Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was asked how he felt about Portugal legalizing same-sex marriage:
The Portuguese man that I am, I try to keep informed about what is happening in my country. I know the law was passed and the comment it deserves is that we must respect the choices made by anyone, because, after all, all citizens should have the exact same rights and responsibilities.
Not sure which “choice” he’s talking about, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he meant the choice to marry whomever someone chooses.
Hat tip to Perez Hilton.

Since obviously his heart is in the right spot, I’d interpret “choice” as the choice of marrying or not marrying in this context and not the “choice” of a sexual preference.

I don’t see what’s wrong with saying choice.
We all need a choice, it’s a human right.

Also, note, his interview was given in Portuguese. There could be some slight translation misinterpretations.

I’m still reeling from the words “Hat tip to Perez Hilton”!!

When you go back to his original interview in Portuguese, that phrase translates more closely to “possibilities/options;” which is true, legalized marriage equality creates more options and possibilities that were woefully lacking in Portugal (and even more woefully lacking in the US). I don’t think he was calling sexuality a choice. For as much as a tool as I think Ronaldo is (and the rest of his article/interview attests to it, I think he comes off more intelligently in this response.

Choice is the right word unless one wants an arranged shotgun wedding.
