Denver Broncos backup quarterback Brady Quinn is backtracking from comments made to GQ about his teammate Tim Tebow. Quinn was among a bunch of NFL players and observers quoted by Michael Silver about the meteoric rise of Tebow this season. Here is the Quinn quote that has gotten a lot of attention:
“If you look at it as a whole, there’s a lot of things that just don’t seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I’ll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?”
Quinn also suggested that Tebow leapfrogged him on the depth chart and started for Kyle Orton because that’s what the fans wanted. After his quotes were made public, Quinn took to Twitter today to backtrack:
“The comments attributed to me in a recent magazine article are in NO WAY reflective of my opinion of Tim and the Broncos,” Quinn wrote. “Tim deserves a lot of credit for our success and I’m happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate.
“That interview was conducted three months ago, and the resulting story was a completely inaccurate portrayal of my comments. I have addressed my disappointment with the writer and have reached out to Tim to clear this up. I apologize to anyone who feels I was trying to take anything away from our team’s or Tim’s success this season.”
Silver, for his part, wonders what the fuss is about, tweeting:
“The people ripping [Quinn] 4 his comments in GQ have it wrong. He was honest and not bitter at all. We talked for 50 minutes and he was respectful. . . . He was put in a uniquely weird position that would have rattled most quarterbacks. I thought he handled it well. He’s a standup guy,” Silver wrote.
We all know how ultra-religious Tebow is, and Quinn is not shy about his beliefs, often tweeting the name of a Biblical passage. He is not claiming he was misquoted, so I am not sure why Quinn felt a need to backtrack. He was right — there is nothing “humble” about someone who has made “Tebowing” part of the language.

on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 12:16 AM
Could we at least set the straight that Tebow didn’t make “Tebowing” a part of the language? It’s not his fault, and there are plenty of other athletes that overtly pray during all types of sporting events. Celebrity is a curse as much as a blessing.
What a pointlessly snide thing to say?
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 12:31 AM
Maybe we should make a new trend/meme called “Quinning”, which would be retracting and apologizing for something stupid you say less than 2 hrs after it is published?
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 12:50 AM
Tim Tebow is not responsible for the term “Tebowing.” From what I have heard of him, he is very humble in directing all the glory and honor to Jesus Christ, Who alone deserves it.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 8:23 AM
I like Brady Quinn’s alternative of praying in private with his teammates – assumedly those who wish to pray.
And it should be done with those teammates on an individual basis so that no other feels compelled to join in a group event that might otherwise exclude or alienate them from the team.
In fact meeting with individuals on the team one-on-one (or outside the team for that matter who express an interest) in a private place conforms to the intent of the biblical scripture; not public hypocrisy.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Every time I wonder how an asshat like Santorum could be getting votes, I get reminded that the country is filled with asshats like Malcolm.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Jordan,
I was going to say the same thing. It’s sad there’s so many deranged people like Malcolm, many of whom put down the Bible long enough to go vote.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Ostentatious religiosity is not humble. Just saying.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
I love when people get in trouble for saying something and then backtrack by saying “they were taken out of context” or “misquoted” or something. Not sure how the story was an inaccurate portrayal of his comments. He probably got some pushback from the Broncho’s management.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 3:32 PM
What is wrong with what Malcolm said? Calling Malcolm deranged and an asshat for saying “From what I have heard of him, he is very humble in directing all the glory and honor to Jesus Christ, Who alone deserves it.” is uncalled for. It would be one thing if Malcolm talked about how being gay is a sin and said gays are going to hell, yada, yada, yada. But he didn’t so now you’re just being rude for no reason.
Seems like Quinn is just jealous of Tebow.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 3:57 PM
I don’t know if Malcolm believes that everyone is made in God’s image and Gods doesn’t make mistakes, or if he believes that being gay and eating shellfish are abominations. Until he declares the latter, he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
Maybe I’m naive but I believe there are Christians who use religion for the right reason – to strengthen themselves and bind humanity. They just aren’t the ones standing at lecterns preaching hate.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Seriously? One overrated NFL QB douchebag going after another overrated NFL QB douchebag. Zzzzzzz.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 5:47 PM
I understand what quinn was saying about tebow’s humility, if he said that. But, what’s the difference between tebow bowing and soccer guys doing the cross sign or any other sportsman pointing to the sky. Tebow like any spiritual sportsman has his own way of praying and it’s not for a fraction of seconds. Did it occur to anyone that the camera’s are everywhere on the field and tebow prays at some point during the game. I’m pretty sure that he prays in private and with his teammates. Where did quinn or silver(if he misquoted quinn) get the idea that tebow only prays on the field in front of the camera and somehow they think that he doesn’t pray with his teammates or in private. No one will have any video evidence that tebow prays in private b.c it’s private. It’s really stupid for guys like quinn or plummer to critcize his praying method, as if that’s going to help tebow make better plays. If those guys care for broncos success they should criticize and advice tebow on things related to football, not be offended or tired of his praying. It’s ridiculous how people think tebow is pushing his religion, he does not preach for an hour or do a ned flander b.f a game.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 6:19 PM
Ace,
How is it uncalled for? If instead of ‘Jesus Christ’ he said the ‘Great Flying Spaghetti Monster,’ most everyone would be in agreement that he is completely nuts. Just because he believes some invisible man in the sky sent down his son to be tortured and killed doesn’t mean it’s valid and doesn’t mean everyone has to bow down to him and respect him because of his precious faith (or rather, what it really is, lack of reason).
Let me quote from the genius Malcolm: “all the glory and honor to Jesus Christ, Who alone deserves it.” I only hope that one day my descendants will not have to be subjected to nonsense like this. The very thesis of Christianity is that we are all scum and can only be saved by worshipping the sky dictator and his son (which sounds an awful lot like North Korea). But thankfully, religion is a dying brute and its tyranny over the mind (and body) will one day end.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 7:56 PM
@WJoaquin It’s uncalled for because the guy didn’t attack anyone or put down anyone. Some people are Christians, or Muslims, or Jewish, or Atheist, etc, etc. If you don’t believe what they do then fine, but that’s no reason to start calling them names for what he said.
If you want to get into a discussion about theology and what is or is not the real thesis of Christianity we can. But all because you believe differently than someone is no reason to call them outside of their name for it. So if someone says I’m a Muslim, are you going to go in on them and start telling them that they are stupid for believing in a “sky dictator.” If so that makes you no better than the fake Christians that tell people they are going to hell.
We don’t share the same beliefs but I’m not going to call you an asshat because of it.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 7:58 PM
Thank you, WJoaquin; extremely well put. Ace is quite misguided for saying you and Jordan are being “rude for no reason.” I see nothing rude about calling out a religious nutcase on his religious nonsense, especially when he’s projecting it on a sports website.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 8:13 PM
@Ace: Did you read anything I wrote? He did put everyone down. The statement “all the glory and honor to Jesus Christ, Who alone deserves it” is incredibly demeaning to everyone who doesn’t believe in the nonsense that he does. It represents what the ultimate message of Christianity is: that all humans are bad and the only way to be good is to praise and worship some vainglorious God. I get rather annoyed by insane Christians like Malcolm constantly telling me that I’m no good and that I’m not truly deserving of my life unless I get down on my knees and praise Jesus. If Christians loathe their own humanity than that’s their problem, but I’m tired of them getting on their soapboxes and telling the rest of us that we should, too.
@Jake: Thank you. It’s good to know that there are rational people out there.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 8:51 PM
@WJoaquin I read what you wrote and as I stated before I do not believe that his statement is putting everyone down. I don’t know who it was that told you that you were no good all because you don’t believe in Jesus, but they were wrong. I don’t want you to think that everyone who talks about Jesus holds the belief that you are less than and are going to hell unless you become like them.
There are certain kinds of church’s that invite members of different faiths to join them. And they don’t preach that it’s their way or the highway, they talk about just being a good person. They are able to do it without putting down people who believe differently then they do because they honestly don’t believe that Jesus is the only way.
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 9:32 PM
@Ace
I don’t know if you’ve read the Bible, but Christians like the ones I was describing actually adhere very closely to the scriptures. Read the Bible in its entirety and you’ll know that it isn’t about love, it’s about conquering the enemy. It is an inherently divisive religion (as are most religions).
on Feb 22nd, 2012 at 11:56 PM
@WJoaquin
I have read the bible which is why I know that there is no way the Christians you know adhere very closely to the scriptures. I can take one book from the bible and destroy a so-called Christian that wants to claim that they adhere very closely to the scriptures. The bible is about a lot of things, a good chunk of it is outlandish but there are stories about love, compassion, and forgiveness for example.
on Feb 27th, 2012 at 4:23 AM
@Ace
Look, if you want to re-claim Christianity to make it a peaceful, loving religion, then more power to you. But it is not, nor has it ever been, about love and compassion. That is extremely obvious just by flipping through the Bible. Sure, there are nice verses in it, but for you to sit there and be an apologist for some nutcase like Malcolm, who has the audacity to say that we should all bow down and give glory to his fictitious sky king, is shameful.
on Feb 27th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
@Wjoaquin
Nothing I said was shameful. What’s funny is you’re just like the so called hypocritical Christians that you despise. Someone makes one comment about how they feel about Jesus and you call them a nutcase. But yet you talk about how you don’t appreciate Malcolm’s comments because they are “demeaning.” How is calling Malcolm a nutcase not demeaning.
on Feb 27th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
WJoaquin,
Don’t bother with Ace. It shouldn’t be a surprise that KKKhristians aren’t willing to listen. If gay Christians have to choose between defending fellow Christians or gay people, they will always choose to defend Christians. They want to be accepted by their homophobic Christian society and they’re prepared to sacrifice their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to achieve it.
on Feb 27th, 2012 at 8:33 PM
@Fawkes
Why are you not commenting on the stories of people actually using the bible to try and deny you your rights. If you’re so offended by Malcolm comments and me saying that he said nothing wrong…….then you should be all over that story. You make it seem like by not hating all Christians you must be a Rick Santorum supporter. And I’m not a Christian but thanks for asking Mr. remember the 5th of November.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Ace,
Fawkes is my last name. I didn’t pick it because of the movie, smart ass. And how do you know that I don’t comment on other stories? I only ask because I do, and do so rather frequently. For not being a Christian, you sure do drop to your hands and knees to defend them. If you’re not a Christian, then you certainly do liked to be whipped by them.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
@Fawkes
I didn’t quote the poem to say that you picked the name on purpose. Since your name is Fawkes why not talk about the gun powder plot. Funny that you call me a smart ass considering that’s how you are. I’ll leave the dropping on hands and knees and being liking to be whipped to you. So when straight people stand in to say hey don’t call that gay kid a name just because you don’t agree with it, are they also being whipped by the lgbt community? I can also defend gay Muslim’s right to be a Muslim without having to be one, but I guess in your world that just can’t be right.
I read all the stories and your name wasn’t there about the story of the politician actively trying to deny you your rights. You spend so much time talking sh%t to someone who’s not trying to deny you your rights, but stay quiet about the person who is.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
What I find funny is how often the LGBT community loves to mention Martin Luther King Jr. and how he fought for equality for everyone the lgbt community included. But yet some of you who love some Martin Luther King Jr. and the way he fought for civil rights, sure don’t act like it. Last time I checked he was a Christian, so are you all gonna jump on him too. And being rude to someone just for talking about Jesus is not what MLK Jr. would have wanted.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Ace,
Martin Luther King didn’t post dumb shit on websites saying how Jesus deserves all the glory. He stood up for everyone’s rights, regardless of their religion. He was a Christian, but he wasn’t an asshole.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
@Ace: You “read all the stories”? I don’t usually post on this website, if that’s what you’re talking about. And I wasn’t talking about stories on this web site, either. Outsports is pretty much apolitical in the stories they cover.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
@WJoaquin
Of course he didn’t post stuff online because he was assassinated decades ago. Your comment just shows how little you know about MLK Jr. in the first place. If you really knew what he stood for then you would know that he was a deeply religious man who is known for talking about Jesus and the grace of God. And if you think he wouldn’t say the same thing Malcolm did then you know nothing about MLK Jr. If you think that Malcolm is an asshole for what he said then you think MLK Jr. is also one for saying this:
“We will win our freedom because the sacred heritage of our nation and the eternal will of God are embodied in our echoing demands.” And this:
“We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. I won’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And he’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy tonight. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
@Fawkes
Since MLK Jr. would have stood up to defend his fellow Christian if he was being attacked just for saying “From what I have heard of him, he is very humble in directing all the glory and honor to Jesus Christ, Who alone deserves it” Would that mean then that MLK Jr. “liked to be whipped by them.” Them being his fellow Christians. Is that what it means Fawkes? Oh but since MLK Jr. was part of the “KKKhristians” as you put it then I guess he also hated himself and didn’t die for equal rights since he wasn’t fighting for such a thing because he was part of the “KKKhristians” right? Which I guess also means that he was part of that church bombing since that’s what the “KKKhristians” were known for isn’t that right Fawkes.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 5:22 PM
There’s so much wrong with what you’re saying that I don’t even know where to begin. First, I think I’ll defend WJoaquin on his behalf. I think he was just mocking Malcolm’s post: “Martin Luther King didn’t post dumb shit on websites saying how Jesus deserves all the glory.” I may be wrong, but I don’t think he actually thinks King was around in the time of the Internet. Putz.
King was a Christian. Everyone knows that. But I see you felt the need to do your research on that. But what modern day evangelicals stand up for the poor like he did? He was a Christian, but he actually walked the walk, unlike most modern-day pastors. There were real things that were important to them, like combatting poverty. They didn’t just sit there whining about how Jesus needs to be praised 24/7.
Also, the Klan is a deeply Christian organization. They are now and they always have been. I’m sure you’ll whimper about how they’re not interpreting the Bible right, blah blah blah. They were motivated by their Christianity and believe that because ‘God separated the races’ that they should remain that way.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 6:03 PM
@Fawkes
It’s called sarcasm in response to WJoaquin internet statement.
I didn’t need to do research. I was just pointing out the obvious fact that you and WJoaquin seem to ignore that the reaction to Malcolm’s statement was unwarranted. If MLK Jr came back today but with a diff. look and said the same thing Malcolm did yall would say that he was saying “stupid shit” and he was an “asshole” even though he is for equal rights for everyone and fought the good fight.
I know what the KKK stands for, but since you wanted to lump all Christians together under the Klan banner “KKKhristians” YOU called MLK Jr. a “KKKhristian.” Now you wanna backtrack. If you think all Christians are “KKKhristians” then stand by your statement even though you are calling MLK Jr. among so many other people who believe in equality for everyone who happen to be Christian a Klansman.
on Feb 28th, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Ace,
I never called MLK a KKKhristian. I think you’re just looking for a fight because you woke up on the wrong side of the bathhouse.
on Feb 29th, 2012 at 2:10 AM
@Fawkes
Then what’s this “Don’t bother with Ace. It shouldn’t be a surprise that KKKhristians aren’t willing to listen.” That’s you calling ALL Christians “KKKhristians.” And since MLK Jr was a Christian he’s included. It would be similar to me jumping into a conversation with two people while I assume that one of them is a Muslim because they are defending Islam and trying to get the person disagreeing with the “Muslim” to ignore that person by saying “Don’t bother with Z. It shouldn’t be a surprise that terrorists aren’t willing to listen.” Then saying hey I wasn’t calling Irshad Manji a terrorist by lumping all Muslims together under the “terrorist” banner. When in reality that’s exactly what I would be doing. So next time don’t lump all Christians together, if it’s not your intention.
Why would one wakeup in a bathhouse. That may be your thing, but it’s not mine Mr. Treason and Plot. It’s clear we’re never going to see eye to eye on anything……..not even what color is SBW’s jersey this season. In the spirit of SBW As-Salamu Alaykum!
on Feb 29th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
No, it isn’t me calling all Christians Klansmen. You don’t know how to read.
on Feb 29th, 2012 at 10:18 PM
Obviously I can read. And yep that is you calling all christians klansman unless saying “KKKhristians aren’t willing to listen” means something different all of a sudden. If you had wanted to call certain people “KKKhristians” then you should have called them out by name or not used the plural form of your slur or said (some KKKhristians)……..but since you did not that means every Christian according to you is a klansmen. I would also like to point out that at first you didn’t deny the fact that your statement meant that MLK JR was part of the “KKKhristians” see post #30. You could work for Chael Sonnen as a writer or Miesha Tate.

Since you responded to my comment first and kept responding, doesn’t that make you an unemployed troll according to your definition LOL.
I just hope that Malcolm wasn’t an at risk youth with the way some of yall talked about him.
p.s. I got the hint, but you kept trying to be insulting so I figured why not keep agitating you in response until you gave up like you just did. Tebowing
But on a serious note spread the word if you feel like an outcast because of your sexuality, race, religion, economic status, education, etc, etc, etc, there is someone out there willing to listen and not judge you.
