Concrete Hero raises money for AIDS Project Los Angeles

AIDS Project Los Angeles has a cool annual fundraiser called Concrete Hero. The event is a 5k obstacle course through Downtown Los Angeles on July 15. There are a couple ways you can help!

First, I’m racing in this crazy event on Team Kick A$$ (it’s about fundraising, after all), and I would appreciate any donation you can make. $5? $10? Amazing, thank you! The donations go to prevention and education of HIV and AIDS, along with helping people living with the virus. While so many people have become desensitized to the issue, it is still an emotional, physical and financial burden to those people living with HIV and AIDS. And again, thank you for any donation you can make!

You can also be part of the event! In addition to raising money for a good cause, the event promises to be a lot of fun. You’ll climb over a makeshift Hollywood sign, scramble through a “traffic jam,” and even cross the La Brea tar pits (hopefully cleanly). How often do you get to race down the streets of Los Angeles with wild obstacles in the middle of the street? I think it’ll be a ton of fun.

Swim for Equality ends season this weekend

Two former Bengals Anthony Munoz and Jim Breech sponsor event for anti-gay group

Two former Cincinnati Bengals, including Hall of Famer Anthony Muñoz, are co-sponsoring a fundraiser for the Ohio-based anti-gay hate group Citizens for Community Values. Former kicker Jim Breech joins Muñoz as a co-sponsor. The group’s annual golf classic, to be held on Sept. 6, costs $110 per person to participate and will raise tens of thousands of dollars to help the organization fight equality for gay Ohioans. From their Web site:

Last year was another record year for CCV’s Golf Classic. CCV netted over $17,000! Since then, those gifts have gone toward the work that CCV has done faithfully since 1983 – that is, upholding and defending Judeo-Christian family values throughout Ohio and across the nation.

We know that homosexual behavior is destructive to the individual and sincerely reach out to assist those individuals caught up in this behavior.

Well at least they do it sincerely.

Swim For Equality set for San Francisco and Malibu; Kickoff party in L.A. May 28

Equality California is hosting its second Swim For Equality this year in two locations: June 26 in San Francisco and Sept. 24 in Malibu. Supporters of the swim include Olympic gold medalists Gary Hall, Lenny Krayzelburg and Greg Louganis. Anyone interested in participating in one of the swims should head over to the EQCA site. Mike Holtz, whom we’ve written about several times on Outsports, is again organizing the event as part of his newly launched company, mkh2o. Outsports is proud to again sponsor the swim, along with State Farm Insurance, LASC and Compete magazine.

They’re also kicking off the big events with a Get Wet pool party in Los Angeles, May 28.

Mike Holtz wins athlete of the year award

Mike Holtz, a friend of Outsports and a co-organizer of the Equality Night with the Los Angeles Clippers, has been named the Athlete of the Year for 2010 by Compete Magazine. I’m proud to have been asked by Mike to be one of his references for the award. Mike has dedicated his last few years to utilizing sports events to bring money and attention to the fight for gay equality; He is presently on staff with Equality California. Congratulations Mike on some well-deserved recognition!

Rugby players in red dresses

Gotta love sports groups getting creative to raise money. In Nashville, Tenn., the Grizzlies Rugby Football Club held its Red Dress Rampage and raised over $4,000 for the group. The event features teammates and supporters wearing red dresses as they run from bar to bar, supported by many local businesses.

Dog Tag Project looks good on athletes

The Dog Tag Project was started by Matt Freeman, a former executive at Here! media. The project’s aim is to put names and faces on the fight against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. They have teamed up with various former military personnel who have been discharged by the military under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and they sell replicas of the dog tags of those people (including Dan Choi).

We brought some dog tags to Cologne for the Gay Games to spread the word about the project, and the athletes there were excited to wear the tags. You can see several photos here; And you can buy your own dog tag replicas from the Project; proceeds benefit groups fighting Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Swim For Equality this Saturday

Equality California’s Swim For Equality is this Saturday in Malibu. Even if you’re not participating, you can head to Malibu to watch the swim and attend the post-party at a gorgeous home in Topanga.

The party is $50, but you get in free if you donate said $50 to the swim. A couple teams you might consider donating to: Greg Louganis’ team has not yet reached their lofty goal of $10k (and every dollar counts); And friends of Outsports (and frequent cover guys) Mike Crosby and David Hermann are also raising money for their swim and haven’t yet hit their goal.

Big Gay 10k coming to San Francisco

San Francisco’s annual Bay to Breakers 12k race is a 100-year-old tradition, complete with runners in wacky costumes. With the announcement today, just a week after the race, that sponsor ING is pulling out of the event, the recently formed Big Gay 10k in San Francisco could be the beneficiary. While nothing can replace the insanity of Bay to Breakers, the Big Gay 10k is certainly putting forward a tone of the race that could help ease the pain. From the organizers:

Greater Than One, the endurance program of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, is excited to announce a new and very “only in San Francisco” event. The Big Gay 10K will take place on Saturday, August 14, 2010. Runners will compete in the 6.2 mile run along San Francisco Bay at Crissy Field. Runners also have the option to fundraise to help the San Francisco AIDS Foundation put an end to HIV.
