Isiah Thomas supports gay marriage equality

It seems strange that the New York Knicks have hired Isiah Thomas to be a consultant. Not only is this the same team he ran into the ground as team president for 4 1/2 years (head coach for the last two of those years), and that was ordered to pay a woman $11.6 million as a result of a sexual harassment lawsuit against Thomas, but Thomas is still the head coach at Florida International, and plans to keep coaching at the school. Is it possible to work for both a pro and college team at the same time? Is this allowed by the NBA and NCAA?

But I’ll leave all of that for basketball fans to worry about. I’m here to praise Isiah Thomas. He and his son Joshua, a DJ, have posed for the NOH8 Campaign, adding their support to the fight for same-sex marriage and equality for all. The NOH8 Campaign was started in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8 in California in 2008 — the same Prop 8 that was declared unconstitutional by a federal judge this week.

Obviously, the more people that make their support for equality known, the better. But when the support comes from a member of basketball’s Hall of Fame, it deserves a little extra attention.

I am pretty sure anyone who can kiss Magic Johnson during an NBA game would secure in his sexuality.

I’m not sure this is a great endorsement. It would be kind of like having Rod Blagojevich’s endorsement for your clean government campaign.

Really Joe? You read the guy in the first paragraph and then say you’re writing to praise him in the second? Really? Anyway…considering the state of Black homophobia we definitely need high profile black athletes coming out in support of the No H8 campaign. I particularly like this one because its generation with his son supporting as well. Kudos to both of them.

Actually Isiah Thomas’s first son is gay I believe. There was a report about it in the New York Post a couple of years ago. This may explain Thomas’s position on marriage equality.

I wrote to praise him for posing for the NOH8 campaign, that’s all. But I also felt I should mention the fact that the Knicks hired him, since that news also had just come to light.

As a Knick fan the best thing that could happen is for Isiah to quit Knicks management (where he is and always has been god awful) and join the gay/human rights movement as a full-time advocate (where he seems to have a good handle on the situation). ;-)
