With the announcement today that Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman is developing a show with A&E about celebrities coming out of the closet, I’m left wondering if athletes might be a part of that. Howard has helped many celebrities and singers come out, but he has also virtually cornered the market on athletes coming out over the last 10 years, guiding Esera Tuaolo, Sheryl Swoopes, John Amaechi and Rosie Jones. He’s also repped Martina Navratilova. It’ll be interesting to see what role sports and athletes have on his new show.

Turning the coming-out process into a “reality” show — so sleazy. Seems to me that the “celebrities” coming out will be the same fame whores desperately trying to achieve (or extend) their 15 minutes of infamy that appear on the other shows. No one of importance will do this show, if it even gets to the stage where it’s filmed and aired.

And how will the identities of the participants be kept under wraps? I can’t iamgine they’ll be able to keep them secret.

Joe G, I agree 100%. I hate “reality TV” and the fact that people (especially young people and supposedly intelligent gay men) buy into it and think it’s somehow more “real” than your average scripted hour makes me very sad. “Reality” shows are the worst sort of manufactured drama — at least stuff like “Lost” or “CSI” has actors who can actually, y’know, ACT. And if someone above the “D” list agrees to do this show I’ll be shocked.

It looks like an interesting show to be on…I have tried to find publicists with experience in sports but it is a difficult road as a gay athlete has very limited options if they are out…
