We were thrilled to find out we’ve been nominated for GLAAD’s Outstanding Digital Journalism Article award for our ground-breaking article, “Former college football captain was openly gay.” The article chronicles the story of Brian Sims, the defensive tackle who came out to his Bloomsburg University football team in 2000. Since the release of the article Sims has become an empowered gay-rights activist working with lawyers (he is an attorney himself) and college athletic departments to tear down anti-gay inequality in the legal system and sports.

Also great to see is that three of the five finalists are sports-related, the other two coming from ESPN.com: LZ Granderson's column, "McMackin's Slur Reveals Larger Problem"; And John Buccigross' story about Brendan Burke, "We Love You, This Won't Change a Thing."

Complete list of nominees after the jump.
