The Toronto Marlies, a farm team of the Maple Leafs, held a sold-out LGBT event on Saturday featuring Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke. The event was co-hosted by the Toronto Gay Hockey Association and featured a hockey shinny (the equivalent of a pick-up game) with Burke! He later Tweeted about it as only a GM [...]

Esera Tuaolo hosting Holiday Show benefit for St. Jude’s Hospital
One of the most beautiful Christmas carols I listen to every year is Esera Tuaolo’s version of Silent Night featuring only his beautiful voice and a ukulele. I’m hoping that will be part of the performance for Tuaolo’s Fifth Annual Holiday Show in Minneapolis benefiting St. Jude’s Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 10. The show, featuring [...]
National Association for Sport and Physical Education joins GLSEN’S Changing The Game
We can’t say enough about the work being done by GLSEN’S Changing the Game project. While so many other organizations preach to the choir or hope the voices of celebrities do the talking for us, Pat Griffin and her crew are taking the message of inclusion where it counts. The latest is the announcement that [...]

Team DC gives out awards, scholarships
Team DC, the umbrella gay sports organization in Washington DC, handed out awards on Oct. 22 at their Champions Awards reception. The most impressive component of the awards are the scholarships given to student-athletes. Three athletes received college scholarships: Northern Virginia Community College’s Joe Acevedo; Washington University’s Nate Eckland; and University of Maryland’s Justin Kanga. Awards [...]
GForce and Patrick Burke host successful forum with Boston college athletes
There was by all accounts a fantastic forum last Monday, Oct. 17, at the campus of the Christian Science Church in Boston. Discussion panels can be boooooring and not particularly productive. This one was lively in large part because of the collegial, open tone that developed into honest discussions about gay athletes showering with straight [...]
Battle erupting this weekend over Gay Games and Outgames one quadrennial event
As the Federation of Gay Games meets this weekend in Toronto, the hot topic will be the potential merger* of quadrennial events between the Gay Games and Outgames in 2018. While a combination of events is being discussed, no merger of organizations is on the table. Eight years after the Outgames separated from the Gay [...]

Nike hosts gay coming out day event highlighting straight allies
Read more from Pat Griffin on her blog. Last spring just after GLSEN launched Changing the Game, our new sports project, I got an email from Edward Tylicki from Nike. Edward is a member of Nike’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Friends Employee Network. Edward sought me out as director for the Sports Project because [...]
Gay Bowl XI notes: Rain-out, referees, second teams, Hall of Fame, poetry
Gay Bowl XI was held in Houston Oct. 7-9, the second time it took place in Texas. These are just a few thoughts from a super dry…then super wet weekend. Championships. The final day of the tournament was rained and thundered out. Seventeen games were scheduled to take place on Sunday, so a bunch of [...]
Gay Bowl XI kicks off in Houston
Gay flag football players from across North America descend on Houston this weekend to take part in Gay Bowl XI, the sport’s national championship. This is the second time Texas has hosted the tournament; Dallas was the site of the 2006 Gay Bowl. The two-time defending champion Los Angeles Motion (the team Jim and I [...]
New York Mets hosting gay night Sept. 26
When I hosted the first LGBT Community Night with the New York Mets in 2004, it took a lot of convincing for them to open the doors for the event. One of their big concerns was how to handle a transgender person using the restroom. Now the team itself is reviving the LGBT Community night [...]
