Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current Fox NFL analyst Troy Aikman and his wife of 10 years Rhonda have called it quits.
“This has been a difficult decision for Rhonda and me, but after 10 years of marriage we have decided to separate,” Aikman tells The Dallas Morning News. “We remain deeply committed to our children and respectfully ask that you honor our family’s privacy during this period of adjustment.”
The “Is Troy Aikman gay?” questions have been asked for 20 years since Aikman joined the Cowboys. He has denied them and they have died down in the 10 years since he was married and bore two children by Rhonda. They will likely start again with this news. I don’t know what Aikman’s orientation is, nor do I care (absent a public coming out). He’s a good analyst, seems like a good guy so wish him (and his ex) well regardless of whether he’s gay, straight, bi, questioning or a closeted Redskins fan.

What is it about guys like Aikman and Mike Piazza that people make up these gay rumors? Is it that they have a certain look? Get married later in life? Are gay guys just really attracted to them, and engage in wishful thinking?
I’ve read some of the archived stories about the original rumors about Aikman before he got married, and there is just no evidence whatsoever. Just innuendo. Baffles me why the “he is gay” rumor has stuck to Aikman.

Troy Aikman would never have been “gay” in any culturally understandable sense. Homosexual, yes. Of course homosexuals are able to function in hastily-arranged end-of-career cover marriages.

It seems to me that rumors persist because there is something to them. There are hundreds of NFL quarterbacks who have never been rumored to be gay; a handful (Aikman, Steve Young, a couple others) *have* — repeatedly and consistently. It’s true in any business: Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise were the 2 biggest movie stars in the world at roughly the same time; I’ve never once heard a Hanks-is-gay rumor but Cruise, on the other hand…

It is fairly well established fact that when a person of national
interest marries his secretary (a la Rock Hudson) or his
publicist (one of Britain’s royals) it pretty well indicates his
sexual orientation. And Troy easily fits in this category–it’s
just a shame the dude won’t come out. But keep up the
good work boys.

Does it matter? Why? Leave the guy alone. You know, most of us developed our own time table. Allow the guus who have yet to come out, or not come out, their own timetable. And again, why does it matter at all? The only people we should worry about in this closeted, denial sense are the active homophobes like Ted Haggard and Bachman. Otherwise, leave the other people to what we would all ask: our own time table and our own lives. Lets not be desperately anxious, here.
