used by the Mikey hoaxster. I say that simply because this whole story has been bizarre and we aren’t going to compound it by printing a name we are not 100% certain about.

  168. #168 JD
    on May 26th, 2010 at 5:51 PM

Steve, its statements like yours just now that make me glad Jim did not publish the name.

Apparently in order to believe the truth *that OTHER people worked hard to discover on behalf of those affected*, you – personally – needhis name.

    That means that either:
You are deranged and need that to find and harm a person You are so paranoid that you think we are all trying to fool you You have an insanely inflated sense of entitlement that makes you honestly believe that YOU have some right to the fruits of other people’s labor You have been living a rock so long that you are honestly not aware of all the physical and economic harm that has been done to people who have had their identity outed online You are personally so far from the actual affected core community that sprung up around the blog that requesting something Jim said he would not provide is the only chance you have of learning this info. If this were not the case, I figure you would be asking someone who might know rather than repeating yourself over and over and over on blog.

Any one of those would be reason enough to think twice before revealing a name.

You can keep asking, but remember the awesome lesbian writer Rita Mae Brown’s famous quote about that.

  169. #169 JD
    on May 26th, 2010 at 5:53 PM

LOL That was an ordered list in that long paragraph that should read as:

    1. You are deranged and need that to find and harm a person
    2. You are so paranoid that you think we are all trying to fool you
    3. You have an insanely inflated sense of entitlement that makes you honestly believe that YOU have some right to the fruits of other people’s labor
    4. You have been living a rock so long that you are honestly not aware of all the physical and economic harm that has been done to people who have had their identity outed online
    5. You are personally so far from the actual affected core community that sprung up around the blog that requesting something Jim said he would not provide is the only chance you have of learning this info.  If this were not the case, I figure you would be asking someone who might know rather than repeating yourself over and over and over on blog.

I believe *you* all are paranoid… do you not believe in you own reporting? if you do, then you should release the name…

    who will be harmed?

JB, what proof? you mentioned it, but no links….

and, again if it is true, then there is absolutely no risk in releasing it and we can all ask “Mikey” himself rather than “Jimmy”…

@Steve Since someone mentioned to Catch a Predator, I’ll offer this example of the risks and problems associated with releasing a name. Ultimately, there is very little to be gained by releasing a name. Jim’s reporting and this thread haven’t answered the details of the case.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2008/06/nbc-resolves-la.html

“NEW YORK — NBC Universal has “amicably resolved” a $105-million lawsuit filed by a woman whose brother committed suicide during a taping of its controversial “Dateline NBC” series “To Catch a Predator,” both parties said today.

Bruce Baron, an attorney for Patricia Conradt, told The Times in an interview today that “the matter has been amicably resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.”

Conradt’s brother, Louis William Conradt Jr., a 56-year-old assistant county prosecutor in a Dallas suburb, shot himself in November 2006 when officers showed up at his house as part of a pedophilia sting arranged by “Dateline.”

Patricia Conradt sued NBC last July, claiming that the network interfered with police duties and then failed to protect her brother’s safety. ”

Jesus Steve, I wasn’t talking about the lawsuit dollars although that is a big incentive to be cautious.

I’m talking about the guy being confronted and deciding to swallow the barrel of a gun and adding an extra vent hole to the top of his head.

Do you think that if Jim published a name that everyone would say “oh nice” and no one would try reaching this guy?

I have no love lost for Mikey, especially after what he did to Jimmy, but I don’t want his suicide on my hands either.

@Amanda ~ “Did anyone other than jimmy (ugh) talk to these kids?”

Jimmy (ugh)? I haven’t heard those noises when my name’s mentioned for too long … too long.

    Um, what kids?

    @Rasta ~ Nooooooo.

@Steve ~ Dude, you’re my Aussie Steve right? Assuming so, let it go k? WTF are u gonna do anyway? Hop continents and spank him? Um, well maybe I WILL tell you then – as long as I can watch. His name is: Geeky Dweebler. He apparently resides in Plymouth but since Chrysler discontinued that line – I think it’s now known as Fiat. His address is 222 Two-Door Terrace. (Yogi Bear? Anyone? No? Shit!).

K so Aussie Steve. This is far more important than who Mikey might be. I need a name too. I was in my mammoth mall – NOT the world’s largest mall anymore but at least still bigger than the MOA (Fuck you Minnesota) (kidding) (really)… n neway, I’m a walkin thru the maul and I see this dude. He’s around my age (23 Canadium) (53 NY Dad) (Partly Cloudy) (Chance of Rain). He’s about my height (5′10) n my weight (150 – 160 (lbs dude, not kgs). He was wearing a blue track suit (skin tight) and carrying a Sydney 2000 backpack.

Now initially, I just thought he was only another cute Canadium boy. So many… but by creepin up on him (and his sister) (wow, if he wasn’t there, I woulda gone straight for sure), I heard his completely sexy – totally ball awakening Aussie accent…

Steve. He was by far the most beautiful boy I’ve EVER seen in my life! Serious. Hours later, while walking thru the maul chanting “Where’s my Aussie God?” Where’s my Aussie God?” I realized that I may never see him again…

    Unless…

Do you know him? He’s blonde, blue eyed n has a Sydney 2000 backpack. If u need anything more, jus let me know k? I’m almost sure I can get over Mikey if u help me out here. Thanks dude. You rock!

@Steve just so I’m clear we’re talking about the same guy. You’re talking about MINO, the 48 year old guy who pretended to be a 17 year old kid, his 15 year old brother and his 17 year old best friend to write a blog about being a HS hockey player. Sick fuck is a loaded term but maybe some time on the therapist couch with a little cocktail courtesy of big pharma might do him a world of good.

To use the crunchy granola phrasing of the mental health community, yeah I’m concerned that he has issues and I’d be worried he isn’t in a good place. Confronted by the good people of this blog hunting him down for whatever vengeance and self-satisfying needs they have, I’d be concerned about a risk of self-harm.

My comment about me feeling responsible was meant figuratively. That is, if I was in a situation where I knew who he was and I shared that with some of the upstanding posters here, I’d have some issues of conscience of my own to address afterwards.

Luke, forget about all that. Do me one more favour … As my musical tastes often amuse you – look up n listen to “The Tragically Hip”. I don’t know why I kept forgettin to tell u bout them but not only are they Canadium … they are fuckin awesome! Listen n enjoy…

P.S: I love pink floyd too btw.

“Who would be harmed if the name was revealed? How about his wife (he seems to have one, based on the evidence) and kids (a byproduct of marriage, so they may exist)?”

Im not trying to have a go at you for this Joe , and im not calling for his name, because frankly i dont care anymore, but i do heartily disagree on that point about who would be harmed. If he has a wife, is she being harmed more by living a lie, or more by finding out the truth?
lets say he was having an affair. doesnt she have a right to know? doesnt anyone in that circumstance desverve to know? this is the same principle.
trust me, in dilemmas like this you always choose the truth, because the truth is always the right thing, and always the less harmful in the long run.

    ditto, my aussie brethren ^^^^

and, more importantly, revealing his name might, just might, deter future fraud…. it’s the same principle that the entire penal system is based on….

I know all of you guys (and gal) are truly empathetic and kindhearted people, but you (collectively) are not thinking rationally….

The 2 people above me have got it right.

The reason (that im guessing) outsports hasn’t released his name is because they dont want to take the legal risk in the slim chance theyre wrong. it would open themselves up to a libel case. i understand where theyre coming from, but i think the further into the abyss we send this creep the better.

  202. #202 Ed
    on May 27th, 2010 at 11:06 AM

@Aussieguy I don’t think the issue is whether his wife has a right to know. I think the issue is whether his wife deserves to find out by having her life profiled on this blog. Once his name is out there, her name (if there is a her), his kids (if there are kids) name’s are right there with it.

Once published it can’t be retracted. Even MSM is looking more closely these days at what information they publish because stories don’t die and families face the stigma of the issue forever because the entire story is a google search away.

@Steve/Chad and any other person who MUST know Mino’s name- I’m getting tired of this question being asked every 10 mins. I’ll tell you his name. It’s D.B. Cooper. Feel free to google him and if you track him down please let the proper authorities know.

@Jimmy- Still on the Aussie guy thing huh? Don’t you think this whole cheating on JT thing is going to get back to him? Remember what he did to you last time when he found out.

P.S. I was in a burger joint yesterday n they had a big autographed pic of Glen Sather hangin on the wall. Yea, Slats jus sittin there with that smug smirk n stogie stickin out of his yap … It made me want to punch him…

@Potvin A Rangers fan saying Flyers suck. Its like hearing the choirs of heaven chanting their heavenly chorus. :)

@Jimmy I don’t know what kind of weather you are having in your part of Canadia but we topped 90F/32C/305K here yesterday and today. That officially marks the beginning of one of my favorite seasons: shirtless guys in shorts season. :) Tonight (naturally I work) we’re supposed to get some rain so that will make it wet shirtless guys in shorts time — which has its own merits.

@Swimmerdude We’re all still around. Over Maddys, BiDNY and a few other of the blogs. We just broke into smaller operating cells that cross-communicate, lol.

You do realize marryin a gay dude is jus fraught with problems right? I don’t see it lasting. Tell u what, u let me marry JT n I’ll see if his sister is willing to give u a go. I remember somebody insisting you’re bi hehe ;)

@Ed ~ Yea, while your weather is a lil too warm for this guy, I’d still be willing to trade. It’s tryin to be nice here but it jus can’t quite do it…

Thanks for lookin after JT while in Philly – but I’m sure he’s gonna be plenty satisfied after leavin your fair city. He might even be haulin around a big silver cup by that time. Remember, send all your best karma for Saturday night’s tilt. I do believe it will be the Flyer’s best chance at makin this a series…

Yea, I think the only people around here who want your Fly’s to win are u n Joe. The rest of us have sense. I think the only people who like Lindros are Av fans. I mean he was really the architect of Colorado’s Stanley winning team wasn’t he?

I always thought his lil brother Brent was cute. He had a TV show for awhile after (forced) retirement n was pretty. Good.

Orange n black n never go back? How bout red n black n great in the sack? That’d be my Johnnie …

Did u see my new gravatar? It’s kinda hard to make out but Blackhawk Dave sent me it … it’s a moose attacking a fighter jet. I thought my last one with the decapitated moosehead was a bit too dramatic. I don’t think drama is condoned on OS is it?

@Jimmy Man was I working. We had it all last night. Non-stop from 6:30p to 2:30a. I was supposed to be done at 11p but we were so busy we couldn’t get back to quarters to hand off the truck.

The video I watched did say top 10 Stanley Cup moments. Maybe they figured “those flyers fans won’t care so just throw whatever in there. They’ll just be happy we’re doing a video.” And we are. :)

Yep pretty much the Nordiques got the better end of the deal. Its kind of ironic that had he signed with Nordiques, he’d only have spent 3 or 4 years there before they moved to Denver. That whole deal still makes me cringe.

Brett is a cutie but what is it with the Lindros boys and their noggins – both of them seem to have ones made of glass.

On a tangent (me go off on tangents?), one of the things that has come out of Iraq / Afghanistan is a lot new medicine / medical approaches. War always brings advances in medicine because it brings advances in injuries. :( Vietnam was the same. Sigh.

Anyway, because of the IEDs, there have been a lot of studies in Traumatic Brain Injuries (First change they made was give concussion a cooler sounding medical name that had a acronym to go with it.) They’ve developed a quantitative system for evaluating the severity of a concussion (or TBI). If you do a baseline test/ evaluation before any injury, you can conduct some simple tests to compare it to the baseline and get an very accurate sense of how bad the brain injury is. There is talk now about having HS athletes get a baseline TBI test so they can truly evaluate concussions / TBI over their career and have a solid indicator when it is too dangerous to continue playing.

@Luke You are so right. It is so common for us (people in general) to walk by others that need help. A friend pointed out to me one day to stop, slow down and watch and you’d be amazed how people you walk by each day that could use a little hand: a door held, help picking up something, tons of little things. We get wrapped up in our worlds and lose track of this opportunities to make life easier on someone.

You were probably talking more about work though. That’s another frustration for me. I hate hearing the words: not my job. Yes, there are circumstances where you don’t want to enable a slacker. Sometimes though something isn’t getting done because someone is overwhelmed a little helping hand would go a long way.

So let out steam, my friend. That’s why we’re here. :)

Btw there’s also something that I’m not good at all doing: pointing fingers. I was raised learning that finger pointing was something really despicable. But it is something you have to do at work.

Some times things can turn into a real witch hunt and you have to protect yourself and throw others under the bus. And I hate doing that even if I’m right. I’ve taken heat for other before but some times it’s too risky.

It is a beautiful day here. It is 74F with sun and a light breeze. I could smell the honeysuckle as I was driving this morning. It is a perfect spring day.

With that being said, best of luck to both teams tonight and may the best team win!

    Go Flyers!

Oh and I met someone I didn’t think existed today: a blackhawks fan that didn’t think Toews was that attractive at all and was just an “ok hockey player.” She told me Kane has it all over him. So now I can say I’ve heard it all. :)

Just wanted to say a few things, and then I’ll go back to lurking again.

To anyone who has managed to read this far, first – congrats, second – this (the last 60-100 comments or so) is what the comments area at “Mikey’s” blog were like. You now know one of the things that we loved about the blog and why we miss it a lot. The comments area was the one place that helped me lift my spirits and feel better about things. (My life kinda really sucks right now, I’m still grieving over the loss of Brendan and Mark, {as well as others since then,} and the fun and affection everyone showed at the blog greatly helped with keeping my spirits up.) The forum might have shaped up to be similar, but unfortunately was not given the time to fully develop. (Or even weather the storm it was created in, but that is a different issue.)

@Jim and Cyd – thanks for posting this and your work here at Outsports. It is appreciated.

@JD – thanks for the Troll thing! Both informative and hysterical. (Also, thanks for all the stuff you and Brian did for the Nation. It was greatly appreciated by me and many others!)

@ the Nation commentors – thanks for all being here and doing what you do! I was having a not-so-great day (again) and getting to ‘hear’ all your voices again has been a great help. Hugs and appreciation to you all!

@ the detractors and naysayers – Thpbpbpbpbpbpt!

    @ hockeyiscanada – I tried to send this to you through Maddie’s email, but I’m not sure if it got through to her. (You don’t need to tell me if you do what I am suggesting or not, just wanted to pass this thought and encouragement along.) At the blog, you had briefly mentioned the BB Internship. I hope all this has not thrown you off of the goals you talked about there and that you apply. (Deadline is 06/04/10, I think. If you haven’t already, please check the website.) Just wanted to mention it. {If you want to contact me more directly, Maddie’s got my email addy.}

Thanks for reading yet another comment.
Here’s hoping we break 350 this time! :)

Best wishes and good health to all!

    Later!

@GayHermit Good to hear from you! You’ve been missed and here is a hug right back at you. I’m sorry you’re having a not-so-good day.

A lot of the same “voices” still meet over at Maddy’s blog and BiDudeNY has put up a forum of his own. Nothing will ever be quite like what we had but a lot of good people still hang out there. We have some great people that excel at bringing out smiles on the worst of days so come on over and get a heaping helping of our hospitality and set a spell with us. :)

The preceding message was brought to you by “Ed Clampett” ;)

Yea, so I watch Beverly Hillbilly re-runs. So What? What’s wrong with that? Granny Rawks!

@Hermit ~ yea, I’ll contact u for sure. We’ll catch up soon. Peace.

@Ed ~ 75 n sunny you say? Go suckle my honey asshole! It’s the return of Monsoon Mary in these parts. AND IT SUCKS! I’m leavin for Jasper in the morning. Gonna put in two solid days of golf on some unbelievably beautiful courses up in the Rockies (if it ain’t snowin) – and of course, chase some moose around. Jasper’s full of them thar mooses.

Then back to work to swat gorilla’s with wings. Shit … :(

@Luke ~ Delusional can be good. Embrace your delusions. Ed has. He thinks the Flyers are gonna win the coupe hehe ;)

@Blackhawk Dave ~ U don’t actually even hafta leave Seattle to sample Canadium boys dude. We’s flock to Seattle … but if u do, remember – don’t let the beer bite u in the butt. It’s actual beer Dave, NOT that gargled gutter piss u guys brew.

As (J)ed Clampett would say: Weeel Doooggy my holiday’s done! It’s been fun (most of the time) comin on here n shootin the shit with most of the old herd. Glad to see all’s quiet on the moronic front. Now, can’t we all jus get along? Love y’all – most of u lots! Peace out ~ Jimmy :)

Oh n I wanted to share a lil tidbit of a personal nature. One which will confirm I’m an ass – as if there was anyone out there still unsure hehe …

In an earlier (ignored) email I sent to our former blogster doofus, I just HAD TO tell him something I had planned for a while…

Actual members of MN would remember, Mikey was a huge admirer of one Robert Gordon Orr of the Boston Bruins. You should also remember that I proudly possess an autographed, game-used hockey stick from #4 … neway – in order to be a dick, I made sure ‘Mikey’ knew I had every intention of giving that valuable piece of lumber to him as a graduation present … and I really did too.

Now, if that’s not punishment … ;) Peace

    @my Canadian brother,

Drive safely and be careful with those moose on the road. Have a great time, I’ve seen pictures of Jasper and it’s amazing. You’re an amazing guy. You really are my brother.

Don’t forget to check your e-mail.

And remember: ‘Mikey’ can only take hockey from you if you let him. Good move with the hockey stick.

    Peace and thanks for everything,

    Luke

I wonder if “Mikey” actually is a fan of Orr or did he just steal that from someone?

Stay in touch, Jimmy. That’s an order. ;-)

Hockey is Canada, you must be happy bout your boy’s team winning. 1 down 3 to go.

Now if you would just acknowledge my existance would be nice – sigh. Maybe I was not enough of a Toews fan early on and thus the silence :)

Hope all is going good for you Jimmy. I know you’ve been through a lot with this whole thing, and well hope all goes well for you here on out. IF you ever want to make contact, a post would be nice, or an email as I did formspring you and speak with madeline a few times.

Quick recap of game-Too many penalties for Hawks, you’ve shown Philly you mean business, now settle down. Hawks scoring with everyone-not relying on big guns-very important, anyone can score. Philly looses confidence in the net already, not good for goalie, he will be rattled. Things look good so far.

Like he was rattled when Montreal scored 5 on him in the last series? Leighton was pulled to send a message to the rest of the team to clean up their act.

I second the sentiment Maddy. When people comment that they don’t know how everyone got so attached to some hockey blog by a “17 year old”, you just have the read the comments. The bouncing comments back and forth between people, the rambling discussions and inside jokes — that was the true Mikey blog.

Well isn’t that a big gay mystery!! Not uncommon though, I’m sure there is a lot of older men posing as younger guys online. I feel bad for the kids who believed in him though, that’s the worst part. ;) peace

well, outsports, you havent totally made this guy go away. he has posed on facebook as a kid from Edina High School: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000812262659

(profile registered under his gmail email address)

  277. #277 Joe Guckin
    on Aug 16th, 2010 at 1:09 AM

There’s no email address listed, since his info is private unless you’re a friend. So how do you know it’s him unless you’ve friended him (under false pretenses, I might add)?

    on Aug 16th, 2010 at 10:48 AM

    Joe Guckin,
Im sorry but you didnt think your response to Chad through very well. You do not need to access a profile to know what email address someone is using, as you can search in facebook for a profile via an email address. try it. As someone who used to corrospond via email with “mikey” when he used a gmail address when his blog started, i can confirm this account is in fact registered under the same email address used by “mikey”.
This is quite a disturbing development indeed

    on Aug 17th, 2010 at 1:47 AM

Well, I don’t enter email addresses into search engines to find profiles, on Facebook or anywhere else. Even if I wanted to, I don’t know the gmail address in question. But at this point, I don’t really care. If anyone’s really THAT concerned that some illegal activity is going on regarding that person, instead of continually posting about it here, CALL THE DAMN COPS ALREADY.
