Broncos fire coach Mike Shanahan

File this under the “wow!” catagory. The Denver Broncos fired Coach Mike Shanahan two days after his team blew a three-game division lead and failed to make the playoffs. Shanahan won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1997-98, but has won only one playoff game since.
I advocated Shanhan getting sacked in my Week 17 notes. His teams [...]

The Grinch wears black and gold

Every Christmas for the last few years, a reporter in Pittsburgh has dressed up like Santa Claus and caused a stir at a Pittsburgh Steelers press conference. Coach Bill Cowher played along with it for years. Last year, Mike Tomlin did, too. But this year, Grinch Tomlin wasn’t having it, reportedly sighing throughout the ordeal [...]

Ashton Kutcher a football coach??

I know this story was first written in early November, but I just caught wind of it listening to Howard Stern today. And no, it’s not a Punk’d joke. It seems Ashton Kutcher, he of Jackass and Demi Moore fame, is an assistant coach at a high school in North Hollywood. At one point, he [...]

USC, UCLA show NCAA what class is

It is great to hear about the cooperation being exhibited this week between USC football coach Pete Carroll and UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel, and how they gave the big middle finger to the NCAA. For years, both USC and UCLA wore their dark home jerseys in their annual end-of-season rivalry game. But the big, mean NCAA [...]

Homophobic coaches suspended again

Over the last two weeks, we’ve followed the story of two youth baseball coaches who allegedly use name-calling and homophobic slurs to motivate their young baseball players. The two coaches were suspended for a year and then un-suspended. And now, they are suspended for a year again.
In another surprising turn of events, the Park Board [...]

Homophobic coaches to be re-suspended?

Two coaches who allegedly used homophobic slurs to taunt pre-teens they coached in baseball, and who allegedly encouraged other kids to do the same, may soon see their overturned suspension reinstated. We originally reported about these two coaches and their overturned suspension last week. Now the city council is not pleased (probably after outcry from [...]

Leaf falling again in Texas

Apparently, Ryan Leaf has been a quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M. And apparently, he has left sooner than anticipated. He was reportedly suspended from his duties for asking a player for painkillers, and today he resigned as coach. As Yahoo! Sports wrote, he had allegedly been asking players for “something a little stronger than [...]

Fulmer lesson: Coaches beware

The firing of Phil Fulmer as the University of Tennessee head football coach reflects the ugly underbelly of sports. Fulmer has the third highest win percentage (.746) of active coaches in Div. 1 college football. He just signed a seven-year contract extension. But the university is letting him go. The university will point to his [...]

Homophobic coaches un-suspended

Two youth baseball coaches in Indiana, Scott Kaletha and Mike Schwanke, who allegedly engaged in the homophobic taunting of one of his 12-year-old players were suspended for a year after an investigation earlier this summer. But that suspension has been overturned by local Park and Recreation Board on a 3-2 vote after nine hours of hearings [...]

Old man in Oakland finally gets cable

Lane Kiffin’s personal hell is now over. Al Davis fired him this morning and has replaced him with offensive line coach Tom Cable. One of the items that’s getting buried in this story though is Al Davis’ stubborn refusal to pay Kiffin the rest of his contract. It was widely assumed he’s waited this long [...]

NCLR gets Title IX findings

The National Center for Lesbian Rights got some strong news regarding the lawsuit they have brought against a San Diego college alleging Title IX violations and homophobia in releasing out lesbian coaches. The Office of Civil Rights has found “substantial and unjustified” violations. The press release after the jump.

Closeted coach on trial

A former youth league baseball coach is on trial in Monterey, Calif., for allegedly molesting at least one underage boy. David Stamm, the defendant, says he’s not guilty and only engaged the boy in a sexual relationship once the boy 1) consented and 2) was 18. Stamm also says he’s gay and had been afraid [...]

Too Much Info

Carlos Guillen, first basemen for the Detroit Tigers had a rough game the other night, but it wasn’t for the regular reasons.  No, it wasn’t an off night.  No it wasn’t troubles at home.

“He can hardly move — he’s got hemorrhoids so bad,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday. “He’s been playing with hemorrhoids that [...]

As I said last week, Spygate is over . . .

As Goodell told reporters after meeting with Matt Walsh: “I don’t know where else I would turn.”
Of course, the memory of this whole episode will live with Patriots fans and Patriots haters for years to come. But it’s clear we’ve seen the last of this. Sorry Rams fans: You lost the Super Bowl fair and [...]
