Outsports’ 100 most important moments in LGBT-sports history

When we look back years from now at 2011, it will be akin to what 1947 was for black athletes. That was the  year Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. This year we’ve seen an unprecedented number of gay athletes come out of the closet, and we’ve seen even more straight athletes stand up against homophobia. If there is a tipping point in the long history of gay sports, 2011 is it.

Yet few know the deeply rich history that has led to this groundbreaking year. There are even key moments in gay-sports history that we at Outsports hadn’t heard about or had forgotten.

Over the rest of the summer we will release our list of the 100 most important moments in gay-sports history. We have focused on specific moments, whether they be a few minutes or a day, that have shaped the course of our history; Many of the faces of those moments will be familiar to our readers.

We focused on what we consider to be the “gay-sports movement.” There were certainly amazing gay and lesbian athletes before the Stonewall riots in 1969, but there wasn’t a push for gay equality in sports until after that fateful day in New York City. Our moments range from July 1, 1969 to July 1, 2011.

We could not have developed the list without the help of several people who dug deep into their archives for many of these moments: Gay wrestling guru Gene Dermody; Longtime gay-sports advocate and current head of the GLSEN Sports Project Pat Griffin; Author and high school soccer coach Dan Woog; and author Patricia Nell Warren, who has written about the history of gay athletes for Outsports for years. Over the course of the next two months we will highlight their personal lists of key moments.

With only 5 or 6 moments out I can already see where we are going. We put all the women at such low numbers token women if you ask me. All the male who came out so much later probably end up very high. The women have shown so much courage and I see some with such low numbers This probably will be a very American list but think of an icon who influenced gay and lesbian people all over the world.

I don’t know if it’s on the list, but I believe the creation of the San Francisco Gay Community Softball League should be on it. The first gay sponsored league in the country back in 1973. It grew from 6 teams to 20 in a few short years and spawned the first sport sections of several gay papers. By 1978, the Opener drew 2,000 fans and the annual Gays vs. Cops game drew 8,000 fans. Mayor Moscone threw out the first pitch of the 1978 season. What was unique about the C.S.L. it allowed non-gays to participate without a quota system. In the 1978 season, the winner of the CSL championship was invited to the 2nd Gay World Series, but was kicked out because they had too many non-gays on the roster. This was at the time of Anita Bryant and California State Senator John Briggs who had an initiative to ban all gay teachers. The team I played on had non-gay Vietnam Vets,a couple of City Firemen,a doctor, a couple of teachers and they brought their wives, girlfriends, parents and kids to our games… and brought out the fine Sportsmanship within the league. Mayor Moscone gave the team a Citation for the diversity of the team that he said represented the great diversity found in the City of San Francisco.

Three important events gay benchmarks in the sport of rowing:

    1) Stonewall Regatta-The DC Strokes Rowing Club, DCSRC, proudly presents the Stonewall Regatta now in its 18th year. It is the only annual GLBT sponsored rowing event in the US. Stonewall Regatta began in 1994 during preparations for Gay Games IV in New York City. About a year before the games, DCSRC discovered there was no event for gay and lesbian rowers….The event was such a success that DCSRC decided to bring it home to Washington, D.C., where it has since been held every June.

    2) First openly gay crew wins gold at US Rowing Master’s Nationals: http://www.metroweekly.com/news/?ak=4448

    3) 2011 was DC Strokes Rowing Club’s 20th season on the water.

And the link for 30 takes you back to this main page. Sorry to be so naggy, but these stories are all fascinating, and I’m just working my way up the list. :)

Well, you left out the launch of Outsports, the first real forum for LGBT sports fans to connect and get relevant news; the Gay Games tackling WADA anti-doping protocols on behalf of POZ athletes; and Donna Rose becoming the first trans athlete in elite wrestling and winning a national title, but all in all a comprehensive and valuable list. Kudos and thanks to you all for making it happen.

Roger, this was a first pass. There is more to come in an even broader series – and we’re very excited about it!

Why is there no mention of Wade Davis’ coming out? In fact, this ex-Washington Redskin is hardly mentioned at all on this website. What gives? Why isn’t Wade Davis’ life story of interest enough to address here.

Why isn’t Wade Davis’ life story of interest enough to address here

How is it that the two major NFL player databases don’t even list him? Most of the hits for “Wade Davis” on Google are for a white baseball player.

Jim and Cyd rely on tips, did it ever occur to you to e-mail them and say “Hey, this might be a cool story”?
