Another in a series of our favorite articles from 10 years of Outsports is a 2002 profile of Dave Kopay, the gay sports pioneer who came out in the mid-1970s after a long NFL career. The story showed that Kopay is still as relevant as ever.

The story also was the catalyst for Dave and I becoming best friends. Though we both lived in L.A., our paths had not crossed until Outsports started and one of Dave's friends suggested a piece on him as he was turning 60. This led to many a day spent at Dave's watching sports and talking about everything from athletics to politics to religion to hot jocks. He is a role model for every gay athlete and it was cool to see young jocks interact with him this summer at the Gay Games in Cologne. For me, profiling Dave was one of the most rewarding things I have done for Outsports.
