A what-were-they-thinking? story from Ohio:
A Butler County teacher has resigned after she admitted to taking a group of four female students [who are also cheerleaders] to a gay bar in Dayton. Lori Epperson worked for Butler Tech and taught Marketing at Edgewood High School.

Teacher fired after field trip to gay strip bar
Kiffin does not-so-full Monte
Since Lane Kiffin arrived at Tennessee, he has made recruiting a focal point of his tenure. Part of that has been accusing other SEC schools of committing violations; Some of it has been him committing violations. Now come stories of Kiffin violating rules of other sorts, but making some gay men salivate with a strip [...]
Please fire Jeff Van Gundy again
Jeff Van Gundy, please shut up.
The former NBA coach and current ESPN and ABC analyst has ruined a perfectly good Sunday of hard-hitting basketball. All I wanted to do during this snowstorm in Atlanta (that’s right, snowstorm in Atlanta!) was relax, stay warm and watch a trifecta of pro basketball.

Mike Singletary, spelling genious
San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singltary, the guy who dropped his pants during a halftime locker room speech last season, is quickly becoming the most entertaining coach in the league. His latest gem will have English teachers everywhere cringing.
He was trying to answer a question from the audience about his commitment to smash-mouth football [...]

Joe Torre hopes players will come out
While Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre is getting ripped to shreds by the New York media for some things he said in his new book, he gave gay people something to cheer about in an interview he did on Larry King Live last week:
Ventura, Calif., Viewer: Billy Bean, after he retired, he announced he [...]
Coaches wife sues, wants more scoring
Deadspin hit the nail on the head with this one: A headline writers’ dream. Mississippi head men’s basketball coach Andy Kennedy was arrested last month in Cincinnati for allegedly punching a cab driver and yelling racial slurs at him. Kennedy immediately sued the cab driver for defamation. Now his wife, Kimber, is also suing the [...]
Broncos fire coach Mike Shanahan
File this under the “wow!” catagory. The Denver Broncos fired Coach Mike Shanahan two days after his team blew a three-game division lead and failed to make the playoffs. Shanahan won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1997-98, but has won only one playoff game since.
I advocated Shanhan getting sacked in my Week 17 notes. His teams [...]
The Grinch wears black and gold
Every Christmas for the last few years, a reporter in Pittsburgh has dressed up like Santa Claus and caused a stir at a Pittsburgh Steelers press conference. Coach Bill Cowher played along with it for years. Last year, Mike Tomlin did, too. But this year, Grinch Tomlin wasn’t having it, reportedly sighing throughout the ordeal [...]
Ashton Kutcher a football coach??
I know this story was first written in early November, but I just caught wind of it listening to Howard Stern today. And no, it’s not a Punk’d joke. It seems Ashton Kutcher, he of Jackass and Demi Moore fame, is an assistant coach at a high school in North Hollywood. At one point, he [...]
USC, UCLA show NCAA what class is
It is great to hear about the cooperation being exhibited this week between USC football coach Pete Carroll and UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel, and how they gave the big middle finger to the NCAA. For years, both USC and UCLA wore their dark home jerseys in their annual end-of-season rivalry game. But the big, mean NCAA [...]
Homophobic coaches suspended again
Over the last two weeks, we’ve followed the story of two youth baseball coaches who allegedly use name-calling and homophobic slurs to motivate their young baseball players. The two coaches were suspended for a year and then un-suspended. And now, they are suspended for a year again.
In another surprising turn of events, the Park Board [...]
Homophobic coaches to be re-suspended?
Two coaches who allegedly used homophobic slurs to taunt pre-teens they coached in baseball, and who allegedly encouraged other kids to do the same, may soon see their overturned suspension reinstated. We originally reported about these two coaches and their overturned suspension last week. Now the city council is not pleased (probably after outcry from [...]
Leaf falling again in Texas
Apparently, Ryan Leaf has been a quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M. And apparently, he has left sooner than anticipated. He was reportedly suspended from his duties for asking a player for painkillers, and today he resigned as coach. As Yahoo! Sports wrote, he had allegedly been asking players for “something a little stronger than [...]
Fulmer lesson: Coaches beware
The firing of Phil Fulmer as the University of Tennessee head football coach reflects the ugly underbelly of sports. Fulmer has the third highest win percentage (.746) of active coaches in Div. 1 college football. He just signed a seven-year contract extension. But the university is letting him go. The university will point to his [...]
